This is a fun family favorite for small children, spouses, and anyone else that may be skeptical or not yet ready to play a real warhammer 40 k game with you

Premise: You take on the role of a runt herder, leading a crew of grot miners. The warboss has sent a trukk to collect the ore and all the runt herders are trying to out do each other to mine the most ore. Will you let your grots be lazy or really put the whip into them? But be careful, overworked grot crews can lead to mining accidents!

Players: Recommend 2-5

Play Time: 10-20 minutes.

Materials: One ork model and three grot models per player. Some D6 dice

Objective: The game lasts for five rounds. Whoever has mined the most ore at the end of five rounds wins. If there is a tie, whichever player has the most surviving grot miners between the tied players is the winner. If there is still a tie than no one is the winner. The warboss was not impressed with any of you lot!

What you can do during your turn:

You start with three grots. Each grot will successfully mine one ore on the roll of a 4+. So each round you need to decide how many grots will mine ore this round, (and how many you'll allow to take a break/be lazy).

Mining Accidents

If you roll doubles, you lose two grots. If you roll triples, you lose all three grots. Any grot you lose is removed from play and can not be used in subsequent rounds to mine. Note: Having only one grot mine negates the potential for a mining accident but its not exactly the most productive strategy!

Example: Sneaka the Runt Herder decides to work his grot miners really hard this round. He rolls three dice. He gets a 5, another 5, and a 3. So he collects two ore from the grots, but loses two of his crew. In the next round he will be limited to having only one grot mine.

Strategies

Lazy Grot: Start by only having one grot work per round. Gradually increase the number of grots you work as the game progresses toward the final round.

Whip Steady: Start by having two grots work (two dice). Increase to three or decrease to one depending on how the game progresses.

Work Fasta: The true gamblers strategy. Go full tilt from the start by having three grots work, and see what happens!

Looking at the maths I would probably tweak to roll a double, one grot pushes the other in harms way while he scrambles clear. Roll a triple and a general cave in kills all but one grot.

And/Or have it so you can buy a grot for 1 ore.

I was thinking of tweaking that myself...there have been a large number of mining accidents since the family started playing this mini-game.

In any case, if anyone actually plays this at home sometime, let me know. Would love to hear how the concept is received.

Love the idea!

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Update: We used both of these rules and it made for a better play experience.

Pretty cool!

LOL. Yes, this should be how we recruit new players.

Do you know anything about warhammer? No? Ok, then play this silly game with grots getting hit by rocks and gambling with dice. The winner gets a free drink.

Now that you are all properly buzzed, let's talk about this even more nonsensical thing called Warhammer 40,000.

Just played a few rounds of this with my son. Great fun. Super simple and you can bang through a few Roy de really quickly.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!
