This month, the theme is "Catch Me If You Can”. Whether through enhanced mobility, technology or just sheer speed, some combatants are just hard to pin down. Entries should feature models capable of moving in a fast or unpredictable manner that gives them the upper hand in combat.

As always, feel free to vote for as many entries as you feel deserve recognition, and for any reason, be that the quality of the paintjob or modeling, the interpretation of the theme, the effort on show or anything else you think deserves a nod. You're also very welcome to leave some feedback for the entrants, and many of the images link through to the Dakka gallery, so throw them a vote there as well if you fancy. The poll will run for 5 days.

Interesting mix of models this month, well done all.

I think my favourite is Maharg’s super clean Ravenwing, very nice black!

For me, Star Lord is head and shoulders above the others in terms of painting. The detail there is incredible!

I really loved the Ork vehicles too, though - I must have a go at making some sometime!

Another great set of models this month, with a lot of different interpretations of the theme. Good job, everyone!

theCrowe: These are another set of original sculpts, right? I love the fancy waistcoat and stripey pants!

Mr Nobody: All the various shades of blue are totally in keeping with the classic swooping hawk colors, and the warm golds really pop against the cool background colors. I would have liked to see the model from different angles.

me: This was my homage to David Bowie, who was about as glam as one could get. I based his paintjob on Aladdin Sane era Bowie rather than ZIggy Stardust, mostly because of the face paint, but also because of the awesome striped pantsuit/leotard he wore.

Nevelon: You wrote in you P&M blog how much you disliked painting this model, but it turned out great. I like the deep red, which really stands out against the base. The weapons turned out great, as well.

the_balloon_dog: Wow, there is just so much to look at with this model. The rusted metal is particularly effective.

Captain Brown: What a fun kitbash. I especially like the blue fade on the wings.

Flinty: The color variation between the bikes was a good choice-- every piece feels unique, despite being the same sculpt. The tarps turned out really well-- I'll have to give that a try someday.

Viterbi: That's a nice little action scene you've set up. The slightly brighter red on the "DD" is a nice call-back to the comics.

More comments as I find time. Again, good job, everyone!

Thanks Josh. Even if modern Necromunda is more PMC than desperate scum, I still felt that jetbike riders would be bringing their own flair to the game. Also I was googling for super bike colour schemes as inspiration and saw an awesome Neon Genesis Evangelion homage that I had to copy

Your wardancer trousers came out amazingly well. Next time there is a glam rock versus Asterix gladiator game coming along, you, sir, will be sorted

Voting was hard as it always is.

Here's a few comments, not in any sort of order:

JoshInJapan: Somehow this mini just really appealed to me. The base, the subtle colors and the NMM swords tie the model together really nicely.

Tyranid Horde: These look so tasty! Bonus points for the radar effects on the base!

Chris56: I think this is the most models from different armies I've seen in a diorama. Very fitting to the theme and actually made me laugh (in a good way). Nice work.

Viterbi: Like I said in the contest thread, I really like the take on the theme. Great work on the minis as well!

the_balloon_dog: From one speedfreek to another: Nice conversion! Especially love that engine

Before this comment, I never knew how much I needed a glam rock vs. Asterix game. Now I'm not sure I can live without it.

Ezki wrote:

Thanks. The swords were a PITA (there must be at least ten layers of paint on them), but I'm pleased with how the model turned out in the end.

More comments:

Ezki: Those are some wonderfully chaotic Orky vehicles. The one in the upper photos looks like it was made from a jet engine, with the driver sitting right in the middle of the exhaust stream, waiting to get burned in half. If that isn't the epitome of Ork Teknolojy, I don't know what is.

GG and Xvy14: Lovely work on your first models. Keep it up and you'll be better than all of us someday!

Koreg: I love the dark burgundy/red you used, and the necron parts as so well integrated that it took me a while to figure out what they were!

