Given the replies he's getting, I'm not surprised he didn't open up about his mental health issues sooner.

He might have problems, but all he had to do one stream with people asking him was say 1 thing "I need a break" thats it, he instead ignore the people responsible for him making 100's of thousands of dollars and enabling him to just have fun streaming video games.

... people pay for the premium subscription?

Admittedly I'm worried about the legal angle. BS got away with it because it is system agnostic not only at the functional level but also at the idea level.

This Phalanx may be designed to be system agnostic, but it really gives the impression of being a 40k army builder first with any other system being an afterthought.

Why not just set up the company in a place like Cyprus, Somalia or Armenia. Cost is low, you can work from home with VPNs, most people that work bot farms do it like that here. Technicaly illegal in EU, which technicaly means Poland too, but it works just fine.

And if the company owner is Russian GW can dream about taking them to court in any of those countries. Succesfuly at least.

That's not the legal trump card people assume it is. Legally speaking, non-profit means little when it comes to copyright infringement.

If BS didn't exist I wouldn't have gotten back into playing....which entails a whole heaping pile of $$$$ GW would not have gotten from me. I was fine not playing for the previous 25yrs and the only impetus to get back into 40k was having the units/lists in one place, I could've cared less if it was GW that did it or not(as case may be).

I'll continue to use the app that offers the most versatility and ease of use...which it most certainly is NOT the Warhammer app...

Yes, but if they take money GW will be right on them instantly, being free puts them under the radar for a bit.

This is what I mean when I say feth the community. So the data authors who provided you with 40k rules for free don't want to be treated like crap anymore and go do their own thing...and you equate this with them trying to defame battle scribe to push their own thing? How fething entitled can you be? Next time just say "shut up and continue providing me with free rules" would be more honest at least.

in fact it's a surprise to me that nobody has done anything sooner considering how bad the app is.

It's a ton of effort to create and maintain an app, and there's no actual money to be made with it. Add toxic entitlement within the 40k community which would inadvertently end up in your bug reports / socials.
Hats off to the guys that try, but even in this very thread their motivations are questioned and immediately painted as 'antagonistic' and self-serving.

1. You are creating a "new battlescribe" for lack of a better term, and
2. you want to tell people to STOP giving their money to battlescribe?
3. BS is/would be your direct competitor?

Is that an accurate description of the facts?

I don't understand why you are taking an antagonistic view of this dev. This app is responsible for more people getting into 40k than most things GW has done in the last two editions. Why would you seek to supplant them?

Almost. There are two major differences between Battlescribe and Phalanx.
Firstly Phalanx will be free. No subs, no ads, no feature locked content. Just free. So there is no competition in the monetary sense. Just as we dont get paid or earn anything for creating and maintaining the data, not a single cent will be made with Phalanx.
Secondly, Phalanx will be open source so this exact scenario cannot happen again (the developers going AWOL and no updates happening to keep the app alive).

We want to stop people from paying for a service that was promised when it was switched to sub based from one time purchases and that they're NOT getting for the past years.
We didn't know what happend to the dev of the app, so we kept quiet. Now that he appeared with the iOS thing happening, it really ruffled a few feathers. Since then, he has tweeted a few things, as you all are probably aware.
Currently we're trying to reestablish contact, but Phalanx is definitely the way into the future for us.

Phalanx uses the same data as battlescribe, at least for a starter. Therefore it will be system agnostic as well - all the data out there will be available for phalanx without a hitch (at least as current plans go)

There would be more goodwill if he just didnt cash in the 120k without a word for 2 years and no update ?

I sympathize with his health issues, but moving the community toward an open-source app is the way to go going forward, a group of people shouldn't be held hostage by one's person capitalist venture.

They're not, not really. I use BS but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it disappeared. You could always just buy the books and use the official app. Alternatively, if you really can't pay up (which a lot can't... lord knows things are tight in the lare2 household), you can use wahapedia and pen and paper.

Anyway, wholly in support of Phalanx and hope it comes to fruition. Good luck with it!

