I am a 40K player, but I played a few (six?) games of AOS in 2nd Ed with Stormcast Eternals. Our FLGS announced a beginner-friendly 3rd Edition 1500 three-round tourney and since the Bills were playing Monday night I had a free Sunday. I planned to take my SCE, but our discussion board mentioned that ten players were already bringing them. I was also advised that my Fulminators were quite "meta." The day before I remembered that I had the Blades of Khorne in a box. I had painted the Blood Reavers following along with Duncan during the 2nd Wave of the pandemic. A call for help netted me some Bloodletters to fill out a squad (for some reason I had some lying around), and I learned that I could take my old Chaos Warriors that had sat alone, unpainted in a box for a decade. I spent Saturday evening with my airbrush and Carraborg Crimson while listening to Youtube videos about how to play Blades of Khorne. These would be my first games of 3rd Edition.

I had Khorgos Krol, the Bloodstoker, the Bloodsecrator, the Skulltaker, two squads of Blood Reavers (one 20 strong), a ten-man unit of Blood Warriors, a Khorgorath, a twenty-strong squad of Bloodletters, three Blood Crushers and five Chaos Knights. I picked Sever the Head for my Grand Strategy - seemed Khornish?

Game 1 vs Kharandon Overlords

He had two airships with little dudes with guns on board plus three Heroes and Gotrek. I figured I would have to play the objective game. I went first and moved onto three Objectives. He then had a fairly devastating double turn that wiped out my Demons (less the Skulltaker). I sent Krol and the Blood Warriors into Gotrek, along with the Khorgorath. I learned that the Reality-Splitting Axe doesn't really work on Gotrek and lost all three units. I was able to do some shenanigans with Blood Tithe to drop Bloodletters into places to score Battle Tactics, and the Skull Taker did slay his Warlord who was cowering on his frigate. Pretty epic really. I got one Chaos Knights charge off on a Frigate but only brought it down a bracket. His firepower cleaned my Blood Reavers off objectives and he in Turn 5. A close game on points if not on body count. Learned some of the mechanics of the game - didn't really use any synergies! Avoiding Gotrek would seem to the be most prudent course of action in the future. Not very Khorne though.

Game 2 vs Orruks

He had a big squad of Orruks on Boars, three squads of boys, a squad of Aardboyz (?), two Warchanters, a Warboss and a Shaman. He dropped his Boarboyz into my backtable and took out squad of Reavers while another squad of boyz (buffed to damage 2) wiped out the Bloodletters. My counterpunches didn't really do enough damage, and I was ground down in a battle of attrition. He didn't have much left at the end, but I was down to the Skulltaker and some summoned Bloodletters. My Skulltaker did kill his Warlord, a Warchanter and a Shaman (but was unable to catch the last Warchanter - curses!). Taking skulls is his job I suppose. It was a close game again on points but still a loss. I am told, however, that Khorne does not care from whom the blood flows?

Game 3 vs Stormcast Eternals

He had Ynasda, two squads of Annihalators, two squads of Vindicators (the spear dudes), the new archer, some other character and some Gryph hounds. He dropped in behind me (wasn't tracking the 7" deepstrike mechanic for the new ones) and neutered my characters with a double turn. That new archer character can also wreck face from afar - Khorne was not happy...There was an epic melee in the middle of the board but my lack of real Rend meant that I was removing models by the handful while he took a wound or two. At least the Skulltaker killed his Warlord! Booyah!

After Action

I came last in the tourney out of 18 players. At least the games were all fairly close on points (if not body count in Game 1 and 3). In all honesty, though, I had a fun day and by the end of the tourney I at least had the mechanics down (somewhat - I was unconciously playing 40K sometimes) and was getting a handle on Battle Tactics. My opponents were fun and I tried to play in character. I am not sure that playing your first game of a system/edition should be in a tourney, but hey, its a method! I probably should have spent Saturday night reading about the rules and studying my army instead of painting, but at least they had some style.

My list was pretty much what I had. I think I would drop some of those characters and take a Priest and maybe a Demon Prince? Sever the Head is also a really tough Grand Strategy. Maybe Vendetta would be a blend of fluff and achievability? Or stick with Hold the Line like everybody else? Khorne would not be pleased...

There are some features of AOS 3rd edition that I think could do well in 40K. Some others I could do without. I am not about to switch over wholesale, but there will be a 2000 point tourney in March. Not sure if Blade of Khorne are really my thing, but we'll see.

Khorne is in a bad state right now--the Bloodthirsters are a bit overtuned but everything else (bar Bloodsecrator) is mediocre at best and just serves to back them up. Generally speaking a 2 'thirster list is more casual, with 3 being more optimized. Assuming you don't use Archaon.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Tournaments are great for getting to learn the game, as long as you let yourself learn and don't get hung up too much on victory. That sort of play environment really helps you learn some tricky stuff.

That being said... Your list kinda sucks, even compared internally to a struggling book. Sadly just how it is right now, it's Bloodthirsters or bust. Archaeon if you want to be cut-throat.

Hey - thanks! My main worry was slowing the games down - I didn't worry about figuring out all the synergies etc and just kinda played. My strategy worked - all my games got through 5 turns (except my last - I was tabled at Turn 4). Some other guys only got through two or three turns. As a regular 40K tourney player it was actually quite relaxing to be somewhat uninvested in my list-building and just focusing on playing in character! I still tried to play to the objectives, though, which almost worked in the end. But not quite enough...

I am not the expert on AOS Chaos dudes, but I believe that the various Chaos Slaves to Darkness guys can be integrated into the various Chaos God factions with Legions of Chaos but with restrictions. Slaves to Darkness units can be included in a 2 to 4 unit ratio if they share the same Mark. Blades of Khorne, Hedonites of Slaneesh, Nurgle fellows and Tzeensch all seem to have access. The Slaves to Darkness units have to have the <Mark of Chaos> bit on their warscroll to be eligible and must take the relevant Mark. There might be some warscrolls that don't have the <Mark of Chaos> keyword, but Chaos Warriors and Chaos Knights are good to go! They count against your maximums (Leaders etc) but do not help you get your minimums.

Perhaps a more seasoned Chaos Lord might weigh-in with a more precise answer?

Hmm. Am I invested enough to acquire a couple of Bloodthirsters for March?...Decisions. Nice models, but that would be my entire hobby for the coming months...I do have too many Dark Angels. We'll see! Thanks for the steer!

Any thoughts on a Demon Prince?

Yes you can take slaves to darkness units as coalition(provided they have mark of khorne). 2 units per 4(note you need to have 4 units. 3 won't be enough. No rounding). Note this is including coalition units. You can also get 1/4 from beast of chaos(again khorne). So you could have like blades of khorne unit, 2 StD and 1 BoC as army. Coalition units can't be used for general nor do they count toward battleline minimum(still are battleline though for battle tactics etc).

You would build 40k army along side though ;-)

(I realized 2 boxes of sc daemons of khorne and I have 2k pure khorne daemons for 40k too)