Freya: There is a lot going on with this model. It must have been difficult to photograph, what with all the various parts sticking out every which way. I would have liked at least one more photo, maybe from further away so that everything was in better focus.

DV8: Your use of highly saturated colors (is that the right term? I'm not an artist) matches the model to both its MSU counterpart and the four-color origins of the character.

Pariah Press: Another sweet classic model. The pink nose and the christmas lights in the gun are great little details.

KidCthulhu: An interesting take on a very old model. He would look right at home in a WHFB regiment of Chaos Warriors as well as on the Astrogranite.

Paradigm: Your grimy take on the model makes him look like he's seen some action.

Tyranid Horde: I always love seeing models for games I don't play. It makes me feel like my horizons are broader than they are. The radar blips are, indeed, a sweet little detail.

DJJazzyJeff: Purple warpstone is a nice way to make these models unique, and the green glow on the bases really draws the eye .

Chris56: What a fun action scene! I like the freehand harlequin mask and the worn-off yellow checks on the buggy. Does the Vyper have a pilot?

Final round of comments.

Maharg: Grimdark as a style produces some really nice models, but smooth and clean never goes out of style. Lovely work.

Gulgog Tuftoof: I like the two-tone effect between the underbelly and the rest of the bodies, and the eyes are lovely as well.

Jamie Shred: I'd be glad to face a unit looking this good in battle. I like the pale blue lighting claws and the marble-effect on the shields.

MobileSuitRandom: Every model having similar bases really ties this scene together. The blue-grey skin on the Bloodbore (vampires? lycanthropes?) really sells their bestial nature.

Midget Gems: I like the how you kept all the models' nearly identical, in keeping with Stormboy lore.

Rybrook: The reverse highlights, with the hard edges being darker than the flat plates, makes the bike look like it's seen some action. That's a cool attack bike base, too. Did you make that just for this model?

Turaxa: That's a sweet callback to a classic model. The blue and white striped sleeve came out particularly well-- stripes like that are irritatingly difficult to paint.

Vejut: I'm amazed that you never seem to run out of cool animals to paint. The anteater's fur came out particularly well.

ms07b3: That's a great interpretation of this model. The gems are great, as it the fire-y staff.

Everyone: Congratulations on getting something finished. Let's keep inspiring each other to achieve greater and greater things!

Thanks Josh and Ezki for the comments! And @Ezki: I always try to fit the theme as close as possible, because my painting won't get better in this life

My favorites this month were:

JoshInJapan: Love the facepaint and one can imagine people chasing him to see him lead them to a pot of gold, but instead massacring them at the end of the rainbow

Captain Brown: No one will catch that Farseer. Red ones may be faster, but he looks much chiller with the blue accents on the white wings.

Ezki: As posted on your plog, I love the movement you got into the miniature and the sense of speed. And the headswap certainly doesn't hurt to make it more unique.

DV8: It's the buttons that really put him over the edge for me and you can't imagine how miffed I was after building my own, that they are custom made by you Great work and lovely glow effects on his jetpacks and the guns.

Tyranid Horde: I know how small those minis are, so I'm very impressed at all the fine work on the lines between the panels Great job!

And this month I vary from my usual 5 to 6 and add

DJJazzyJeff: These Doomwheels will be very hard to catch, because if you give chase you will end in the rotten water on their bases. Love all the details and they are very fitting to the theme.

I feel like that’s as close to a personal endorsement from David Bowie himself as I’m ever going to get.
Yes, they’re all my own greenstuff bunnies (with some plastic bits-box weapons), but Glam is clearly the winner on the stripey pants catwalk. Great job, great homage to the legend.

Plenty more to say about the rest. But I’ll have to draw up a bigger post later on. So much awesome work on show.

Cheers! I mean what you're saying makes sense, so unless you mean something else

It's funny because until I started collecting MCP, my work had always been softer and more of a pastel pallete, and it's only with these comic pieces that I've tried to shift it back into more saturated colors like I used to paint when I was much younger. I'm glad it's translating!

