Well, thanks to those inbound dragons & dragon riders, it looks like I'll be building a Stormcast army this edition.
I could've resisted if the two true dragons were too expensive pts wise to serve as allies.
Or maybe get one to serve with my CoS forces, keywords permitting.

But being able to field a whole army built from good looking dragons & dragon riders?
Damn it.

I know, I know! I want a dragon rider army so bad now!

Yep, I've already been working on a dragon-only army but being unable to take dragon battleline was the hamstring. Now that that's not an issue, an army of Draconiths, Dracoths, Dracolines, Stardrakes, and Krondys/Karazai is in reach.

Having just taken the plunge into AoS with, you guessed it, Stormcast Eternals, I'm super excited for the dragons! My wallet, less so, since the big dragon (I'm assuming it's one kit that can make either one of them) will probably cost $150+.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

yeah the big dragons are going to be the "big expensive centerpiece" of the SCE armies. I wanna get one but I might hold off buying immediatly as TBH I think they'll be so expensive points wise you'd be forced into a TINSY army. but yeah I've got dominion and figure that adding some dragons to it would be the perfect way to bring it up to 2000 points

I'm fully expecting them to be around $200 - just like the Mega-Gargants.

Definitely, the big named dragons will likely be the same price as the Mega Gargants, the riders probably a little less looking at the size.

I’ve long been tempted to get the WizKids chromatic dragons for D&D to proxy a Flesh Eaters all dragon/bat army. This all dragon Stormcast is going to be so difficult to resist.

I saw the named dragons in the preview, don't know if they are the same dragon rider kit, I think they look horrible, they have humanistic facial expressions, like the 'Dragonheart' movies.

This dragon rider kit looks bad too, only due to the ridiculous small wings, the poor thing shouldn't even be able to fly, let along carrying a fully decked rider.

The named Dragons will be a different kit to the dragon riders, very different sculpts.

Personally I think they look absolutely incredible, some of the best models GW has ever produced. But I guess no model is ever going to be for everyone.

I have to agree with Big Mac, they are pretty awful. The dragon riders just look stupid - no way they could take off. The named dragons look boring and comical.

Archon studio's have a load of dragons leagues better than these new GW sculpts. Once I've built a few of mine I'll test them with a Vindictor for size, but I don't think they'll be a great fit - a 40mm model in full plate is going to need something with a gigantic wing span!

Give it a few moments & I'm sure you'll be able to find 3d printed heads more to your liking.

Well, I guess it's a good thing they fly around in a world full of magic then....

My concern about their wing size is: How am I going to transport my new army?

Nothing in AoS has a wingspan that would let it fly, I don’t know why we’re so focused on these.

Partly because they could have been really great models.
No flying stand, no rider, saddle, etc and they would have been amazing dragons. But instead they're a series of missteps keeping them from greatness.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I will defend GW on the wing size; realistic wing size simply wouldn't be practical for tabletop use. Also, like weapon & armor mass, the shark has been thoroughly jumped by other parties to set a lame precedent.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I'm pretty sure my Fell Bats, Terradons, & the high elf Phoenix have sufficient wings. Hell, the Phoenix is about the same size as a real bird.

If you really want to go with realism, square cube law says that the wingspan of a "real" phoenix would be much larger proportionally to it's body than that of the bird the model is the size of, so no, that phoenix model isn't realistically scaled.

Even in 3D printing wings are tiny compared to models for most. If you want realistic wings you might have to go down to 15mm models (and even then some of them are incorrect like the vast Joan of Arc dragon). We have these things all over the place in models because doing true scale on many things is just impractical to model. Even if you can do it sometimes its just not practical for a gaming model that you're going to handle a lot.

I'm totally happy with the dragons save that they aren't for Slaanesh/Ossiarchs/Daughters of Khaine ;P

I do love them and heck perhaps one day I'll do a small Stormcast Dragon themed army. That said I'm holding out for the Shadow Aelves and Malarion's forces who are hinted at being slightly draconic as well (though that's super early lore - Lumineth haven't got any angelic units, or at least typical feather winged angels as yet).

Exactly this. Being the same size as a bird is very much the problem. These dragons would need like a two foot wingspan to be able to fly, which would be really annoying on the board.

"man if only these where completely differant models they'd be perfect"

seriously when you look at a model for a "dragon knight" and complain there's a guy riding the dragon you're basicly in "silly territory"

One person's series of missteps is another's person's perfection I guess. If they aren't for you that's fine and fair enough, but it doesn't mean GW messed up. They just aren't for you.

For me they didn't miss greatness, they are great. Love these models, fantastic work.

If you don't want GW to continue draining you dry like some gorram financial succubus, you could always keep it in your pants ...

... your wallet, that is.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
