Subject: Hell just froze over... Harmony Gold and Big West partner up for Macross/Robotech
Wow...I really hoped they (HG) would be out of the anime business but the back to back agreements with Tatsunoko in 2019 and now Big West pretty much ensures that won't be the case.

Well, that hurt my brain.
This quote in particular:
Big West Representative Director, Kaya Onishi added, “Stories that feature Valkyries, a transformable realistic mecha, in action among the galaxies while diva's sing in the background, as well as love triangles involving the pilots and singers. That was and continues to be the concept behind the Macross series, and I am happy that I can now help bring Macross to people all over the world on the 40th anniversary of the series. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Harmony Gold Chairman, Frank Agrama for his courageous decision in this matter.”
That's the series concept? Mecha, divas and love triangles? I mean, yeah, those things are in the show, but it feels like the translation went to hell and came back severely streamlined.
I'm vaguely curious what this means for Southern Cross and the Invid arc, but keeping Harmony Gold in the driver's seat feels bad, even if it means that some of the later Macross stuff can finally wander over.
And, ugh. A live action _Robotech_ film. Collapsing 36 episode of terrible translations and a gakked up understanding of the plot and stuffing it sideways into 90-120 minutes can't possibly go well.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of BattleTech fans suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

There is no translation problem here. If the name has Macross in it, then it will include those three items. By this point I just assume it has something to do with the fetishes of all involved.

*Transformable* mecha, divas, and love triangles. And yes, that is the series concept. Further, it's not as if this is unique. The original Bubblegum Crisis, which was released a few years later, also featured mecha and an idol (no love triangle, though). And the much more recent Gundam SEED also featured all three of those elements (and also included real world idols as voice actors every half-season for characters that would get killed off at some point).
I'm vaguely curious what this means for Southern Cross and the Invid arc
Probably not much. Those two series weren't all that popular in their original Japanese run (I think Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross actually ended prematurely because not enough people were watching it), which is why they got picked up to pad out Macross, and make a story long enough for syndication.
And, ugh. A live action _Robotech_ film. Collapsing 36 episode of terrible translations and a gakked up understanding of the plot and stuffing it sideways into 90-120 minutes can't possibly go well.
Do You Remember Love is pretty good, imo. In any case, a live action Robotech movie has been talked about for over a decade now.
By this point I just assume it has something to do with the fetishes of all involved.
Remember that Shouji Kawamori essentially cast *himself* as a movie director in Macross Frontier, and "discovers" one of the characters, who he casts as the female lead's real-life grandmother in the in-series movie based on Macross Zero's plot.
The big question, imo, is what this means for Macross Zero and Macross Seven. Macross Plus slipped in before HG started enforcing things, and also doesn't have any characters or designs from the original series. Macross Frontier and later series don't use the earlier characters. But Macross Seven and Macross Zero both have characters from SDF: Macross playing very prominent roles within their respective series. The bit at the Funimation blog suggests that HG retains the rights to the characters, which would seem to indicate that HG would have to agree before either of those series could air in the US.
Though having said that, I did hear a rumor quite a while back that ADV actually *did* get both parties to agree to allow the licensing of Macross Zero. But according to the rumor, Big West promptly revoked their permission when they found out that a separate agreement had been reached with HG to allow the distribution in the US. Such a revocation would have probably been due to potential legal precedents. But if the dispute has effectively been settled, then legal precedents might not be an issue anymore.

Has those elements, sure. But the concept needs to be a bit stronger than just 'has these three things.' It sounds like an intentionally bad summary to make the show sound like crap.
The concept should be 'space opera about overcoming/rejecting violence and embracing others through the power of music and love.' Not 'has mecha, singers and specifically love triangles.' You might as well describe star wars as space!fighters, laser swords and magical lineages. Or star trek as 'Spaceships, science and military hierarchies.'
Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Given that part of the bad guy scheme in Macross Frontier was "use the power of a music idol to enslave the alien bugs, and use those bugs to conquer humanity", I'm going to disagree here...

