Followers of the Cult of Kariman rejoice! Announcing the arrival of the Alessi Novitiate, a new command option for the Karist Enclave!

Alessi are usually amongst the first Karists to arrive on a new world, moving quietly amongst the populace for some time spreading their faith and gathering recruits. And when the time comes for battle, they are amongst the first to take up arms, leading their followers to glory and ascension.

This plastic kit includes one Alessi Novitiate, with an optional angel hatchling pet.

The Alessi Novitiate is a Command unit for the Karist Enclave. You can find the rules for this unit in the Force Lists section of the Maelstrom's Edge website here.

Great to see a new Karist model, especially in plastic.

I think a small bit of fluff pertaining to what exactly an "Alessi Novitiate" is would be in order, but I take from novitiate that we're talking about a lower-ranked clergyman? Is "Alessi" a reference to one of the original founders?

The priest himself is well-posed, although a couple of alternate bits would have been nice. (I know we can and will still crib a bunch of alternate limbs from other sprues.) This isn't just a combat model per se, so the lack of a helmet makes thematic sense here. But as a matter of personal taste, I just want to mention that I've liked pretty much every Karist helmet variant you guys have come up with so far, and would enjoy seeing more in the future.

He's wielding some kind of hammer, right? Is that weapon a Karist thing for novitiate priests? Or just a personal choice for this guy? I don't think we've seen that weapon in their arsenal before.

Probably my favorite aspect of the new piece is the young Angel that comes with him. Great touch, and nice to see a smaller land-morphed version of these beasts. There's so much you can do with the polymorphic Angels ("you" including both publishers and kitbashers.) But the problem with Angels is that they're inscrutable and generally squirrelly at religious services, so its hard read this one's expression: is it enthralled by its master's sermon, or trying to stifle a yawn?

The Kaddar are the priest caste within the Karist organisation. Kaddar Novae, who were introduced with the original Battle for Zycanthus box, are focused on bringing enlightenment to the masses in a rather violent fashion. The Kaddar Alessi, however, are the more traditional type of priest, who prefer to use oratory rather than physical means to sway their enemies and inspire their followers. The Alessi Novitiate is a mid-ranking priest, more accomplished than the Proselytisers who often accompany small military units, but not yet a fully fledged Kaddar Alessi.

There are a few more military units in the pipeline, which will definitely give us the opportunity to play with some more helmet variants.

Yes, the cybel scepter is a new piece of gear, and is a badge of office for the various priestly ranks from Proselytiser up, although not usually wielded in battle by Novae as they have their own more specialised gear.

Even veteran Angel Keepers find it hard to tell just what is going through an Angel's mind, most of the time.

Unless they're hungry.

I guess you could say that the Alessi yell loudly and carry a big stick?

Seriously, I suppose the design of this sci-fi clergyman is influenced by the (popular in fantasy games, but apparently historically contested) idea that medieval clergy used maces to avoid shedding blood. Interesting.

There's also a less military and weapon-like feel to a symbolic mace, as opposed to a sword or a holy six-shooter or whatever. It's a badge of office that serves as a weapon, rather than a weapon as a badge of office, if that makes sense.
