And then a miracle occurred...the line held. The 505th Held...

Mission: Open War (Cards agreed upon)
Objective: War of Attrition
Twist: None
Ork Army: PL 49
Guard Army: 35 (Note the Apache Helicopter was used as a Valkerie)
Guard Ruse: Dug In (With Terrain to Reflect It).

Synopsis: Good use of target priority by the Guard player (me). Plus good luck with armor saves on that Valkerie. (It finally went down but not before absorbing at least two full vollies from tank bustas and big gunz.

Orks should have brought trukks! (Busta...and my opponent will not make that mistake again!)

Final Campaign Score for GameGuard: 22 VP. (Overwhelming Victory for Guard, but didn't do a full turn by turn battle rep) Orks: 12 VP

“I just don’t like it,” Colonel Rumbold, commander of the 96th Landonian, sighs heavily into his mug of recaff while staring at the hololith displaying the latest data from the front line. “High command has ordered us to hold the defensive line from the Aaru highlands west to Helorum Township, but we’ll have to stretch our troops uncomfortably thin to cover that distance given that we’re expecting to see heretical astartes.” Rumbold hesitates for a split second before continuing “maybe even demons in force if the psykers are to be believed.”

“It’s too bad the chimeras are still out of action, otherwise we might be able to rapidly redeploy our resources to where they are needed” Major Peacock, the regiment’s second in command, chimes in before adding “What I wouldn’t give to be on the eastern defensive line, facing down orks would be a lot more straightforward than this.”

Colonel Rumbold gives his subordinate a knowing look “You won’t hear me disagreeing, but on the upside, at least we have purpose-built bunkers we can defend. From what I’ve heard, they’re mucking it in trenches and earthworks out east. Either way, these are the cards we’ve been dealt, now we just have to see things through to the end of the hand and maybe, Emperor willing, we’ll be able to take a trick or two along the way.”

“Extended metaphors aside,” Major Peacock says with a grin “between our own field testing units and the units seconded to us from the armored regiments and the artillery batteries, we won’t be short on heavy guns."

A wry smile cracks on Colonel Rumbold at the gentle prod from his second in command, “Thinking about it, we should hold our field test units in reserve here at the regimental headquarters. That will still leave more than enough heavy guns on the front line. If the heretical forces break through our lines, we can use the reserve armor to intercept before the heretics can cause too many problems behind our lines.”

Major Peacock nods in agreement, “an armored column should be fast enough to make the intercept before the enemy can get too deep.”

Colonel Rumbold takes another quick look over the plans “Well…I suppose it’s time to see how the cards land.”

Major Peacock acknowledges his commanding officer’s persistence at the joke with a smirk. “I’ll brief Commissar Grainger and then take this to the company commanders.” With that, the major heads out the door while Rumbold sits back down at his desk to finish his recaff and corral his notes.

Nice write up...man I'm feeling the dramatic tension on this. A lot's riding on this game! (Unless we get some other player's jumping in).

Looking forward to seeing the results!

