My kids are really getting into Mandalorian and Clone Wars, and I think this might be an angle to get them into table top wargames.... And SWL Clone Wars models seem cooler (and maybe easier to paint?) than Rebellion v Empire.

So I'm taking the plunge and would like to pick up a Core box and 2 expansions, one for each faction.

For those with Sep / Rep experience, what expansion would you pick (not another core box, not just yet) that is the most fun.

I'm playing with my 9 year old son, so nothing competitive and nothing "broken" (i.e., not a unit that can't be defeated unless I buy other units first...) but what small expansion box would you pick up first, just for fun? I'd like to get one Separatist box, and one Republic box.

(And I'll eventually get one each of the tanks, but not just yet!)

Bonus question: why do folks say another dice pack is important? If we share the dice, are there really many situations that arise for which you require another set?

Thanks in advance!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

I would say go first for whatever their favourite unit is or theme along their favourite film (or episode of clone wars). You cant really go wrong with getting an extra core unit for each faction (B2 Super droids and Phase 2 clones), a specialist unit (ARCs and Commandos) or character (Dooku and Anakin) etc. but if you are wanting to later play "legal" 800pts games three core units are needed.
Unless your boy really likes CIS stuff I would highly recommend starting him with GAR, the models are lot easier to assemble and the army play style is far more forgiving.

On the dice thing, there just are not enough dice for an average situation included in the core set. Take a unit of B1s firing, you will need six white attack dice if the unit does not include an extra B1 (or heavy) the core gives you three. Whilst it is not the end of the world it is just a pain to have to rereoll dice to form attack and defence pools. Though as always it is recommended to get a 2nd core set to fill out the numbers of dice, bodies in each army (though extra BARCs/droideka and characters are not really needed) and movement/range templates.

Start with adding more corps type unit for both forces. They are situational neutral and a set number or corps units is mandatory dependent on what kind of point limit you run.
Minimum two corps units for 500p skirmish, minimum 3 for 800p standard. (so with the p2 box you can only play skirmish games as it only has 2 corps units for both forces)

For CiS, you can add one box of B2s for varitys sake for your kid, but dont think in the game the B2s behave like they do on the screen, the B2s are not durable death machines, you have to move them from cover to cover and shoot from cover.
B1s are your bread and butter and the general playstyle of the CIS is horde, there is no corps units that is as cheap and can contain as many bodys in Legion as the B1 droids, but at the same time, the B1s overall preformance is very bad. They are cannonfodder, but even cannofodder is a serios threath in large numbers.

From there i would add a unit of commando droids. They are good in mele, good at holding objectives and has just alot of general use. Futher steps to 800p is very open for when you play casualy, but know this, the tanks and ATs are a huge point sink and should not be used in skirmish games.
CiS only have 3 commanders, Greivous that is 2p box exlusive, Dooku and a " hidden" low point cost one, the T-series tactial droid, you can find it in the Separatist Specialists Personnel Expansion.
