We’ve seen quite a number of special edition releases, mostly primaris officers, and now a whole swift of tanith soldiers.

Do you enjoy these release levels or are you frustrated that GW could be using this time to create or re create models that have codex rules

I wish, I could get the terminator armoured Librarian, but after seeing his price I had to pass. Good looking model though.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Nice to have the options. For me, gaming has never been "just" on the table...

The special models are not the reason you don't get a new/redone unit for <whatever faction you collect>.

If GW wanted to release Aspect Warriors, Guardsmen, Tyranids, ... they would do it.

Look at all the specialist games and AoS. Look how much new stuff gets created and released every month.

GW does not want to create/update some 40k kits for reasons.

That's why yes, I think those special models that explore something that is not viable right now to produce a big line of it are a neat addition.

I also like shiny things, I'd love a special edition Succubus/Haemonculus/Archon (with extra large hat).

I think it comes down to how hard the model is to kitbash and whether it is needed. There are tonnes of options for kitbashing Space Marine Lieutenants, kitbashing tanith soldiers is harder. I think Craftworlds needs to be updated sooner than Astra Militarum, but Astra Militarum does need updates and new releases as well.

I'm not bothered about it one way or another.

If they make something I like? I'll try & pick it up.

Only thing that annoys me is when there is limited stock and yet still its "limited" to 3 or 6 per order, and unsurprisngly all the stock is gone by 10:01am.

If youre going to release something that limited, 1 per order, per delivery address and payment method.

I love one-off limited edition models. I collect them even for armies I don't play.

I love the Black Library tie-in models.

The limited or collectors edition stuff. . . it's fine. None of those are anything that--as a gamer--I can't do without.

Valerian and Aleya as well as Stern and her Harlequin friend are still available years after release.

Gaunt's Ghosts will be similarly available.

No I am not rather happy with it. In fact annoyed. It would be better to see this and then also update to a the rest of the Guard line.

I understand why they do it but personally don't like it, I'd rather be able to get a model I want when I want than have to run the gauntlet of ordering at exactly the release time, or paying over the odds via Ebay from all those people who snaffled up multiples for exactly that reason.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

They're much less iconic than Gaunt's Ghosts however. I'm imagining scalpers will soon make quick work of this set.

I don't think it's an either/or proposition.

I don't think them making collector's models prevents them from doing other things.

Which won't mean anything in the end since Valerian and Aleya, Raine, Eisenhorn, and Gotrek have all gone in+out of stock, but come back.

They might sell out early on, but the likelihood is they will be back.

The Catachan models that we had? They were a different kettle of fish entirely. Sergeant Ripper was meant to be the store opening/rebranding model for 2020 and instead they chose to make her a hell of a lot more readily available than she would have been otherwise. That Catachan Colonel? He was meant to be the store anniversary model for 2020.

This is my only complaint and its the same for other limited lore stuff like lore and art books. I'd welcome GW doing regular reprints/recastings or even an "on demand" system that's actively marketed and such. I love these things but sometimes they arrive and you just don't have the money. Or perhaps you're not into an army or bit of fluff at that time and then it passes and the opportunity might well be gone for all time (or might only return at high price on ebay or with sheer luck in trading groups).

Heck I got Ripper Jackson and I don't play Guard, but I might start Cults one day, even if its just a small force, and I can certainly convert her up easily to be part of that.

Random point of irritation on the Tanith models:

We have a Colonel leading 2 Platoon, a Major leading 3 Platoon, a Sergeant leading 4 Platoon. What's the hell is going on here? Like, we have a Colonel leading the same unit as an NCO.
A Sergeant leads a squad, a Lieutenant leads a platoon, a Major or Captain leads a Company, a LtCol leads a Battalion, and a Colonel leads a Regiment [and so on and so forth through brigades and divisions and corps and armies]

Like, even if the sergeant is acting platoon leader because the commissioned officer leading 4 Platoon is dead, there a whole 6 levels of command between a Colonel and a Platoon Leader.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Dan Abnett’s new novel takes us back to the earliest days of Ibram Gaunt and the Tanith First, where you’ll learn about a dark secret that’s haunted them ever since.

This mega limited edition includes a beautifully bound copy of the book itself, plus a whole host of extras. You’ll find a pair of maps, a cap pin, coins, art, a metal memory box, and loads more. Also included is a datasheet with rules to use Gaunt’s Ghosts in your games of Warhammer 40,000.

That's why, apparently.

Its not exactly a new problem, either in general for 40k which largely lacks the concept of ranks and an understanding of what they're for, or specifically the Tanith (which should have gotten sorted out ages ago, or just dissolved into another force as reinforcing bodies). Abnett apparently really just want to keep a low number of characters and hang off of rank tropes. He wanted the Sgt to act like a sergeant (well, a sniper sergeant), even if he was filling a captain's boots.

I liked RT for the hero profiles that were unrelated to rank (champion, minor hero, major hero) and then later character titles that were basic or even unmentioned, so you could assign ranks as you saw fit.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

So the models and the book come together? And it’s all mega limited?

We don't know specifics, just that they should be coming together around the same time.

And it sounds like the "mega limited edition" has a special scenario or something that is based around the timeframe of the models in there.

I hope not, I really hate it when they are like "hey! theres this cool model that someone spent a lot of time making, and you want it, but we're going to make it fething impossible to get for 90% of the population and maybe 5 kits total. We hate money and go feth yourself."

The Tanith play quite fast and loose with the command structure there ain't a whole lot of Tanith Guardsmen to go around. Corbec and Rawne only got their commission because every other officer was dead and they had the guts to confront Gaunt about the poor state the Ghosts were in. The regimental command consists of three officers, Gaunt (because he's the only one with combat experience), Corbec, and Rawne, because that was all that was needed. Mkoll is the leader of the Scouts who are sort of inside but also outside of regimental structure as all of the CO's and NCO's take their recommendations and opinions as seriously as one from an officer.

Are you aware that enforced galaxy-wide standardization in the Guard functionally does not exist and never has? There are Guardsmen "regiments" that consist of "war chief and goons" and zero other distinctions.

There are a billion regiments fighting on a million fronts. As long as the work gets done very few people care how a regiment is run.

Yeah I always got the vibe that their order of battle was always small unit tactics and having all officers on the front lines. To this effect I saw that the Colonel was leading 2nd platoon but he was still the overall Colonel of the entire regiment. Id think of them more as "personal honor guard." This is just how he would go into battle since Tanith were all about getting stuck in and dirty compared to other units, which is also why Gaunt is so well respected by them as a frontline combatant. Really there are so few original Tanith soldiers left anyways it makes sense that they become an elite core led by their officers and all the other units they have absorbed over the years are run as regular rank and file.

Not only that but the vast scales of distance travelled means that reinforcements don't work the same way as they do in the real world. Regiments might get help from other regiments from other worlds, but if their own world is gone or too far away they might not see their own numbers directly increased. So they might well end up heavily fragmented from what they were, yet still being expected to perform well. Crafty and cunning commanders might manage to secure more troops as they go, but basically it is indeed the case that there's a rule-book of how you do war and then there's the real reality of just achieving what you can with what you've got