Macross Frontier and later series don't use the earlier characters
They do reference them, and in Delta it's rather...strongly implied that one (off screen) character is someone Very High Profile in the original Macross series.
That being said, I did not have Macross being freed from legal hell on my 2021 bingo.

Macross/Robotech.
There is no comparable universe where I love the design aesthetic and technology so much and detest the original media with equal measure. My son and I attempted watching Macross but gave up and switched to Gundam. Not surprising that neither myself nor a 9yo boy were interested in an extended musical space soap opera seemingly deliberately written with all the awkwardness of 14yo male insecurity.
Still good news though. Looking forward to more merchandise and maybe a live movie will be better?

I suspect trying to finally get the live action movie out of development hell finally spurred HG to actually clear up the questionable worldwide rights despite their decades long legal bluster to the contrary.

I'm looking forward to the (old) new content of Macross. So much more anime then we saw in the US...
Not too happy about Harmony Gold still involved. They are a toxic company, and I can't help but think this will not go well.
It would be fantastic if this led to a reboot of the franchise. Can you imagine what Robotech would look like with modern animation and sound?
Lots of trepidation about this announcement. Hopefully will lead to some previously unreleased material being shown in the US, and maybe new stuff in the future.

I won't post my opinion of Gundam; it would only upset you. Let's just say I was less impressed with it than you were with Macross.
But to each their own. We all like what we like, and don't like what we don't like. No need to diss something that other people like just because you don't.

This is a forum about hobbies, there's no "needs" here. Sharing ones opinion -even negative ones as I did without personal attacks- is entirely appropriate and no one should be upset about it.
More to the point, feel free to share your opinions about Gundam. It won't hurt my feelings and I welcome the thoughts of those who know more about the genre. The only Gundam series I've watched more than a few episodes of is wing and I wouldn't describe it as great TV. I simply find it better then Macross because it has less of what I described earlier. Its been no more or less than a fun way for my son and I to get a dose of TV Mecha.

I mean... there are Gundam series I loathe, and there are Gundam series I love. And that's even in the main UC universe. If you take into account all the alternate universes, the Builders and stuff... well.
That said, my favorite stuff are still the "smaller" series, with War in the Pocket probably still at the very top.
I might have some gripes with Macross, though, but I still like it much more than Robotech, and even the worse stuff... at least they try, you know. The Robotech stuff they "made" after the original series are so bad and so much of a naked cash grab that it's not even funny.
Also, all the series have been adding stuff to the Macross universe, which right now it's quite an interesting place.

Wing is... one of the worst, actually, quite below the worst Macross offenders. When Gundam is good, you get great series like The 8th MS Team, War in the Pocket or Iron Blooded Orphans. When Gundam is weird, you get Gundam G or Turn A. When Gundam is bad, you get Wing, or Age, or Reconguista in G.

Headline is a bit misleading, my understanding is we have detant and tolerance, not a team up.
Big West will make Macross and market it in the English speaking world, the parasitic ticks at Harmony Gold will continue to hawk 40 year old bad translations and pretend that their live action movie will happen one day.
While the continued existence of Harmony Gold irks me, I can live with the pain.

Well, Texas did first, and it's only a small step down from there.
Not a fan of Texas? I've never been there let alone lived there but it seems like if there was a state most similar to most of Australia geographically and culturally (excluding the big coastal cities) then it would be Texas.

From Robotech.com
Moving forward, both parties will cooperate on distribution regarding future Macross and Robotech projects for the benefit of both franchises.
My guess is that HG will likely be co-marketing in the US on their behalf and likely have some sort of reciprocal deal for any potential Robotech Sony film in regions where BW has legally won back their rights. That's just supposition though based on the above. I don't see a company as vindictive and incompetent as HG agreeing to anything without being able to stick their lazy fingers into more of the Macross pies.
