The two games im most interested in for this year is WHTW3 and elden ring..

/Rant mode

Is it me or are both of these flooded with videos of early acess youtubers?

Both of these are due to be released around february. But people have been making gameplay videos for blimmin months...

I get that its marketing etc. but I have to dodge and weave to not accidentally watch any footage/spoilers. I appreciate the finished game will be slightly different but come on... Its getting ridiculous

Be careful with some of that anyway. Some video games these days only allow early access to reviewers that only shower a game with praise. I prefer to only trust friends with similar opinions of video games to play games to see if they like them and to use that as my gauge of a game being good or at least to my taste. I'll admit some games can still be good but not a game genre i have a particular taste for.

-----

So games that hopefully will come out in 2022 huh? Xenonauts 2, Starship Troopers: Terran Command, Falling Frontier (people are comparing it to The Expanse tv series in computer game form), WH40K: Space Marine 2 and Dune: Spice Wars. I feel like Xenonauts 2 will be on indefinite hold as it has been, Falling Frontier could be either great or too slow, Dune: Spice Wars may be a letdown but could be good and Space Marine 2 could go anywhere from extremely disappointing me to extremely pleasing me. Starship Troopers: Terran Command sounds like it's a blast in the demo so i have high hopes for it. Space Marine 2's trailer looks good but a nice cinematic trailer can still lead to a terrible and lackluster game. It's a shame Xcom 3 is nowhere in sight but after Chimera Squad i'm kind of worried how Xcom 3 will go.

I similar to another poster was hoping Humankind and Evil Genius 2 would be great but reviews for those are mixed and i've known quite a few to be disappointed with them.

Anyway fingers crossed big time.

@Voss & trexmeyer:

Just because an open world game is big doesn't mean it isn't hollow due to lack of interesting and different side quests. I never got Fallout 76 but man we all saw how bad that was on release.

The real benefit to Microsoft being in charge is that Bethesda has somebody to answer to, somebody who both wants a good return on investment while also not being impatient. Microsoft is willing to play the long game to make quality products. They're not going to tolerate a rushed bunch of drivel, they're not in it for a quick cash grab that leaves a destroyed franchise in its wake.

I would not be surprised if we saw a remastered Fallout New Vegas for instance, maybe with cut content getting finished and added in. It is very convenient that Microsoft owns both Bethesda and Obsidian, and they love remastering old nostalgic games and they're good at it.

I had one game freeze event where I actually had to restart and I played launch day on PC. I'm not saying they didn't screw it up on console, but the only issue I've consistently had with it over 250 hours are things like floating cigarettes. I don't think the engine they used can handle the number of objects in CP2077.

Console player - got it as a present - upset the person who gave it me as it was sooo bad.
Lying about it "running suprisingly well on consoles" is not a good start when a large proportion of your pre-orders is on Consoles.
Having far far worse AI systems than GTA3 is bad - then claiming that Police AI - or them being able to chase you/drive cars is rare in games is not great
Having a "dangerous city" ful of armed people where the only response from them to pulling a gun is to all crouch is just poor.
Lying about having a whole branching storyline based on your lifepath is bad
Lying about alot of things is bad.
Having the only FLC being a couple of guns, a car and a new outfit from J. Dickhand is poor
Sony pulling it off the store tells you what state it was in on launch for consoles.

PC seems to be ok now that the modders are doing the devs work.....

Those are valid criticisms. It's a similar situation to Fable for me where the content was overpromised and they underdelivered. At least Fable ran on everything at its release. CP2077 needed at least another year or two and even then...I don't know if the REDEngine could handle what they promised.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I'm quite looking forward to Elden Ring, as I love the From Software games and it will be interesting what GRR Martin does with the storyline. It's a shame that distasteful pro and anti Elden Ring troll wars seem to have already sprung up in the gaming social media community though, I really don't know what is wrong with people.

I'm looking forward to Blood Bowl 3, as much because it will rejuvenate the online leagues as much as anything, which have become quiet (at least on console) over recent years.

Finally - looking forward to PlayStation VR2. I loved the original machine although only played on friend's hardware. Would love to see what the new hardware, plus the processing power of the PS5, think it will really come into its own (and, for me at least, will hopefully represent enough of a valid step up in hardware to warrant me buying into this new generation).

Seen a bit of info on Elden Ring - looks pretty....is it going to be much different to the open world rpgs like Assassins Creed Oddessy which i am really enjoying at the moment.

Can computers actually do much more in terms of AI/living worlds etc than was in a game like GTA San Andres or are we at the limit?

Most open world games I have played tNPCs just walk up and down - I hear Red Dead has more but didn;t get very far into it

I'm looking forward to TWW3, Darktide, Space Marine II and I guess Starfield if it is coming out. I might pick up the new Destiny but will wait and see. Also interested to see if Haunted Chocolatier comes out this year. Weirdly the first time I have numerous warhammer games to look forward to. Clearly they've nailed down some companies to put out good games for a change.