Viterbi wrote:

Thank you! The buttons are actually super easy to do! They're just little blobs of brown stuff that I squished into flat little circles. I probably made about 2 dozen of them, and then picked the ones that were small enough to look right, but big enough to freehand onto.

My 3 picks, in no particular order other than posting:

Paradigm - ARC Troopers

Excellent work on the armor. I wish this game had a stronger local community; I'd love to get into this (droids all day err day), but supply chain issues due to COVID has meant the LGS has had trouble getting almost everything in stock, which makes it hard to get into. /rant/ your work is excellent though and makes me want to pick up a few pieces in the new year to paint.

Tyranid Horde - Aeronautica Eldar Flyers

EDIT: Realized it didn't actually post my comment! Really clean work, and I think the style suits the scale of the miniatures. I like the different markings on each one, and the radar blips/scans on some of the bases is a nice touch!

Maharg - Ravenwing Biker

Very crisp highlighting work, and it contrasts well with all the clean white that you've executed very well. You should definitely put a marking on the right shoulderpad though; feels a little blank. And I think the black armor in spots looks a little thick, which shows up in the photographs.

Some quick thoughts just to give everyone some feedback.

I’ve been having more fun sculpting than painting lately and joining the competition is literally the only thing making me reach for a brush these days. But I’m set in my ways as painting goes so I see a lot of what you’re all doing and just think wowzers, NMM, OSL and all manner of weathering that seems far and away up on another level. But thanks to anyone who threw a vote my way. It’s great encouragement to keep going.

Mr Nobody -Baharroth.
There’s some nice colour choices going on here and I can see a lot of good shading and highlighting detail but I feel like your photo is letting you down. I’ll bet those wings are spectacular from behind and I’d love to see an angle from below looking him in the face as he descends. You’ve got 6 pictures to use to give us a good look around all the best angles to really show off your work.

JoshInJapan -- Glam the Wardancer.
Lovely classic miniature. I’ve painted many a wardancer in my days but none with so subtle a colour pallet, such excellent NMM silverware and so glamorous a pair of stripey trews. You didn’t slouch on the basing either. And the warpaint adds more than just a 6+ ward save.

Nevelon – War Walker.
That can’t be an easy kit to assemble and especially in that dynamic running pose which you’ve really nailed. Not a massive fan of the kit but you’ve made a good clean job of it with a smooth finish in an uncomplicated scheme. And the base sets it off in a great contrasting tone. I would say your photos could use a better key light in front.

the_balloon_dog -- Shokk jump dragsta
Loving these new ork vehicles (I’m an old GorkaMorkan and frankly anything post 6th ed is new to me!) no idea what’s kit and what’s your own bashing but that’s the joy of orkdom isn’t it. Love displaced radiator and the bucket-seated crew with zero visibility. The paint job is wonderfully chaotic, with suitably excessive rust and distress all very believably rendered. But best of all is the base. Clean, black and angled. Frames the madness perfectly and doesn’t over complicate the already complex item on display. Super choice!

Captain Brown -- Farseer Wearing Faolchu's Wings
You think you know a guy... I mean, this 2nd ed Eldar range are so familiar, iconic, evergreen, an all-Time classic range that have seen every paint scheme and army theme under the sun for the last 30 years and you think you’ve seen it all and then this happens. Never seen that before, but now you’ve done it it seems so obviously perfectly simple. Like it’s been there all along. Great electric blue in the robes and subtly echoed in the shading of red white feathers. And having seen what this mini looked like before you worked your magic and blew my mind it’s all the more worthy of a well deserved vote.

Flinty -- Grav-cutter jetbikes
3D prints gone wonky? Gone 2 out of five on useable bikes? Not to worry, says Flinty, wang an old tarp over ‘em and call it some cover. Objective markers, terrain features that might explode with a well placed hot-shot round. The bikes with riders are neat too and all the more for what it took to produce them, but it’s the hobbyist at work I want to celebrate here. Good show.

