Hi everyone!

Weird question here. I know the obvious HIWPI answer, so not looking for that. Looking for the RAW.

The 55th Kappic Eagles Stratagem is:
"Use this Stratagem in your Shooting phase, when a unit is destroyed by an attack made by a model in a 55TH KAPPIC EAGLES unit from your army. In your opponent’s next Shooting phase, when resolving an attack made by an enemy model against a unit other than that 55th Kappic Eagles unit, subtract 1 from the hit roll if that 55TH KAPPIC EAGLES unit is the closest visible unit from your army to that model and it is not within 1" of any enemy models."

If a unit is firing out of the back of a Stormlord or other open-topped AM transport, can this Stratagem be used?

Argument against (HIWPI): you can't use Stratagems on units in transports dummy

Argument in favor: the Stratagem is not targeting the unit. It isn't targeting anything. It simply is played after a unit shoots and destroys an enemy model. that unit may or may not happen to be in a transport, but since the Stratagem doesn't target that unit it is irrelevant.

Edit:
Yes I know the Stratagem won't do anything unless the transport is destroyed but work with me here.

It works so long as (like you said) the transport is destroyed. It doesn’t require that the unit be in a particular place and doesn’t target it.

If the stratagem were worded like “Select a unit of 55th Kapic Eagles that have destroyed a unit this turn...” then maybe not. Right now, given it just looks to see that a unit did a thing and triggers, it would function.

Yeah, I think that works. Weird as all heck, but aw well.

How would you even resolve it if it were permitted? You can’t measure to an embarked unit and they can’t be visible.

You’d be wasting your CP.

If the transport gets wrecked, then it works.

I agree this is a dumb usage, but it technically works.
