UK

Welcome all to the 89th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month, the theme is We Are Legion. We're looking for rank on rank of organised, disciplined and infinitely numerous troopers, the breat and butter of armies that spill out actoss the battlefield. There's no requirement to get multiple models painted, BUT for this month, I'm going to lift the 5-model limit for those that want to put a big ol' dent in the Pile of Shame. Get yer army-painting hat on and start churning out those soldiers!

How To Enter

- [SUSPENDED FOR THIS ROUND]. You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of July and will end at midnight BST on 31st July. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

OK, the main entry is going to be the marines. The gaunts don’t really sell “legion” to me (but don’t let that stop you if you feel otherwise) I am going to see how many of the little buggers I can paint alongside the marines, and include them as a duel/diorama entry. 8 pictured here, but I picked up the combat patrol so have lots more where they came from.

@Para; you said you are lifting the 5 model rule in the flavor text, but not the list of official rules. Might want to edit that when you have a sec.

Want to see me say something stupid? Alright, here we go. I'm going to try and paint a whole Snowtrooper squad.

If I'm already putting down an unrealistic goal, I may as well get greedy and throw in the E-Web as a bonus.

I do want to get this stuff done. Whether all of it fits inside one month remains to be seen. But hey, positivity! Progress is progress.

Hey, if you miss your goal you can just blame the stormtroopers. They are notorious for missing things!

Ain't nobody getting me to badmouth Stormtroopers! It's rude!

I actually have a much more cunning plan. I've been painting a squad of Stormtroopers on the side since March that get a fifteen minute painting session two or three times a week. It takes a while, but it's a way of getting models painted. I'm no less patient with these troopers, so I'm really not bothered if the Snowtroopers don't quite make the deadline. Progress is progress.

Then I'll just not start the E-Web at all unless I have plenty of time left, suggest Big Guns Never Tire for next month's theme and get everyone to vote for that. Then I'll paint it next month. Easy!

Mostly, on my phone.

Oh, I'm in. Enforcers. More bloody enforcers. Defender squad, kitbashed from left over bits, along with the promo sergeant. They're currently primed, and I'm off to Mantic in a couple of weeks so may get even more. Huzzah !

There's also 3 heavy enforcers, 1 of whom is also a kitbash. As the rule of 5 is lifted mix of grey and black priming.

And I second big guns never tire. Cos I'm going to buy me a big flying tank.

Don’t underestimate our ability to convince them to paint a 3rd, totally unrelated project.

Or all 3!

Once you embrace the madness, anything is possible really.

It may be too late for that...

I'll be painting up these fifteen Asterian Marionettes, which have been sitting in their box ever since the first Firefight/Warpath KS!

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

Painting total as of 3/28/2024: 21 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

I have two groups for my homebrew dungeon crawl that need work;

One group is about 8 Celtos Sirens I use as succubi with a leader converted from a Wrath of Kings model.

The other group is Ral Partha Drow and some GW dwarf miners I will use as Duergar.

Nice one Josh! My eldest plays robot scum painted as SW Droids (Roger Roger). What scheme are you thinking for them?
@KC Celtos? Now there's a blast from the past! Love to see them!

I'll level with you, I was kind of dreading Legion winning the poll - I mean how do you work 'disciplined, orderly' troops into a Slaaneshi warband that's violently (literal, not figurative) individualistic, and the only miniatures I haven't converted into one-off weirdos are custom stuff from etsy or throwbacks to the 90s because I love retro? But then a couple of days ago fortune struck, in the form of a tv ad for Warhammer Imperium that got me thinking, oh what the heck, pick up issue one, it's a fiver and I can turn the marine into a fallen champion or something and probably use the Necron for random techy parts - and that made a connection in my brain to a distant memory of something that'll fit in perfectly:

Space Crusade Chaos Androids. Oh yes, bringing it back.

In the unlikely case that you don't want to do all of those (of course you do!), paint them in order of appearance. Or alphabetical order. That seems fair, right?

Yah, that sounds a lot like “both” to me.

Nostalgia requires me to say you should paint the group with the Ral Partha mins though.

At the rate that GW pump out new Primaris Lieutenant models, it's not too much of a s-t-r-e-t-c-h to describe their number as legion.

I'm in with two Primaris Lieutenants (back row, on the left):

I agree that "both" is the correct answer.

My Cyphers are in a Tron-inspired dark blue, and the Marionettes are a light blue-grey. I'm considering attempting an NMM scheme going forward, but I'll have to do some testing to see if it's viable.

OK, I have old metal Eschers for Necromuda, old metal Repentia for SoB, or a plastic Vyper for my Eldar.

To make up for numbers and similar figures, maybe the old Repentia. Not certain I could paint up 10 in a month...but we will see.

Cheers,

CB

Turned out 8 geanstealer brood with missing leg or two, and 3 warriors with missing lower half and bases.

As I'm sure you all know, Imperial spaceship crews often number in the tens of thousands. Once I've finished painting these, I'll only have 19,997 more to paint!

From left to right, we have:
Talisman: Astronaut
Rogue Trader Adventurers: Pilot Lorgar
Rogue Trader Adventurers: Ship's Officer

Back to the old Eldar... My entry is going to be this converted wraithlord, which I'll be painting as Iyanden, my reasoning is that the dead of craftworld Iyanden far outnumber the living, and so their wraith constructs are (relatively) legion. I'll be painting up a converted Iyanna Arienal to guide him as well.

I'll enter a legion from the Eastern lands of Middle-Earth, sent by the Dark Lord Sauron to destroy the kingdoms of Erebor and Dale in the north. Proof:

Here's hoping I can get all these Easterlings done. The banner guy is very much a stretch goal. The models themselves are not terribly complicated to paint to at least a good tabletop standard, so 12 of them in a month should be very doable.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Some progress... In desperate need of a proper camera and setup. Heavily doctored pic to half help with contrast and saturation

The gold and purple are proving delightfully better than expected for such a snivelling band of subordinates. Also only doing one of each mini... We may be legion, but we do not like duplicate minis