I couldn't give a rats ass about Elden Ring, I really dislike those kinds of games. A lot of my friends like them but absolute anathema to me. I think it's the Japanese style that bugs me, just not a fan.

Nah, the issue is how much time Developers are willing to put into a open world game. We have mostly figured out relatively seamless loading so that a world feels open(IE: no loading screens traveling between different outside areas in the overworld). You could just keep going and going with the only real limit being how much storage space a computer has for the worlds assets. But the limiter here is that game developers are no longer willing to spend decades doing quality game development.

Skyrim/Fallout4/any other open world could have 10x the surface area with little extra strain on a computer. But it would have taken several more years of development. Remember that the game doesn't render the entire overworld map at once. Its only rendering the basic terrain of the furthest areas, which is very simple for a computer. It only fills in the details if you move closer, while ceasing to render what you are moving away from so it stays at a happy level. This is more obvious if you use cheats or exploits to move faster than your computer can render, allowing you to catch a glimpse of the potato graphics.

A game world can be as big as the developer is willing to take the time to fill out, though I expect consumers might be unwilling to install a game that took up many many hundreds of gb.

The bigger deal these days is making the big spaces actually interesting.

That's probably the biggest concern for Starfield. 12x Skyrims has the potential to be really boring. Like Dragon Age Inquisition levels of boring, where there are entire zones that are completely disconnected from the story, companions or anything. Kill a few animals, collect some junk, kill some unnamed enemy mobs. Sure if you do each zone, they add to the 'X hours of gametime,' but its hollow.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Mr Morden - I would recommend looking up the new PS5/Xbox Matrix game demo for 'living world' type games. It looks absolutely incredible.

Agree I would much rather have a small, well designed world, than one that is vast and devoid of anything of interest. I mean, we had that going back to Elder Scrolls Daggerfall!

I'd like to say I'm looking forward to Company of Heroes 3 but I'm not sure if their "aim for a 2022 release" is in any way reliable. I haven't paid attention to Relic in a while.

Plus, they're doing Italy and North Africa as theaters and there doesn't seem to be Italians as a faction. Might be later DLC because Sega, but it seems kind of poor not to have them, especially if it leaves allies with two factions and Axis with only one.

On the one hand, I agree with you. On the other hand, it occurs to me that the might be saving the Italians for an Italian vs. Italian DLC, which imo would be pretty cool...

I grabbed Hell Let Loose for ps5 a week ago, been hooked on it ever since. In the wake of BF2042, BF V, CoD Vanguard, and so on...this game feels like...something else, satisfying in a way most other fps games aren't. There really isn't much in the way of games like that for consoles though, in general. It really feels like i'm playing a PC game on my 65 inch tv..feels good. Plus no anime skins, battle pass or cringe cosmetics.

Hmm, I wonder if that might lead to bad press. Italians attract jokes just fine without any help. Having them as the one faction that can be played as both Allies and Axis in a game series that has traditionally strictly separated its armies into either camp may not be the best idea.

Italians would be a good fit for a Company of Heroes that doesn't add the late war heavy AT the previous games had, provided the advertised theaters are all the game is going to get. I thought the lighter vehicles in previous games lost their purpose way too early in the race to top tier units. With only light vehicles at their disposal Italians would benefit from the absence of heavy AT on most allied units and could function as a faction of their own. That's why the announcement of the game got my hopes up. I would have taken Italians and Japanese in the previous games as well (and USMC, please), but the upcoming one seems like it could be the first to actually support them as a faction.

The only other nations that could really do that, though, would be Romania, and post-fall France. For Romania, a civil-war style battle would be out of place since Romania switched sides as a whole. And the post-switch Romanian army largely fought alongside the Soviets in what is generally considered to be a minor front (unless you're Hungarian, Czech, or Slovakian, of course). There was a volunteer unit that fought for the Germans after Romania switched sides, but it was tiny and inconsequential. France and Italy, though, had units on both sides after their respective switches. And there were actually a handful of instances in the Middle East (Syria, iirc) in which Vichy French and Free French forces were on opposite sides of the battlefield, and - I believe - shooting at each other.

I doubt the RSI and Allied Italian forces ever shot at each other post-surrender. But there were Italian troops fighting on both sides - albeit in small numbers. The new Italian government formed Italian units that went under various names as the war continued. The Germans formed the RSI, largely out of Italians conscripted in their occupied territories, and prisoners taken from Italian units that had been stationed in other Axis holdings when Italy surrendered.

I'll add that if this game does well, then putting in French forces on both sides is also historically appropriate. Even ignoring the Allied excursion into Syria, the Torch landings were primarily opposed by Vichy French troops. And the Free French defense of Bir Hakeim gave the 8th Army enough time to safely withdraw after its defeat during the Gazala campaign.

Apparently the theme of 2022 is 'fear of commitment.' Except for a few delays from last year, there isn't a firm date for squat.
