Hey all,

I am curious to hear how you are enjoying 40k. Are you a person with a main army and a big focus on it with only a little side project? Or do you find yourself enjoying many different army projects?

For me, I looove starting new projects. Back when I played WoW, I could never really focus on a character but really enjoyed leveling alts. With 40k its the same. I am currentpy collecting Imperial Guard and Space Wolves and started a Nid project last december. I also have several(4-5) LotR armies. Some bigger, some just some troops amd heroes. Lately I bought soul wars and the sorrowmourn choir to delve into Nighthaunt. And now, I find myself really liking death guard. I just cant help it but I just love starting new smaller project over getting another 5k guard on top of my existing army. I love getting into the new army and reading and theorizing on it. I am also more of a painter atm than a player so, more variety helps me staying motivated.

What about you?

Nids ( and zergs, and Everblight...) are my one true love, but I easily fall into temptation.

I currently have 3 40K armies and one AoS.

I have a main army that started as a side army, but i've barely added to it recently.

For a couple of editions now most of my hobby time has been spent on small side projects that get added to based on model variety rather than tabletop use.

Up until 9th I played Salamanders exclusively(tho I had other armies forodeling/painting).

I've decided to put them aside for a while cuz I hate having a thematic list for me being a redonkulous OP one, not my style.

For 9th I've decided to build up other armies into playable forces.

Definitely am a many army, and that’s for any game I play.

For 40K I have at least 2,000 points for each:
- Space Marines (custom chapter, Dark Angels successor, 3 companies worth)
- Grey Knights (just a 500 pt. Detachment)
- Tau
- Admech
- IG
- Necron
- Tyranids
- GSC
- Eldar
- Custodes
- Knights
- Orks (my son’s, actually)
- CSM (again, my son’s)

For WHFB/AoS
- Vampire Counts
- High Elves
- Empire
- Lizardmen
- Skaven (starter set)

For WW2, I have a US & German army in 28mm, 10mm & 1/72 scale (as well as Dust versions).

I’ve also picked up all the factions (except separatists) for X-Wing, as well as Imps & Rebels for Armada.

And then there is there is the Mechwarrior clix figures (everything up to Age of Destruction and Highlander/Republic of the Sphere afterwards).

Star Wars Legion is about the only system so far I have managed to stick to one army - Imperial.

Toooo much stuff, and I don’t play a tenth of it, unfortunately - but, damn have I got a lot of toys to choose from.

I've had many armies in the past but I'm now down to my favourite core 2 of BA and CWE. I would recommend everyone has multiple armies it's just up to each person as to how far they want to go with it.

I'm a hybrid player; I start with many armies and my favourites get big enough to be main. I prefer this method for a few reasons, but primarily, I have a lot of friends who will play, but don't want to buy. Many small armies allows us to get games without any expense to my friends.

My four armies that are main or approaching that size are:

Sisters
Drukhari
GSC
Daemons of Slaanesh

Waiting in the wings, from largest to smallest:

CSM
CWE (Leaning to Slaanesh)
Guard
Admech
Nids

Started a small Deamons force to change it up a bit but only painted about 15 before going back to ultras

I'm a mono-army boy. I have over 5000 points of Orks and it's still growing.

Part of the reason why I didn't bother with IG and Black Templars, which were the runner ups for which 40k army I'd start, is that I'd be tempted to expand into other Imperial armies and that would absolutely finish off what's left in my wallet

Heh, Many Armies, to an embarrassing extent. For a long time I was pretty much an Ork player who also had marines because they came in the starters.

But in the last few years I got really into 40K again (the setting and the miniatures rather than the game rules) and picked up a small force of each of the factions I like.
So now I have:
Marines (Blood Angels from the 2e box, Crimson Fists from AoBR and Dark Vengeance, plus a few additional units. Mostly painted.)
Orks (ginormous army with well over 400 models. Almost all painted.)
Imperial Guard (old 2e metals with a few of the plastics thrown in, and a Necromunda Slave Ogryn gang and some Mantic Jeeps. Mostly painted, but I'm gonna strip and repaint them.)
Tyranids (a box or two of all the infantry, space hulk genestealers, and that big box of monsters they released a while ago. Unassembled!)
Necrons (Start Collecting, Praetorians, a Tomb Spyder and some Wraiths. Fully painted!)
Dark Eldar (Start Collecting, Warriors, Scourges, an extra raider and venom. Unassembled!)
Tau (Start Collecting, Pathfinders, Stealth Suits, Commander Shadowsun, and a Broadside. Unassembled!)
Chaos ( Dark Vengeance plus some extra cultists, poxwalkers, raptors and possessed. Half painted.)
I also got a pretty massive Forgefathers force to make some Squats/Demiurg. I wanted the Forge Father Starter Army from Mantic and some of their Drill models as vehicles, but Mantic kept sending me the wrong stuff so I ended up with a crapload of extra stuff on top, all of which is unassembled...

Eventually I'm gonna switch from painting fantasy stuff back to Sci Fi again and I'll be doing Chaos first. Then I want to do Tau, and after that probably Nids.

I'll be using these for RPGs set in the 40K universe and games of Grimdark Future. But I might give 9e a go at some stage.

Many armies. I've recently taken to restricting myself to two armies when starting new games (Commonwealth/Empire for Dystopian Wars, Arcanists/Neverborn for Malifaux) because I'm worried I'd end up buying one of everything like I'd done with X-Wing and Armada.

Many many armies. All 3k pts+ (several many times that #)

Currently I'm using my Necrons alot, & sometimes switching it up with SoB & SW.
I'll play these until the whim strikes to rotate them with something in storage.

