First, we are not going back to 40K. This ruleset feels more like the 40K we used to love and play. and I do not mean the bloat of 7th, we did not get a game in. Nor can we afford to stay on the GW treadmill. We barely got games in during 8th and I fear we were going down the same path for 9th. So I am glad somebody recommended the rules, before that post went poof on a Facebook page.

Where the game shines is in solo play (I wish I discovered these during the lockdown, would have made the time pass somewhat faster. These days literally getting a game in during the afternoon, after writing and reading all day.)

I have been doing a short campaign of Firefight, and it is a fun little exercise. If you want a game that literally can be played in an afternoon, or less, with friends, or yourself. I am glad I found it

Yes, it is far more lethal than anything GW has ever produced. It is the probability curve. There are fewer dice events, DUH.

We are also NOT going to get AoS 3.0, where the bloat is back. We have a ruleset that literally uses the same engine (for the most part, there are a few differences, but they are minor). We are happy to play AoS 2.0, or quite frankly use Fantasy for the armies that are quite unplayable in AoS, because they are nerfed from the git go.

Do the lists have some issues? Sure...home rule the living daylights out of it, and you can contact the Dev, and they will listen. We all know GW does not. Are some lists all but balanced when facing another list? Sure. But so does GW bloat. So there is that.

And I am waiting for my first Nurgle 3D printed alternative that is far, far, far, far superior to anything GW is putting out. It is a chaos model, and damn it, it is properly dark. Of course, it might not be kid-safe and kids are literally the target audience at this point. I stopped being the target for GW some years back and I can live with that.

Another thing we like about Grimdark, is that a Kult of Speed behaves like one. Now to come up with the points for the stompa and the weapons and all that. The points calculator will be useful for that.

I've been trying to motivate myself to do some solo games. I want everything to look pretty at least before I do, which is my stumbling block!

Been painting terrain and objectives, so I certainly get that.

This is one of the only times I've read an account about OPR past it being "simple" or "easy to learn". Thanks for the insights!

I'm planning to do a video review of Firefight at some point. My methodology involves playing the game solo about 20 times over, ideally with solo rules, ideally ideally in the context of a campaign if the system supports it.

One thing really throwing me off for prep is the amount of terrain they want me to use. "15-20" pieces of terrain on a 4x4 is a lot, and also horribly vague.

What kid of configurations worked best for your games? Would you recommend denser or sparser terrain to make the games more engaging?

Also, about how long is one game when you're playing solo?

I have played a few games of Age of Fantasy: Skirmish, and I typically use probably 8-10 pieces of terrain on a 3x4 foot gaming area. 3-4 woods blobs (about 6" in diameter each) to give both line of sight blocking, and cover + difficult terrain for units traversing them, some low difficult terrain that can still be shot over, and a few buildings that have either an open top or ruins with an upper floor and windows to shoot out of while still giving cover.

That works really well, and I would probably break the areas up even a little more for Firefight because it has so much more ranged combat involved, lest it become a boring shooting gallery.

Cheers, I'll keep that in mind. I've purchased the Firefight rulebook and it's suggesting halving ranges and movement when playing on a 3x3 for kitchen table game rules. Halving feels a bit much for a 3x3, though I think it'd work great on a 2x2.