Viterbi -- Daredevil vs. Green Goblin
These guys are giving me flashbacks to a make your own comic animations game I used to play (that kept crashing my mate’s PC) especially with that concrete grey rooftop piece. You’ve got the classic colour palate spot on and the effect on the smoke is really nice. A bit more light in the photos or a closer close up might help us appreciate your work better.

Ezki -- Megadrag Scrapjet
Another pair of wonderfully orky machines. Enjoying the flame motif around the old air intake and along the spoiler. The long horns on your driver is a fun addition. Lots of excellent rust on both and authentic looking rubber wheels on the scrapjet. The unified paint scheme helps bring these two very different machines together well.

GG -- Orc Blitzer
As any good ork will agree he’s green where he needs to be and has enough red to make sure he goes as fast as possible. Nice bit of golden bling too to show he’s not just some average blocker he’s a proper MVP. And anything with a goblin green base gets a big thumbs-up from me.

Xvy14 -- THE GINGERBREAD MAN
Not only fully painted but fully sculpted too! And perhaps the ultimate poster child of the “Catch me if you can” theme. As a big fan of self-sculpted figures for games with the upcoming generation I say it’s an inspired choice and as any Necromunda veteran can attest dual wielding bolt-pistols is nothing to be sniffed at. Love the pink and blue buttons but even more the eyes, the eyes! He knows you’ll never catch him alive.

Koreg -- Outriders
Great shadowy red tones and the gradients you’ve got going on are giving some depth what might otherwise have been a very flat red scheme. The left arms with their black and gold elements, and hazard striped chainswords are doing a lot of heavy lifting in the scheme too. So much so that the absence of a chapter symbol isn’t an issue. The necron bits too are a fun addition. These guys may look super sharp and clean but they aren’t on parade, they’re here to party.

Freya – Smash Captain
The wings are astonishingly good. It’s a triumph of metal feathery greatness. I’d have liked to see a shot from below to get a better view of the face but maybe the light or the angle just want making it work. Some minis don’t translate well to 2D. He’s a really cool mini and of course you haven’t put a brushstroke wrong here.

DV8 -- Starlord
This is a real standout for me. Wowzer! What a great looking result. The hair, the coat the blasters all outstanding. The smoke comes across like it’s straight out of a comic panel. And the addition of those little contrasting buttons is a perfect finish to a super dynamic mini.

Pariah Press – Space Santa
This mini is one of those esoteric oddities of old that have become part of the fabric of our history. You’ve hunted him down, cleaned him up and turned him out for the festive season. A service to the whole hobby community. He’s a gnarly old sculpt with some idiosyncrasies that you’ve had to work around like all these old style buffers but you’ve turned him out lovely especially his face with a rosey nose and all. Superb.

KidCthulhu -- Garak Grigolson
Now this one here is another example of the same kind of vintage heritage I was talking about. Back when chaos meant chaos, they had an almost anything goes ethos to mini design that resulted in some all time freakydeaky creations. Looking at the sculpt I can imagine it wasn’t very generous to the painter. Not many nice sharp edges or crisp details to pick up, not much of a face to draw the eye. The whole thing is a strangely misshapen figure that’s actually quite typical of much of the original Blood Bowl range. I feel like I can still see the putty in the sculpt, like if I wasn’t careful I’d squash the wrinkles out of that purple sash on his back. It’s nice to take a moment to appreciate a mini like this on its own, unobstructed by a team of similarly squashy chaotic oddities. At first glance he’s plain and unassuming but the dark tones you’ve chosen contrasted with the unblemished silver give him an air of mystery and otherworldliness. It’s the sense of some twisted magic darker and thicker than blood dripping along the edge of a sharp unholy blade.

Ok that’s about halfway so I’ll break for now before the poetic muses take me away completely. More to follow when I can get back to it. I aim to comment on all if I can.

