Morticia and Gomez look like they've taken 20 years off Morticia and given it to Gomez. They are also clearly making him carry the whole "Actually look creepy" angle.

Considering that we also see actual blood as well its a curious setup because those elements seem like they are playing really literal and hard with the character and setting; yet the whole "school" kind of setting makes it feel more light hearted as a focus - just like the general series and films that we see with them normally.

For sure. They're definitely looking to the original cartoon here, where Gomez is decidedly rounder and uglier.

Actually maiming children on camera while showing blood seems a lot _less_ light hearted.

Netflix's treatment of school settings is often fairly brutal and over-the-top. This looks like more of the same.

I mean that the first part of the trailer feels like a brutal bloody horror setting and yet the second half feels more like going to Hogwarts for the year kind of school setting.

Yeah, and Hogwarts was a dangerous, hateful (and hate-filled) place for children. If Rowling didn't find child abuse funny, the whole series would've had an even darker tone.

Besides, the not-so-hidden implication of the trailer is the school is for monsters just like Wednesday. That's why she's going to like it there.

Yeah looking at a few of the comics (which I also wasn't aware of) he's much closer to them. I can see it being a contentious point between comic fans and those of us who grew up more with the TV show and films who gave Gomez a much smarter and different appearance.

Yeah I think the issue for people is going to be looking at this more comic accurate Gomez versus the completely irreplaceable Raul Julia.

But I mean... how would you ever do Raul Julia again? Might as well go for the comic instead of casting a pale shadow.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I hate to be the one to say it, because it makes me feel old, and really I hate feeling old, but Raul Julia died in 1994. There is an entire generation that probably doesn't even know that his version of Gomez Addams even exists, sadly. To that generation, this new Gomez may be the Gomez for them.

I really like the casting for Gomez and Morticia. Wednesday seemed like she might be able to pull it off, maybe. But I noped out the second the trailer showed the protagonist castrate a minor for laughs.

She opens the scene talking about how only she can torture her brother, which suggests that they were bullies/mean to Pugsley.

And technically after that moment the fish did all the work

... it's the Addams Family. Brutal and over-the-top is what they do. Granted, we rarely got to see much of the results of that brutality on screen but... I mean, what did you THINK Morticia meant when she said the boy was 'too old' to be EATEN ALIVE in the first movie? In the second it's clear that Wednesday fully intends to cook the camp councilors, not just burn them alive as she did with Sarah (I think that was her name).

Yeah, that's an excellent point. I was going to say something about Gomez looking... off... but perhaps it's better this way. Rather than pressure the new guy try to compete with John Aston, Tim Curry, and Raul Juila, let him redefine the character a bit to suit his own abilities.

Do bear in mind Pugsly routinely causes traffic accidents AS A JOKE. In the original TV series, this was well before crumple zones and airbags... and older cars at the time might not even feature safety glass or seatbelts.

People DIED in those accidents, believe it! Give how many times that joke was used, it's highly likely kids were involved in several of them.

This is the nature of Addams Family humor. It's not for everyone.

Who mentioned anything about it being "for laughs"? It's not like the trailer hamfistedly stuck a laugh track on that moment, and Wednesday smiling about it does fit with her general character.

And, for that matter, going by the age ranges in American High Schools... what makes you so sure he's a minor? A closed practice for a team in the top age bracket could easily mean the target of her vengeance was 18.

Given we're looking at water polo, or something like that, the torture of Pugsley could easily have been an attempted drowning - without more information, and especially given Wednesday's... unique approach to things, it is hard to say whether it is justified or not. And that's talking either her perspective, or the audience's.

They did seem surprisingly well-trained for piranhas - we see the shoal ignore at least one of the team entirely as they focus on their prey, so it isn't like she was going for mass carnage.

Yeah, that put me off as well.
It's always been implied that the Addams get up to a lot of dangerous, even deadly, stuff, but it's easier to gloss over when it's not on screen. Wednesday badly injured someone with that stunt and could've injured or killed others but apparently suffered no consequences beyond getting expelled? Just feels stupid to me.

For fear of what pointing out that well to do children can get away with in America (literally rape), I will still point out the family is very rich. So the legal system will treat them very well.

Yes, Wednesday looks and acts spot on, but time will tell. It is a sullen, shallow character that is relatively easy to portray, but I hope the scripts call for her to push those boundaries so we get a fully developed and dimensioned character and not a cartoon creation.

I agree with all that at first I was not taken with Gomez, as while relatively unfamiliar with the comic where he was a bit more goofy and creepy, so I started to warm to it a bit. However, John Astin and Raul Julia in TV and films portrayed him with an elegance that matched Morticia's beauty and as time goes on and we see more trailers, frankly to have this ultra creepy (and sorry, ugly) character matched with the beauty of Zeta-Jones is really off putting.

Looks promising,

Gomez does take a lot of getting used to, but as has been said he's much more comic strip accurate, and neither Wednesday or Pugsley were nice people at all

so as long as we consider it a HORROR comedy it should be fine

I mean, you're referencing the Addams Family movies. Its all dark jokes that are never actually realized, Its funny partially because the audience never sees it and there are no real effects or consequences. They aren't ever actually ever brutal or over-the-top except in a comedic fashion.
This is pretty much the exact opposite (it isn't a joke and the audience does see it), and I don't think it will play as well. Though that may be optimism, and the Netflix audience may well end up being rabid for a light 'snuff film' centered around a children's boarding school.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

So long as they have their own brand of charisma?

I’m sceptical. But this could work.

Sadly it’s Netflix…and I’m super dubious about Netflix for reasons I cannot adequately explain. Though one reason I can explain is any show that gets proper successful they cancel before the cast can start requiring really bloody good money.

And it’s not the penny pinching as such. God knows I’d be a happier man if studio execs took the utter awful poorly written badly conceived about as funny as a baby born with cancer show you might better known as Friends and ditched it the moment the untalented cast demanded more money. The same with Big Bang Theory.

I mean…..look at Friends. Chandler is “the funny one”. Only funny on canned laughter. No one else was laughing,

Friends was a network sitcom, not a Netflix show.

And truthfully, in my experience, it never seemed more popular than during my time in the UK at the end of the 90s (though ratings-wise, it obviously had a big audience). Original airing or syndication, the only time I saw people I knew actually sit down and watch it was in pubs in Cardiff at the end of the 90s.