This year I'm adding the Drukari to the collection as I can finally ALMOST build my ideal DE army - a Drukari force with no Elves in it! (I have to have at least one elf as the HQ - though I intend to put him in reserve & never pull the model out of the case whenever possible)

Some seriously impressive/scary collections in this thread, I’d love to see pictures of finished armies in all their glory but that might be another thread in itself.

I’ve managed to rapidly acquire a lot of Blood Angels since starting again last year, between the 8e and Indomitus boxes and some serious second hand deals I have about 3,000 points. Criminally I have only painted two models so far (Judiciar and Sanguinary Priest).

Mainly from the starter sets, I now have about 1,000 points each of Death Guard and Necrons. The DG are mostly painted (doing the last squad of Plague Marines now) and I’ve two units done for the Necrons (Warriors and Scarabs).

I don’t play any other wargames so it’s all 40K. If WHFB ever comes back in some form I will probably do a Chaos army for that but otherwise I’m not tempted by the other games now. AOS is not my thing at all.

The thing is, for the last 1 1/2 year I did basically nothing except work and painting. Rugby was off, so I had a lot of spare time. For me and my armies right now, the pile of shame is managable. I got basically all of the guard painted (some HWTs, 2 Russes and 3 Taurox Primes missing), maybe 75-80% of my Space Wolves) and for the nids I am missing 20 genestealers, 10 gargs and a Tervigon - I talked myself into tyranids under the promise, that I slow grow them and only buy stuff if I have painted most of them. Worked more or less thus far. But there IS still a lot of grey in my collection.

Now as I said before, I want to start Death Guard. Money right now is not the biggest issue, but I dont know if I can handle another unfinished project, adding more grey. So for now, they are postponed to the end of the year. If I can work some stuff off my pile of shame and maybe "finish" a project or two (as far as you can finish 40k armies), I think I will treat myself and buy some DG from my christmas bonus.

Realistically, this is why I'm a main army guy. I would like to have some other armies but funds don't allow for me to have sizable collections of several. So I focus on expanding my DG ever further so I have a variety of lists to play with rather than say, the same 3 lists every time because that's all I have for 3 armies. I personally prefer having options within an army rather than having the option of playing several armies if that makes sense.

I'm in the many camp. A good buddy of mine who got me back into 40k had several armies and he let me play them in order to learn the latest rules at the time.

That's a tradition I've carried forward, and it's nice to have more than one army on hand to introduce new players. I like to collect armies from different factions so it doesn't require any mental gymnastics to justify why they'd be fighting one another. Here are the ones our household has in the 1000+ point range.

Orks
CSM
Space Wolves
Eldar
Necrons
Sisters
Custodes

My wife loves Necrons and is remorseless when her Scarabs engulf my infantry.

I also have Admech, Raven Guard, Black Templars, 1k Sons, Khorne Daemons at a squad size level. Every FLGS we've been stationed at has had great Kill Team Nights so it's been fun to try out other factions at a much smaller entry point.

I have a problem of doing a small project then turning it into an army.
I painted up 5 Black Legion marines and ended up with 100 power worth. I did one model for the Badab Brothers event on Instagram and ended up with a Demi-Company of Mantis Warriors.
I wanted to do a small Drukhari army and now I have plans for an 150 power realspace raid detachment.

I have a main army, my Ultras.

But I also have a number of secondary armies.

There is always more I can add to the marines. I’m working up a second battle company and have some unhealthy percentage of the chapter. That’s going by the 1,000 men figure, missing a lot of the motor pool. Still 14k is points.

The Eldar are my classic secondly army, from way back. I’d add more, but am basically out of plastic stuff I want, and refuse finecast.

Tyranids are my quarantine army, and growing at a good clip.

Old WHFB armies not counted here, although are not small.

I'm completely a many armies person. From the moment I started playing DoW: DC, I knew I was interested in more than one faction. For a long time, I figured I would eventually play everything but Orks, Tyranids (and now their new sub-faction, GSC), and Dark Eldar. Since the pandemic, I have acquired a few old Dark Eldar and now plan to have a small force of them too. I'm still not that interested in the other two though. Nothing wrong with them per say, I actually think the lore behind them is cool, I just can't seem to find interest in playing them. Perhaps some day I buy a small completed army of the others to try every now and then.

My main factions by personal favor are IG, CSM, and SM in that order, though by points owned its heavily weighted to SM, then IG, with CSM being still pretty small. I think my Necrons have actually surpassed my CSM at this point with the Indomitus box counted in.

That’s actually one thing I’m quite happy with. I’m not an awesome painter, but in the last couple of years I’ve managed to paint all of my 40K armies (with the exception of some brand-new models), which in some cases consisted of primed/unpainted models stretching back to Rogue Trader days. Some of my work is here, if you’re interested.

I started playing just as Covid really started to take hold after I found my old collection of Space Marines and Wood Elves from when I was kid. Roped a couple of my closest friends in since we all had nothing to do due to quarantine and it's gone downhill from there! Now at around 8-9000 of BA and 5500 point of Necrons. I've already earmarked Tau as my 3rd 40K army once they get their new codex.

While I like to be able to mix up armies for more drastic shifts in play style, I also really enjoy the list building process and having a broad collection of an army's codex really let's me dabble and tweak. Most of my BA units with variable loadouts are all magnetized too so that I can play as WYSIWYG as possible.

Of course, it's all far from fully painted but it's all at least basecoated. My little gaming group is pretty lenient in that respect because it's primarily about the social aspect of getting together and hanging out. As long as we can point to a little progress each week, we can avoid being teased.
