I think we’re gonna see a rewrite of their whole background. But GW have said that they have retained a lot more of the dark age of technology stuff that humans lost including stuff that would now be heretical Automatically Appended Next Post: I think that the model we are seeing is not a basic trooper but sergeant or higher as he isn’t wearing a helmet. I'm gonna say a mix of Tau and Custodes the way 9th has been going. M7 WS/BS2+, S4 T5 W3 3+5++6+++, with railgun Bolters, that are 36" Assault 4 with heavy bolts for AP3 d2, and regular bolts for AP1 d1. Melee will be a Vorpal Sword for S:user, AP2 d2 "ignores Invuln". This model will cost 23 points, be a troop, and have fly. A box of 3 will cost 96 dollars.
Vorpal sword lol. A box of three plus a pair of squat suicide drones giving a 2 attacks while receiving charges before charging units attack, S6 auto hit 3 mortal wounds each

I feel so bad for the codex's that didn't get any new models. Because GW was adding a 19th!!! faction to the game. Because that is what fans wanted. MORE BLOAT PLEASE SUR!

Faction diversity is definitely the same thing as bloat. We could have gotten yet another sub-faction of space marines instead!
I'm definitely glad to see this, its definitely the kind of thing I want more of. Not just as a soft spot for squats, but also for making the universe bigger again rather than immediately jumping to SM 9.2 or a 'psychic awakening' type series of real bloat.
----
As an aside, with the way GW allocates projects, this likely took no models from anyone. Self contained, small scale army releases happen. Its not always great to be on the receiving end, but you might as well blame eldar for making tyranids small, or Chaos Knights 'stealing' release slots from Imperial Knights. You could spend all day at 'we could have had this instead of that,' for the entire span of 9th edition releases and it would be just as meaningless and uninformed.

New models are a doubled edged sword. They don't matter if GW makes them and gives them bad rules, so you don't want to run them. Or they make them really good and makes the only way to play your faction, to ditch what you bougth and rebuy your army.

So it becomes bloat becuause it's more super special rules that you have to learn to expect/counter as an opponent. For instance, I know I can't/shouldn't charge that Tau Rail Gun with my Custodes Dread, because it will eat it for lunch.
Also it becomes bloat because it's essentially one more thing on the list that has to be released before we can play with Chaos, Daemons, IG, or Knights. Like, this wouldn't be a problem if GW hadn't adopted this awful drip feed codex mentality, where they refuse to go digital, and non-9th factions are being hurt by it.

Hmm;
•"bloat" that provides me a cool new army to build/play/paint....
•"Bloat" that provides me with something I've been wanting for 6 editions/several decades....
•hopefully getting units that my existing Squats can reasonably count as....
•Looking forward to the tears & anguished wails of the weak as they scream how nu-squats are op & break the game....
SOLD.
If this edition to the game tops out your cognitive abilities? {Shrugs}
On this release pushing back Demons & Guard, etc? Why don't you pretend that that extra time will be spent "getting them right"?

I was genuinely surprised to see that they were getting a full on faction release, rather than a kill team release to test the waters followed by a full release in a few years if they did well.
But overall I like what I'm seeing so far and I may even put an army together of I can do a small elite force with them.
And on the subject of faction bloat, the solution at this point would probably be to condense all the loyalist Astartes forces (sans GK and Custodes) into two books; a generic create-your-own-chapter book and a supplement that has rules for the OG chapters and a few select datasheets for unique units. But thats an issue for a different thread, and the current course is also pretty irreversible without substantial effort and outcry and thus won't happen.

Rogue Traders are technically a full faction. The made Rogue Traders generic, but they gave them weapon options that would allow you to field any of the three existing RT models. They standardized Voidsmen as an elites choice. They have faction abilities, strats and Crusade content. They also gave the Imperial Agent Trait to Voidsmen units- one of the tiny little things they could have done to make Inquisition better but didn't.
They aren't by any means a competitive faction, but they really do work in Crusade- especially if you Legends/ Grandfather in the other Starstrider models who weren't voidsmen.

I think you're right. I can picture a dome-like helmet similar to the old exo-armor there... That said, I hope that what we are seeing is not exo-armor... I'd like to see something much more beefy to do justice for something that was the equivalent of Terminator armor. Could be a similar aesthetic though.

The whole reason MKIII replaced MKII was the crusade ran into a couple of freeholds and needed beefier armour to deal with all the tunnel fighting. Or at least that was the original justification.
