So quick question, if I have five troops in a dedicated transport (Rhino), can I add another squad of five into the same transport? Or would they have to start outside the transport? What if it was an independent character and a squad of nine?

You can add as many models from as many units as you like. Up to the maximum number of models the transport can carry.

Fantastic, thanks! I have my first game since COVID started next week and I just wanted to brush up on a few rules.

Check the models' keywords also. If they match with the transport's keyword you can embark them. If they don't you can't.

Correct - some transports have rules regarding JUMPPACK TERMINATOR GRAVIS PRIMARIS PATRIARCH OGRYN WRAITHGUARD WRAITHBLADE etc size based rules - almost all have a rule about <Faction> Matching INFANTRY keywords.

Meaning Marneus Calgar cannot ride in an Imperial Fists Rhino because he's
A) Not an Imperial Fist
B) Primaris while Rhinos can't transport Primaris
C) Gravis armored which is even more restricted than Primaris.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Yeah, Wulfen for example can't be embarked in rhinos/razorback, even Space Wolves ones but only in the Stormwolf or Land Raiders.

Orks have restrictions even among units from the same klan's detachment that have nothing to do with base sizes. Specialist mobs for example can't ride in battlewagons, nauts or stompa, only in trukks since they lose the <Klan> keyword and only trukks have the replaced keyword. And only infantry units with the <Beast Snagga> keyword can ride in kill/hunta rigs.

Just to add to this, models from the same detachment can share transports, however I am pretty sure if you're running more than one detachment (definitely if they're from different factions) then you can't.

If you're running two detachments from the same faction then I believe you can still do it.

As it goes, in the new GT rules, you have to use the same faction across multiple detachments anyway.

It just depends on Keywords.

If the unit has the correct Keywords, it can embark.

If it does not, it can not.

Which is to say detachments are irrelevant. Only Keywords matter.

What the others have said. Your interpretation is the case in the Horus Heresy rules etc, so that may be the source?
