Just finished this collection of stories thats finally brought to a conclusion (maybe?) featuring Maesa, The Autumn Prince.

Might be my all around favorite AoS tale yet. Maesa’s stories seems like its one of the longest running entries in AoS and I’ve enjoyed all of them and I’m glad Maesa got something resembling closure, where alot of AoS fiction seems to die on the vine.

It follows the titular aelf character’s obsessive quest to restore life to his deceased human wife. He has a knack for going on adventures while on this quest. He’s accompanied by a spiteful little forest spirit named Shattercap, who is trying his best to be good, despite his nature. Towards the tales end, he’s joined by a Duardin merchant of the Dispossessed and they form a friendship through their travels.

You get the sense that its pretty much an impossible task, but the Aelf is set on his mission despite the odds stacked against him and he always maintains hope that he will be successful. You also get the impression that something is… off, which adds a bit of suspense/mystery.

Pretty great action and adventure with some subtle world building capped off by a melancholy, though satisfying ending. It made me think of the classic “Guardians of the Forest” by Graham Mcneil.

I recommend!

Spoiler:
Basically, the first time Maesa set off on his quest, he almost succeeded, but was caught by Nagash. Nagash, being the guy that he is, cursed Maesa as only he knows how. He made it so that Maesa would never truly die and his wife would be out of his reach every time he almost completes his quest. Maesa would then forget everything that he did and restart the quest at his wifes grave. Thats the first twist.

The second twist is that Alarielle uses the curse to make Prince Maesa one of her finest champions. While Nagash’s curse is cruel, Alarielle uses it to give Maesa the tools to spread good wherever he goes over the centuries during every cycle of his quest. She also does it because she sees him as a reminder of the bond she used to have with the aelves.

The last twist is that Shattercap’s spiteful nature changes after this last cycle of Maesa’s and he actually becomes truly good, which upends the story immensely considering how his innate mischieviousness foils Maesa at the end of every cycle. The newly good spite chooses to leave Alarielle and goes to Maesa, who is mourning his wife like he does at the start of every cycle and offers to aid the grieving Aelf and be his friend.

I think i love the scene concerning Nagash sending his troops to a certain location just because he is such a petty little git. It just makes you love the guy even more.
