Dungeon and Dragons - Onslaught

A new Dungeons & Dragons competitive board game is coming soon to WizKids. Game designer Nicholas Yu revealed on Twitter that he was a designer of a new Dungeons & Dragons-themed board game titled Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught. The game was shown off at GAMA Expo over the weekend, and will be a "competitive skirmish game" in which players battle rival adventurers and monsters in a quest for glory. The game will include 21 miniatures and feature the Harpers and Zhentarim factions from the Forgotten Realms. Interestingly, WizKids seems to be building a new game line around Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught, as it will be supported by regular content releases and in-store play and tournaments. The game will also feature a new Combat Dial Card system to keep track of stats during combat.

A formal announcement for Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught is expected soon. The game will be released in 3Q 2022.

Hate to say it but it looks like an attempt to get in on the GW arena games they churn out once in a while, like Gorechosen.

That said, not every game has to be original and this might be a hit for D&D and Wizkids.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

And there for a second I was excited that Onslaught Miniatures had picked up the D&D license for some reason!

...Wizkids.

They make usable minis, but their games are generally trash.

Let's see how long this one survives before they move on to the next shiny.

It does seem to be how Wizkids operates. I haven't played any games by the designer, but his most recent game Adventure Tactics has been very highly praised in the board game community, so at least there is that. I for one would really like a decent quick D&D skirmish game.

As far as the minis, I heard they are prepainted........and while the prepainted minis of today look much better than the original Mage Knight and D&D minis ones (especially with a quick wash on them), the material they are generally made out of is horrible, holds little detail, and ends up with all weapons being super bendy.

If the gameplay is decent and the minis don't look like total trash I would be happy to give this one a try.

I was hoping for models like the new "Frameworks" range, but prepainted...?

Just out of curiosity, how different is that from GW nowadays?

This isn't the first time such a game has occurred for the D&D brand. There was the series called "Dungeon Command" which had card driven combat and completely diceless. It also made use of their prepainted miniatures line. It was a pretty decent engine, but the line faltered after a half dozen sets were released.

Ack. I made my post before seeing yours. I dont think this would be a bad thing, if better managed. But Im not seeing the cards that were the trademark of the Dungeon Command engine, sadly.

With all due respect, but you need to check out the boardgames GW are churning out. They are not garbage. More often than not, they are quite notable for how good they are. This is why Blitz Bowl, Space marine adventures, Bladeborn, Gorechosen/combat arena, etc. are fairly well regarded in those circles.

So even without James Hewitt designing for them anymore, they are still quite relevant. Give them a shot. I think you'd be shocked, given your statement.

Yeah, that. Besides Dungeon Command, they had the D&D Miniatures Game, Chainmail, and arguably Battle Systems (and Chainmail

I like miniature agnostic systems, particularly ones that aren't abstract and will support your existing miniature collection. That pretty much leaves Song of Blades and Heroes, especially with its warband generator you can use to create your own stat blocks. SoBH also has the advantage to the customer that the game designer has shown his continued support for the game.

And I'd still like to see them put out D&D miniatures for their D&D adventures. At the least, put out a set for their starter box, much how Pathfinder has pawns for their Beginner Box.

I was a big fan of Attack Wing, back in the day.. got a whole HOST of dragons cheap.

Wonder if the miniatures will be new, or reprints from prior years

and OUCH, $140 for the base game only? Thats GW level pricing..
