I have a mind to do a video about kitbashing a veteran imperial guard squad with the Forward Sentries doctrine. Forward Sentries is an optional upgrade available for veteran imperial guard to take camo cloaks which is available from 5th edition to 7th ed. I haven't yet gotten into 8th or 9th edition so I am wondering if this option, or something similar, is still available or not? Can anyone here help me out?

Completely gone, as are the other doctrines for Vets. Vets are just slightly more accurate Guardsmen with more special weapons now.

Maybe hold out until the 9th Ed codex releases and see if they bring any of those options back.

Ok thanks, I just wanted to know for the sake of making accurate commentary. Just to be clear is it completely gone as in you can't even approximate it with these new fangled strategems? Like I know orks lost their "ard boy" upgrade but i think there is a strategem that allows an equivalent ability.

The only way to approximate camo cloaks for AM in 8th/9th so far is to use the Wilderness Survivors regiment trait found in The Greater Good PA book and tbh it's not brilliant. Deffo wait til the 9th ed codex.

As all interesting things for Guard, taken out back and shot.

Taken out back and given to space marines, more like.

Not fully given, if they did that I'd have personally come to Nottingham and give it the old Irish surprise.

Camo cloaks? Check. Mines on stealthy troops? Check. Units that can reduce your charge roll? Also check.

I mean yeah, they didn't give it all to a single unit. But it's quite remarkable when you look back at the last few editions how much stuff has been removed from other factions while at the same time being given to space marines.

Yeah, Imperial Guard Veterans have had a bit of a rough ride since 8th launched. I suppose I should be happy that they still have the option to take shotguns. My army usually includes 1 or 2 Veteran squads with shotguns and meltaguns in a Chimera. A bit outdated in the post 7th edition world, but I still like to field them.

While it would be nice for Veterans to regain some of their options (or even get new ones) I fear GW will be hesitant to give them anything which needs to be converted from other bits.

A Cadian and Catachan Veteran box would be great to see with the new codex. I don't see that happening though. More tanks instead perhaps.

I'll omens, more Krieg stuff got punted into OOP along with shootings. My fear is you wont see Vets or anything related by next Codex

Forgeworld gave a statement that much of what was put into "out of stock - no longer available" in these past months will be coming back. How much though is a different question.

But, yeah, I could see Guard losing Veterans altogether. Maybe even Special Weapons Squads too.

Might just be me, but I've had a bad feeling about Guard this edition. More of a "we won't get anything new/different" kind of a feeling.

Wont be getting anything new, just more taken away. $5 I bet there will not be an actual unit release when the codex drops like last time.

They haven't hit on a good excuse to double the prices of all the guard stuff yet. Until they do, it's better to just release SoB and Mechanicus stuff, because the prices there are already doubled so it doesn't look so out of place.

Mhmm, that is exactly what I thought they'd do.

Spoiler:

You can see the gist of my guard regiment. If you look at the current dex you can also see that they may as well not exist in the current rules. Oh, yeah, the respirator upgrade kits are oop now too

In addition to my guard's theme essentially being erased from a playstyle and themeatic point of view, the rules of the game itself have taken a crap as well.

Oh well.

I've kept my army, but have transitioned to epic armageddon. The rules are boss.

I have very low hopes for a good dex, let alone a better game when it does come out.

If the starting crop of 9th Ed codexes are an accurate indicate of what is to come, expect a lot of interesting options when the 9th Edition Codex: Astra Militarum drops. Don't expect this veteran or camouflage in particular, but options seems to be a thing GW is baking into the codexes.

Considering how the recent trend for IG has been to lose options (or at least break even between losses and gains), you'll have to forgive me if I remain less sanguine until I have the codex in my hands.

The trend for 9th has been to give more options, so...

The only units I recall Guard losing were either characters with no official model (which was a 6th/7th ed codex change) or FW units that are OOP or have similar rules somewhere else (i.e. Death Korps). I'd love to see the old veteran upgrades return this edition maybe with some new options as well.

I hadn't thought about that, but a Veteran upgrade would very much fit into the 9th Edition rules method not unlike the Kabalite Trueborn. GW could go that way, although my biggest fear then would be Veterans losing their extra weapon options compared to Infantry Squad.
