Hi guys,

I always loved pictures of painted minis, especially big scenes, but it's always been something "other people do".

During an almost year long isolation during the pandemic, I tried a few new hobbies, including this one. I spent way too much on starting supplies and a second-hand Skaven collection (I loved those little guys from Total War: Warhammer 2 and Mordheim: City of the Damned).

I was initially discouraged by the small size of the minis and the difficulty to do (and see) details with my smallest brush (2/0) and set it all aside for a few months. I gave it a second shot later and bought a quality detail brush and a mounted magnifier/lamp and boy, what a difference!

I did 5 paint jobs so far but only the last one I'm satisfied enough to share (posting shortly).

Welcome aboard. Skaven are great and have some really nice models. Don't think your alone in taking inspiration from the video games. Regarding painting, reckon most people start with marines which are beginner friendly, but kudos for giving it another shot and getting on with. We all spend too much as well, don't feel bad about that. It's cheaper than scuba diving.

Welcome, I just joined here a few weeks ago myself. Funny you mentioned Skaven from Total War 2. I just picked it up on sale on Steam to play and started the Skaven campaign. Glad to hear the ounted magnifier/lamp helped out. I have been thinking about getting one too. These old eyes aren't getting any better. Did you take you any time to get used to using?

And I feel your pain on the spending side. My son and I just starting playing 40k and building our armies. After seeing us spending time together, my wife decided she wanted to make it a family event. So now we are slowly piecing together three armies. Tau, Ork and Necron. Can't wait to have some epic battles.

Good point. And we have much more to show for it!

Not at all, but my eyes are fine up close, that might be a factor. This is what I got https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01MRJ5HU4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Cheap for this hobby and recharges with an USB port. I love it.

That's amazing.
