OK, so if I choose a legion that is unaligned, such as Night Lords or Word Bearers, can I mix and match units with different allegiances to the Dark Gods without penalty?
How well do they get along with each other? I do not see any restrictions like there used to be (just returning from 6th ed).
So, a Slaanesh sorceror can hop in a Nurgle Rhino with a Tzeentch Dark Apostle and a bunch of Khorne Berserkers?

My other question is more of a philosophical one. I am trying to organize the remainder of my models before I paint for Night Lords and Word Bearers. As I put the list together, I am having a hard time aligning to Chaos Gods. Is there any way these chapters lean from a fluff stand point? Word Bearers make me think Khorne, but that is just because they are red. I was toying with the idea of 4 squads of possessed, each dedicated to a different power. Doubtful it would be effective, but the lulz factor is there.

No restrictions-if they have the same <LEGION> they can ride in the rhino.

Note that the Rule Of Three applies for a unit like possessed, so you can only have three of them. In friendly games, I wouldn’t care about waiving that for a fluffy list, but it’s something to ask your opponent.

One other thing, in this case, the chaos alignment would only effect what Icon they could take? There are no benefits, per se, from the Chaos Alignment, the perks come from Legion Traits? (What I am getting at, its not like before where Nurgle gave you +1T, Slaanesh +1I, etc.)

The mark of chaos is important for stratagems. For example, endless cacophony can only be played on units with mark of slaanesh. Fury of khorne can only be played on units with the mark of khorne.

The Mark keywords themselves have no inherent rules, they act as an anchor for other rules, like stratagems, to interact with.

Death Guard, Thousand Sons, World Eaters and Emperor's Children are obviously alligned to specific gods. Black Legion and Word Bearers pretty much explicitly favour all of the gods equally. The other main legions are opportunistic enough to just allign themselves with whatever dark powers will benefit them.

In general, the Night Lords kind of hate the chaos gods rather than worship them. Individual warbands might have fallen in line with a particular god, but its basically defining trait of the Night Lords that they feel like the entire universe hates them and is out to get them, chaos gods included.

Of course, chaos gets its teeth into you whether you like it or not when you spend time in the Eye of Terror.

And the end of th day though, its your dudes. I wouldn't worry too much about the canon and just do what you think is cool.