First, I think a common misconception in the community needs to be cleared up.
The data most of you love (to loath) is separated from battlescribe the App.
This is for legal reasons, as the Battlescribe app is system agnostic. It can handle all kind of systems, not just 40k, but is absolutely dependant on the data provided by teams of volunteers, of which the largest, naturally, is the 40k data team.
No data author has ever received, nor will receive, a single penny for their work. We're all volunteers. I, myself, work with the data for I think 7 years now, having maintained AdMech, Dark Angels, Custodes and for a short period Imperial Knights.
The entire money you generate by viewing ads or subscriptions goes to the *cough* developer of the battlescribe app.

So far, so good, right?
Well no. The developer of said app simply.. disappeared around 2 years ago. Being part the largest and most important of his customer base, we had close ties with him to ensure that Battlescribe is able to handle the requirements that 40k generates.
Remember the Gathering Storm where you could basically take every unit in every catalogue? We do. The trauma is real to this day That also lead to the way you currently can mesh armies in the same detachments as subdetachments, the introduction of categories into battlescribe etc. etc.
He literally just disappeared from one day to the other. We know as much as everyone as to the how and why... we know him to be at least alive before because he streamed on youtube. We also knew that he was alive and kicking because you can check on the battlescribe company - and see the withdrawn funds from it over the years. Spoilers - he withdrew 120k GBP. None of our hollers, questions, requests and, at times, critical bug reports were ever replied to and are still present to this day. We trod on, making the data work with what tools we had... and I gotta say, at some points the work some of my fellow authors did was nothing short of a miracle. So he essentially was freeriding on us volunteers.

That was the situation until today.
Today, as many of you probably had heard, Apple removed the Battlescribe app from the store, unable to install it.
And lo and behold, suddenly he starts tweeting! As soon as his revenue has been threatened, he reappeared, talking about "researching new technologies". For 2 years and more, without a single word to his most active coworkers (or any other data author as I know of). This is a true slap to the face.
To add insult to injury, some of you may remember that Battlescribe in earlier days was available for a one time purchase before it was switched to subscription based to.. maintain and develop the app. Which has definitely not happenend for the past 2 years, which is the reason, I strongly suspect, that Apple has removed the Abandonware Battlescribe and not as claimed because of an expired credit card.
We'll see if his claims of being back mean more than incrementing the revision and pushing the "new" version of the app, but scepticism is warranted imo.

This is all entirely my opinion, but I am confident that many of my fellow data authors that brought you the data you use for a long, long time now are very angry at the current situation.
Please consider not subscribing to Battlescribe. You're not getting what you pay for. The subscription model, at this stage, is a sham.

Not all is lost however, and this is even less known, but because Battlescribe is closed source and none of us has access to the source code, development has begun almost 2 years now by us data authors and other volunteers to create an open source, system agnostic, multi plattform replacement for battlescribe. It is called Phalanx. It is a HUGE undertaking to emulate an app that has grown considerably over its lifespan, so progress is slow (again, entirely unpaid volunteers) and we're still quite a ways from releasing, but it is there.

Make of this information what you wish. Continue to use and support battlescribe, because we, the data authors, will continue to provide updated data for it and other apps that use our data. Because unlike certain other people, we do not abandon the community we are part of for so long.

I just want to apologize for doubting you. I learned a lot in researching this, mainly how wrong I was. I have stopped supporting them, and look forward to supporting your product in the future. Thank you for helping me understand what I was doing wrong.

I was going to make the joke about "well, there are games in the world that either make their own list-builder that works, or don't use their legal team to chase down people who are making their game easier to play, or make a game that's simple enough that you don't need a complicated tool to make list-building comprehensible...", but if considering alternatives is heresy...

Non of those companies have a practical monopoly on table top gaming though. So it is a bit like saying that Coca-Cola is an evil company, which is willing to start local wars, unlike some local mom&pop soft drink company.

And if my grandmother had wheels, she would've been a bike. Considering that Phalanx uses an open source license, as soon as they start charging you could just fork the existing public (!) code and create your own version from that.
