Hi all,

i hope we can make an impact on GW and persuade them to recycle sprue. This would help putting less carbon in the atmosphere and perhaps slow down climate change.

Supporting this petition https://chng.it/ybdSTh6n could make the difference.

Well their recent financial update notes that they've already installed recycling machines at their main factory. In theory this means if they can setup a sensible return system to get sprue back from local stores (acting as collection hubs) and back to their main factory then they could recycle more

I don't mean to underminde this particular petition, but there seems to be another one going on that already had some more people singing it with the same goal in mind:

Custom40k Homebrew - Alternate activation, huge customisation, support for all models from 3rd to 10th edition

Designer's Note: Hardened Veterans can be represented by any Imperial Guard models, but we've really included them to allow players to practise their skills at making a really unique and individual unit. Because of this we won't be making models to represent many of the options allowed to a Veteran squad - it's up to you to convert the models. (Imperial Guard, 3rd Edition)

But would shipping sprues back to Nottingham be a more environmentally friendly solution than recycling plastic normally?
I normally throw away plastic sprues together with plastic bottles and similar stuff, which is collected separately by the city council. As far as I know, it already gets recycled.

Yes ask for that and you will end up with models which would bio degrade, what GW would love. IMO a much better thing to do is to mix what is left of the sprues and plastic glue to form a cheaper version of gap and foult filler for GW plastic models. The rest goes in to the Fleishwolff and gets turned in to rubble, base material and weight down for infantry models.

Ah and also, sucks for people without actual GW stores. Like with everything GW would use such a change to up the prices, but for those of us living without a chain of GW stores the recycle option would not exist.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

on the forum. Obviously

Yeah, you could just recycle or reuse the sprues yourself instead of giving a corporation ideas that may be used against you.

If GW thinks they can get away with self-destroying models on the pretext of "saving the planet", they absolutely will.

It is more likely that they would just use any environmental protection scheme as a pretext to increase prices, however.

In theory GW stores have to have product delivered to them and then the shipping firm/lorry has to go back to the GW HQ to get more. So if returns and deliveries were done at the same time it shouldn't generate any more pollution than is already generated.

What if the shop is in Irland or outside of the British Isles? I have my doubts that GW has their own fleet to ferry the goods.

Overseas is another matter and likely wouldn't be viable unless there are some governemnt grants that can help facilitate it or local recycling options in those countries. That said whenever this comes up the general response is that most countries seem to have very variable local level support for recycling and even if they accept GW's style of plastic its often just going into a labelled landfill instead of actual recycling.

As Karol said, sprue-glue and grinding them up for terrain are probably the best way to recycle it at an individual level. As discussed there's probably all kinds of logistical and environmental reasons why large scale shipping/recycling isn't viable.

GW will not accept used sprues never, sorry but this is a failure attempt. They are trying to recycle some waste at their factories already and if you want more recycling you need to change the laws to benefit it and not benefit waste.

What you can do is make a large yearly event for your local(s) that everyone saves and bring in old sprues and boxes to make terrain for players, locals, events, etc... there are INSANE amount of GOOD terrain you can make this way. Just some fast google searches to find many of them. All you need some cardboard, glue, and sprue for 90% of the terrain.

Examples

Walls
Trees
Barricades
Fences
Bricks
Debris
Buildings
Bridges
Frames/Structures

You can even do this 3-4x a year at first to get more and more people hearing about it and used to it. Have templates ready to go for people to follow (Just have a couple steps 2-5 at the most and make sure everyone knows it can be dirty or ugly bc paint will make it loot good).

Just want to point out that PLA, which is commonly used for 3D printing, is not really biodegradable, but it is compostable. It won't break down if you have it on a shelf or even buried in dirt, but it does break down reasonably quickly when subject to the high heat and enzymatic reactions in an industrial composting setting.

I don't understand the problem here..?

Just recycle your own waste, and don't cede responsibility to [CORPORATION].

Reduce plastic waste?

Pre assembled miniatures negate the excess waste at source.

Problem solved.

No miniatures removes ALL waste!

Use the time you would have spent non-productively playing with toy soldiers to toil in the fields and tend to the wind turbines.

It's REDUCE Reuse Recycle. The last two parts won't work otherwise.

I work for a plastic manufacturer. Recycling is expensive, difficult, and kind of particular to each individual manufacturer. The fact that GW has their own reclaim line is pretty cool, and probably the best we can hope for at this point.
