Thanks Viktor, I'll have a look at that. In the meantime, making good progress, but it's going to be tight for next weekend:

(Hope these come out OK, the light was failing somewhat.)

Ok, I need some advice from the league; I have the base paint colour down, and I’m going to be building up dry brush / stippling layers, but I could do with a wash. Any suggestions, other than about half a dozen pots of Agrax!

From the art store, buy high flow liquid acrylic pigment, flow aid, and matte medium. Those three ingredients plus a little water gets it done. I like raw umber and carbon black. The pigment gives you the color, the matte medium gives it body, and the flow aid draws it down into the recesses. I use 50/50 water and matte medium and water is a 2 oz. dropper bottle with 1 squirt of flow aid and 2-3 of pigment. I've also mixed bigger batches in a spray bottle.

Viktor has the right gen- I used Black Magic Craft's recipe for (cheap) homemade black and brown washes to use on the courtyard tiles of my fortified manor project- came out really well, I think.

Wow, That is a lot of work.
Sry was away for a bit. I kept watching just never had a good moment to reply. Almost done guys!

Wash for terrain, just dark brown house paint, "sample" size paint pots from local hardware store and water. I use empty spray bottle, or a cheap hand pump sprayer to apply it over large area.

Ever wondered why only flickering bulbs seem to be able to light up the underhive...I always wondered and have tried to add lamps and lights to my Necromunda terrain whenever possible. Now another idea I had was luminescent mushroom like plants.

Bits collected.

First step, make a base, attach some grape stems (eat the grapes and dry out the stems prior to this step), then add some mushroom tops.

Reinforce the stems with some wood glue for them to soak it up.

More to come, as I have only a couple of days to finish.

Cheers,

CB

@Meet_Cat - loving all the strong colours. It’s got a real fantasy feel to it.

@ Jadenim - it’s starting to look closer to finished. Lots of work in these big pieces. It’s funny how it makes you have to look for bigger and cost effective ways to do things we seem to do all the time on a smaller scale.

@Captain_Brown Yes! Nice idea. Now they need a suitably necromunda themed name. Sump-Shrubs or Fungus Oaks or something.

You’d be right about closer to finished, in fact I think I’m ready to call this done. Need to figure out how to take some better photos tomorrow.

Some progress. Now I found that the vast majority of the grape stems proved to be far to fragile once dried, so I was down to two. Reinforced them with some Elmer's White Glue.

First coats of paint.

Sadly, after getting them highlighted and set out to be sealed...the dog got a hold of one and I had to chase him around the yard to get it back...so completion is delayed as one has been chewed and the sealing of the other called off. I have to thank Miss Captain Brown for letting the dog out when I had asked he be kept inside while I spray anything.

Cheers,

Been busy but some quick thoughts,

@Jadnim - I really like the way its turned out. It looks like it will be a blast to play on

@captain brown - those mushrooms look great, such creative use of the grape vine as well

@Meer_Cat - so much color, and resin pour looks great

@theCrowe - those dungeon tiles look great, I really like the variants in tile pieces

Here is the latest picture I have, I am actually almost done with it, I just haven't taken any recent pictures. Just finishing up on the final details.

Better / more detailed photos, plus the replacement bridge I nearly forgot to include!

Plus some photos to illustrate how it might look in use (and show off my Tallarn of which I am rather proud! )

In “hey, this thing is almost over, I better start” news, some progress.

First, let’s do some project scope management. My goal now is to flock some hills that have been a WIP for multiple years now.

One I had covered with some plaster to seal it and add a little texture. Others are raw insulation foam.

Painted the plastered one with a PVA/water mix and then sprinkled flock over it. Once it dries I’ll shake the excess off.
Painted one of the basic hills with white craft paint. As the lettering can still be seen through, it’s going to need another coat. Also, the hot wire cutter left the sides covered with melted strings of foam, which did a number on my brush. Not that I care about it; it’s a cheep disposable one, think I got a dozen of them for a couple bucks. But worried about them in the finished product. Sealing the whole thing in plaster is probably the best solution; I should not be lazy here. Once the paint dries I’ll give it a once over and see if I should move forward with flock or just slather it with plaster like it’s friend.

Not sure I’ll finish these this weekend, but I wanted to get something done.

OK, first the dog literally grabbed one and played keep away for a bit...so that delayed the final photoshoot. However I had made the mushrooms fairly survivable (the stalks were saturated with white glue) and the one that was grabbed on had some teeth marks on some paint and one mushroom cap detached when finally retrieved. As I repaired that one, I made one more so that I could present three luminescent mushroom stalks...break through the ruins.

Those are from laundry clips that I picked up at the 100 Yen shop. I just separated and clipped them to size.

Awesome contributions, all! I'll get a showcase post up ASAP, the next cycle's theme is pretty clear, and I have some ideas for a fun ranking system.

You were a bit quicker than I expected. Here are the pictures of my finished project.

I finished one hill, but it’s pretty pathetic. Good to get it done, and hopefully I’ll finish the rest, but not something I feel is worth submitting.

Hopefully I’ll get something more substantial done in a future contest.

Jadenim: Arakasi said what I was thinking: your terrain piece looks like a photo of a real place, no suspension of belief required.

Captain Brown: High regard from me for the extremely imaginative repurposing of the last item I would have expected to be used as a 'bit' in a model build and congratulations for successfully fighting the pooch for one of 'em back (literally: the dog ate your homework) The bioluminescent glow is terrific.

Peterhausenn: Using the plastic clip as a component for your doors was inspired- I'm stealing that! The whole industrial piece is great and I really like your use of the wire stucco screen to make not only your rails, but the stairs as well- really cool! I found me some of that wire at my local thrift shop (a whole roll for $2) and was thinking of it for ladders, but now there is a whole new realm of possibilities to consider.

So I thank you three specifically, but everyone who is now and has in the past participated in these competitions: you'ns all give me ideas, teach me techniques and show me a whole new way of looking at things that keeps the hobby fresh and new for me, almost fifty years after I got into it. Thanks very much.

I'm not going to make it. Not nearly enough work done this time around. I finished the rust effects, applied some chipping medium and painted everything grey. Not super thrilled with the results. Hopefully, some washes will help. Still a long way to go and then there is all the graffiti . . .
