Something that popped in mind while writing rules for tournament I will be running 31.7. How do you think tournaments will handle terrain in AOS3?

Looking at scenarios default seems to be "player A sets up terrain, player B decides which side he wants to play". So one player sets up as he/she wish(following limitations), to ensure it's not just in his/her favour opponent picks up side he/she wants.

Previously at least here pre-determined terrain was normal for tournaments. Do you see that continuing and just dice off for choosing side?

I could see table having set amount of pieces following scenario recommendations which players then sort out as per rules but worried in further rounds players just leave them as they were sort of negating point of AOS3 rules...

Thoughts?

Normally at a tournament the TOs set up the terrain, and as a neutral third party they have no incentive to bias the terrain towards one side or the other. The terrain pieces remain however they were set up the entire event, but players roll for mysterious themselves each round.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Yea. But AOS3 seems to be aiming for one player to set up terrain(so bias all you wish) but opponent then picks up the side so if you bias one side in your favour...opponent picks up side so you are screwed.

I can see idea especially on pick up games where that works with recommended amount of terrain pieces(with very large counting as 2/4) and rules on distances to other so it stops worst issues(no cramming board so full opponents melee army can't reach you while you hit with non-LOS shooting and flying models go to objectives) but wondering how that works in practice in tournament. Time in particular.

In AoS 2 currently, the rules state that players alternate placing terrain. No event has followed those rules. I imagine this will be another ignored ruled for competitive play.

The last GHB has the same setup as 3.0 does. Player A sets up and B chooses sides. It’s not new.

I dont see tournaments changing for AOS3. Terrain has been largely the same in tournaments for the past 25 odd years.

The TO sets up the tables. Usually in whatever format is "standard".