Thanks, I wasn't actually feeling too good about this mini but if it's worthy of comment from a regular challenge winner, who am I to argue? I've done a bunch more Clones since, and I'm definitely getting a little better on the armour using a makeup sponge method for the initial application, makes it a lot crisper than my half-blind brushwork!

This is actually a 3d printed mini, though it's a pretty good match for my handful of FFG Legion minis in terms of scale and detail. If the Legion supply chain issues are holding you up and you happen to have access to a 3d printer, check out Seb Miniatures (where this ARC Trooper is from), Skullforge Studios and Dark Fire Designs. Obviously you won't get all the endless FFG cardboard gubbins so it might not help for actually playing Legion, but if you're just after a few Star Wars minis to paint (doubly so for more obscure characters), there's some great stuff out there.

Love your work on Starlord, your MCP stuff is always good but this one especially so, the badges and patches add a ton of personality.

Wow, that is poetic! Thank you for the praise!

My regret is not getting a chance to take better pictures so you could see the purple tint on the metallic areas.

I have another Chaos star player that I use for a Slaanesh Sorcerer. Has a similar palette but with some splashes of pink in there. Ironically, I think the star player is actually dedicated to Khorne, but all the smooth armor plates and faceless helmet just screamed Slaanesh to me.

Midget Gems -- Ork Stormboyz - Getting anything done was an achievement so I'll take it

Rybrook --Blood Angels attack bike - Nice clean painting job, the yellow really stands out and the base looks very good as well.

Turaxa -- Eldar Harlequin - A colorful attempt at an very retro model, well done.

Vejut – Anteater and Owl - more very interesting models i've not seen before, great to see your entries Vejut

ms07b3 -- TS demon prince - Love the wings and the mix of colors.

Well that wraps up another month. Time for some winners. Very tight month this time, with just one vote separating each spot on the podium and a tie for second.

In 3rd, Captain Brown’s Farseer Wearing Faolchu's Wing with 20 votes. Classic metal with a vibrant paintjob. Well done!
Spoiler:

Continuing the theme of classic lead is Glam the Wardancer by JoshInJapan. Amazing work on the swords and stripy pants got you the silver this month.
Spoiler:

Sharing second place are some amazing entries from Ezki’s mekshop. A pair of ork racers zooming to the finish in a belch of smoke, rust and dakka!

Spoiler:

And squeeking out the win by a single vote is DV8’s Starlord. Smooth colors and the attention to detail that we’ve grown to expect, another amazing piece of work here.
Spoiler:

As always congrats to all who entered this month, especially the new faces. Keep up the good work, and see you in the open round!

Thank you Nevelon, for running this month's competition. Well done to everyone who participated and reduced their pile of unpainted miniatures.

Cheers,

I was close but no cigar! Well done to the winners and everyone for participating, I'll drop some votes this weekend and if I have time to give some feedback. Big ups to Nev again for getting this organised.

Thanks to those who provided me with feedback, it's really appreciated!

Personal favourites in no particular order this month were from DV8, Chris56, Captain Brown, MobileSuitRandom and Ezki.

Back again with the second half of my feedback comments.

Paradigm -- ARC Trooper with jetpack
I really loved this entry. I’m a big fan of this kind of messy style where a great effect is achieved with a quite painterly style that becomes more apparent up close. Love the blues in the highlighting and the shading in the white armour is really excellent.

Tyranid Horde -- Eldar flyers
These are just so good. I love the bone and green colour scheme and the asymmetry in the striping. Really sharp and smooth finish. The bases are excellent too. Each individual flier is a unique piece and the the overall effect of the group together is really striking. One of my favourite entries this month.

DJJazzyJeff -- Doomwheels
The whole concept of the doomwheel demonstrates the central comedy of Skaven. And as a hamster owner I just love it. Makes me almost want to hook some diabolical devices to Cookie’s wheel and let him rip. “How’d’ya like me now kitties?!” Anyway, the paint job is just what we expect from Skaven, grimy and dark with glory elements of wyrdstone technology. But the bases are where these really shine (har har, couldn’t help it) and as any TMNT fan will know if the sewers are glowing green like that you better expect mutated giant rats.

