So I watched the movie on Disney +.

First, it's actually pretty good. A lot of really good jokes in it.

Second, it's a god damn sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Like it takes place in the same world moved forward in real time. Roger himself makes a small appearance and there is a bottle labeled "Dip" at one point.

Anyone else watched this?

I haven’t, but if it kind of follows up on Roger Rabbit? I’m gonna!

I watched it. I missed the dip bottle. I did think it was pretty good. The ugly Sonic bit was a treat.

20 minutes in and your recommendation is solid.

It’s not at all what I was expecting!

So... Chip and Dale in the same semi-cartoon universe as Jessica Rabbit. That... hmm. There's some meta-commentary there.

I noticed this on D+ today. I thought this was going theatrical.

I do like how one of them is 2D, and the other is 3D. That's weird meta-commentary on modern animation.

OK so it starts off strong. And just keeps on getting better and better,

It’s heavy on the pop culture references, so it may go over the head of a Kid. But, references aren’t really integral to the plot as such, just Easter eggs.

But for someone who grew up during the Rescue Rangers heyday (on a black and white telly, the sort that had a dial for changing the channel), this hit all the right spots for me,

That was surprisingly good - thanks for the recommendation!

I haven't gotten around to watching this, is it true that...

Spoiler:
the villain is an aged-up Peter Pan, referencing how Bobby Driscoll's career fell apart after Disney decided he wasn't pretty any more?

That is indeed who it is, but I couldn’t say if that’s the reference it’s going for.

Spoiler:
When Peter unrolls the thing of tools for modifying the toons. He ends up pulling out the eraser. But towards the right side of it is a bottle labeled "Dip".

This movie was funnier than it had any right to be. My wife and I were laughing most of the time, and my son laughed so hard he ran out of breath at some of the gags near the end. He wants to start watching old Disney Afternoon cartoons now.

Yeah, his backstory, especially some of the phrasing, really brought that to mind.

Ok, so.

I put it on with some friends last night as a joke and... and wow.

That was bad, guys. I feel like you've played a prank on me.

I can definitely tell why (or at least that) they opted not to go theatrical, the movie doesn't look finished. Almost every scene with '2D style' cartoon characters is a cell-shaded CGI character that I think they originally intended to animate over by hand, due to the hand full of shots where they appear to do just that. There are long dialogue sequences where the camera just focuses on Chip and Dale talking to each other, and Chip's lips don't match what he's saying.

Most of the jokes fell painfully flat, but its kept from being so bad it's good by its standard plot and a handful of really good sight gags, 'You guys cops?' and 'Ugly you-know-who' seem to be fan favourites already, but my personal favourite was:

Spoiler:
Elect Senator Butthead

It doesn't really work as a Roger Rabbit sequel, though it plays with the same ideas (most notably the movie is making a case for cartoons aging like people, straight-up ignoring that Chip and Dale were venerable Disney characters way before Rescue Rangers) but that's fine, the premise is the part that matters.

Also yeah, the villain felt really poor taste, and I imagine we'll have an evil Genie send-up to Robin Williams in a similar movie fifty years from now.

That said, if it gets kids watching some of those classic old Disney shows that's a point in its favour.

Not necessarily. That particular character in that role is becoming increasingly 'popular.' There have been several novels and at least a couple RPG adjacent things that have taken that tack.
As meta-commentary goes, there are several potential explanations (based on the history of the character and portrayals), most of which will start arguments.

So I saw it yesterday...

Pleasantly surprised!! Main plot was kinda generic, but there were some really great sight gags. Loved the joke at the end about the theme song

They didn’t bring back any of the villains actually. You only see one of them via looks at a couple episodes.

I think comparisons to Roger Rabbit are only going to overhype people . This movie isn't anywhere near that ones in terms of quality or even technical ambition. Most of the real world/animation blending is really limited to stuff you'd see on like... Blue's Clues and nothing reaching something like bumping the lamp in Roger Rabbit.

The movie itself is pretty bland and by the numbers. A serious read of it has very cringe implications but I think those reads are putting more thought into than the writers did. It's really not particularly clever; just a by the numbers "bad things happening, find the bad guy cause the police won't" kind of story.

It's worth watching closely though for just how much love is put into its love of nearly a century worth of animation and not just the likes of Disney. It's really a celebration and they definitely cut a few checks for cameos here and there just to make sure even notable rivals made the cut. That's the fun part of the film by far, and worth watching on D+, but not particularly outstanding otherwise.

I'm mixing up my franchises. Suddenly Inspector Gadget/Jeff Goldblum fanfiction wrote itself in my head, and it was... weird.
