While the no politics rule has been a boon for a certain other forum, the realities of the world have made this rule something of a stumbling block.

In the last three days I've seen threads locked discussing announcements from GW, and the availability of minis coming from certain companies and countries. These are VERY MUCH subjects this forum is supposed to exist for the purpose of discussion of. While I have little doubt that some posters will get out of line, these are subjects that have an actual impact on this hobby, and, thus, have an impact on this site and it's members.

I would like to suggest that a single, heavily moderated, thread be opened to discuss how current affairs are effecting the hobby, and hobby news that may boarder on the political.

I believe this POST has the answer to your suggestion (and it's an answer you're most likely not going to like).

If we can't talk about the wargaming hobby because politics, then this forum no longer serves a purpose. We quite literally cannot talk about things that DIRECTLY IMPACT THE HOBBY because of this rule now. Or, should we just do away with the News section, because, my God, a studio might go out of business because of politics? People wondering about their orders, sorry, we can't tell you about it because politics. A game company issues a press release they will not ship to certain countries anymore? Can't say, politics.

These things are realities now. When the rule was made, this made sense, because Politics didn't DIRECTLY IMPACT the hobby. That argument is now the sort of flaming Ruin that I might use as a model on a war-gaming table.

This sort of thing reminds me all too much of the Diogenes Club from Anno Dracula where Charles Beauregard muses that the day that the place catches fire, everyone will sooner burn than disrupt the rule of silence in the club by yelling 'Fire'.

Fire makes its own introductions. The rule of silence will do well.

And the mods have been attempting to give leeway for news and hobby relevant stuff.

The forumites have consistently been found lacking as a group when given the chance. At this point I feel IF politics were to be reintroduced to this forum at any point it would feature a lot of extra, pent up bile. It sucks.

This is a site for miniature gaming, politics has no place here and never will. If you want a site that can do both, found your own. People on this site can’t even have civilized conversation about how integral painting is, let alone politics. The mods would spend all of their time editing that thread and get nothing accomplished.

In short leave the no politics rule whatsoever stand.

There's too many trolls and goblins on this site for that idea to work and as others have said, posters can't be civil or mature about toys so they sure won't be civil or mature about this.

Instead we should just post things like

RusModPaints will not be taking orders for the forseeable future due to ***** which have been applied because of ****. Anyone wishing to comment should go to ****.

That's still politics. Now you at the very least have a thread lock. Meaning that anyone looking for this information is unlikely to find it, given how bad the Search function around here works.

As I said, heavily moderated. But, barring that, perhaps a sticky by the mods in the news section that announces such announcements. Though I doubt even that will be considered, since that too is politics.

How many mini producers have been shuttered over this, then? Do you even know? Or care, for that matter?

And I agree that is unfortunate. However that doesn’t constitute the entire hobby, and involves factors outside of our control and whose discussion would just increase tension and the number of arguments on the site.

So, in other words, it doesn't effect YOU. But it does effect the hobbies of the posters here on this site. Artel W can't take payments from the US or Canada. Wargame Exclusive appears to be (hopefully temporarily) shut down entirely.

This DOES effect people on this site. Let me ask,at what point would it be acceptable to you for people to discuss it? When the last mini sculptors on earth are fed into the Ovens? There needs to be a point where we admit that this is no longer a reasonable position.

We probably can't mention Nazi's currently with Russia making the running with the outraged statements there. So I guess the genocides of the Holocaust are the go to replacement.

Actually, I wasn't referring to the Shoah but rather to the current deployment of mobile crematoria in Ukraine.


But, the point still stands. Would it it take the mass execution of hobbyists for you to admit that politics now plays a role in our hobby? Because that's what it sounds like you're saying.

Baron at this point we know you want politics. It's not happening, you've been pushing for it at every measure no matter what sort of issue crops up to the point where its a clear self agenda you've got, and yes it's clear Gideon meant you.

Baron just demonstrated in about 3 posts why politics is not allowed here. You are really your own worst enemy about trying to bring politics back.

There are plenty of other avenues and places to discuss it, it's not like you can't join dozens to hundreds of discords or other places. Just go there. Some of us like having spaces where there are no politics discussions.

Just my two cents, as a citizen of a country deeply affected by this war - both we and Ukrainians aren’t really in the mood for lengthy discussions on a toy soldier forum anyway. The term „westplaining” going hot in social media and mainstream media alike illustrates our perspective on an average western POV on this war quite well already and we got a brief sample of it in a „solidarity thread” right after the war started. I can think of maybe three dakkanauts who might have anything interesting to say in the topic and the rest would just be a typical dakka politics flame war from the times past. So please lock this thread already.

Nah, I already have a politics forum. But, what's going on now is, effectively, what I told the mods would happen, when this rule was first introduced. Eventually, politics would force itself on the hobby, and then what do we do? They didn't have an answer then, and I suspect they don't now, despite the fact it's increasingly an elephant in the room that we're all trying hard to pretend doesn't exist.