Chris56 – The Chase!
Such a lot of work to put this whole thing together and a great fun concept to play with, wacky races comes to 40k. Everyone in their position feels like they’re telling a part of the story, the orks out in front fending off the chasers with a massive rear facing gun, the biker marine mixing it up at close quarters, the big bold blue Viper swooping in behind, even the little hormagaunt on foot seems like he could really be in with a shot. Great variety of styles and techniques on show to bring each of them to life.

Maharg -- Ravenwing biker
This would’ve been number one for me. I saw this fella and just smiled. Black armour, done really well. I’ve got a whole box of Raven Guard and not one of them ever had a hope receiving a paint job of this kind of quality. A simple scheme done with precision and skill. Just really clean and effective.

Gulgog TufToof -- Squighogs
Really fun minis to choose. Love bright blue and white plates contrasting the dark reds. And the purple tongues are a nice touch. No riders but time taken on these guys was well spent and well worth taking so as not to rush the job.

Jamie Shred -- Blood Angels Vanguard Vets
Nice mix of armour bits on how here and I like the way you’ve done the shields to contrast with the red and gold. The contrasting lighting claws too are a good focus point.

MobileSuitRandom -- Qulathis vs Vyrkos Blood-born
Nice muted tones for the badguys vs some more heroic colours. You’ve given them all a very atmospheric paint job that tones right in with the set/terrain/map, especially around the bases. Some really nice textures coming from the shading and highlighting in the furs.

Midget Gems -- Ork Stormboyz
What’s better than a big stompy mobbif orks? A big stompy mob of orks with rokkits on their backs! A great rendering of the classic style with checkerboard and red nose cones. Ticks all the orky boxes.

Rybrook --Blood Angels attack bike
Another Space Marine classic on display here. Love those bright yellow helmets and your uniquely shaped base of course. Had it been edged in goblin green I’d’ve been loving the 90’s stylings even more.

Turaxa -- Eldar Harlequin
Without the side by side pic of the orginal artwork it kinda loses something. It was a worthy thought to have a go at recreating that scheme from the image. I wouldn’t have fancied attempting those checkerboard pants either

Vejut – Anteater and Owl
Knowing there’s at least one other B&B fan on Dakka is helping me feel like my current obsession isn’t such a deviation from the norm. Lovely blue and white scheme on the owl and the mottled patten in the feathers came out great. The masked sneaking anteater in an interesting figure though I’d be tempted to cut his head off and turn it facing forward. From a facing perspective it’d bother me. Is all the gold he’s wearing stolen?

ms07b3 -- TS demon prince
What a way to sneak a last minute entry in under the wire! Holy smokes. The skin tone looks great and the blue and gold scheme in general is really strong. Love the contrasting spears in completely different styles. Very nice indeed.

And of course big thanks to Nevelon for running the competition. Your hard work and dedication is really appreciated. Thanks.

It seems like a need to put more attention into my photography. I'll keep that lesson in mind for next time.

the_balloon_dog - I absolutely love all the weathering that went into this model. Every square inch has some form of corrosion, staining or chipping on it. One day, I'll get my own ork vehicles to this level.

MobileSuitRandom - It's a great paint job, but the scene you've quickly set up with the board and the model arrangement really sells the whole thing.

Xvy14 - It might not be the greatest paintjob in the world, but I had to vote for it just for the idea alone. Festive and hilarious.

So late but thanks for the feedback, the base is not my own design, I found it on ebay looking resin bike bases.
The 90s style I like but won't fit with my army so no green base, it was a gamble for the bike though it was either the plastic one I painted or the metal sidecar one.

Still time to enter the open round if they have anything they want to run with.