While the eastern front miraculously held, the western front, stretched thin by its warp-tainted foes, collapsed and the forces of chaos surged into the breach.
~~~~
Don't have the time right now to write up a full battle report, so an abridged one it shall be. I'll try to hit the major points. The general starting fluff would probably describe the beginning of the battle (before the match started) during which the Demons managed to capture one of the bunkers.
96th Landonian Imperial Guard vs Chaos Demon Soup
1250pts with no chimeras for me this time around
Tempest of War, center wedges deployment (I forget the name offhand)
I won the roll off with a 6 after we both rolled 6s the first time around. Here's what deployment looked like:
Results of Imperial Guard Turn 1: I did a chunk of damage to the possessed and killed several blue horrors
Results of Chaos Demons Turn 1: aaaaand there goes literally 1/3 of my infantry in a single psychic phase...
Results of Imperial Guard Turn 2: I wiffed super hard on the Tank Commander rolls despite Vengence for Cadia...that squad of Possessed should have been dead (the TC loadout was Demolisher Cannon with Multimelta sponsons and a hull heavy bolter)
Results of Chaos Demons Turn 2:
The highlight of this turn was the XO (a platoon commander) trying to stop the Lord of Change from consolidating into the Tank Commander. It did not end well.
After this we decided to call the game. At the time, the score was 45 - 15 in favor of Demons and by the end of next turn the only units likely to still be standing were 5th squad off on the right side of the images.
VP for the campaign:
Demons: 28 VP
Imperial Guard: 13 VP
Brilliant Battle Report! Disaster for the Imperium!
That marks the end of another three week campaign turn and it looks like another victory for Chaos/Orks.
So we'll kick off the third and final round. Three weeks to finish this thing off. (Approximate end date 11/08/22
A third ork/chaos victory =major victory for them
A much needed Imperial Victory=minor victory for chaos/orks
The invasion is turning into a rout! The Imperium's goal has now shifted to attempting a safe and orderly evacuation from this blighted world.
Maybe we'll get some additional players for the finale. (I was also hoping to draw some of the regular youtubers in, but I guess they all got their own stuff going on)
Fluff:
While the Astra Militarum forces bravely fended off the ork onslaught, the western front completely collapsed amidst an overwhelming attack from the demons of chaos. Losses were high on both fronts, but on the Western Front, the losses were overwhelming with the 96th Landonians bearing the brunt of the casualties.
As the Western Front began to collapse, High Command started to re-evaluate the strategic situation on the ground. While the ork threat had been manageable, the chaos threat appeared to be overwhelmingly more severe than intelligence had predicted. Soon Mil Intel reached the obvious conclusion: The local resistance had been infiltrated by chaos and had passed along false intel to divert Imperial Forces away from vital battlefronts, and straight into a trap.
And so the new aim of the liberation became to effectuate an orderly evacuation of all remaining Imperial Forces from the planet. If successful, the Imperium would also be able to evacuate many of the survivors of Chigon17 that were liberated during the initial offensive. These survivors in turn would help rebuild the shattered 96th Landonian and replace other casualties from the war while preserving their remaining forces for more important battle fronts).
Of course, that all depended on a successful evacuation effort.
The retreat focused on regrouping surviving Imperial Forces around the main North South Highway, and pushing south toward the landing zones.
The orks and chaos forces meanwhile moved to intercept and destroy the retreating Imperial forces wherever they could find them. However, even as they attempted to do so, their respective forces began to come into contact with each other, leading to renewed Ork v. Chaos battles.
The Imperial commanders hoped that the renewed infighting between their rivals would give their retreating armies enough space to stage a successful evacuation.
Of course many Imperial hopes for this campaign had already been dashed...perhaps this last ditch effort would also be in vain.
Working on getting a game in with the leaked playtester codex. Should be good.
Nice. Can't wait to see it! I think the goal is to get the last game posted by the end of the current week.
So for me, it was a choice between doing something epic and cool by myself, or just quick and simple with an opponent. I went for quick and simple because games are more fun with other people.
Open War:
Objective: War of Attrition
PL: 15
Imperial Guard: Two squads of infantry, one platoon commander and a chimera with heavy flamer.
Orks: Warboss (Blood Sword) and two squads of boyz with slugga/choppas (ten per squad/mob).
We played on my mini board which is a little longer than two feet and the sides deployed six inches out from the edge.
Final Score: Orks: 14 (Wiped out the whole army). Imperial Guard 5 (Killed the warboss and nearly one squad of boyz). Overall all only 3 ork boyz and a nob survived this massacre.
Highlights: Armor of Contempt on that Chimera vs 20 waaaging boyz with choppas. It took a few turns but eventually the chimera went down, exploded and nearly everything on both sides was within range of the blast. Got to love small tables
So the ultimate VP shakedown is going to be Orks +10 over the guard since they have an overwhelming victory but I didn't do a full battle report.
I will however leave you with a picture...Blood Sword Himself. Who in another life may have been known as Gorfang Rot Something
I do love a good explosion haha. The cut off is a week from today according to the earlier post. We haven't had the chance to start our game yet, but hopefully we can get set up this week and play the match over the weekend. It'll be interesting to see how the playtest codex fairs. I'm going to try and do a detailed battle report since I figure people would be interested in the details.
Sounds good to me. I'm hoping the new rules are decent. (Although honestly, as an ork player I'm really struggling against armor of contempt and Lemon Russ' these days. So maybe guard needs buffs on the tournament scene, but on my table they are playing fine as is).
A detailed battle rep will also net the winner side an extra 5 VP which would be good because I really don't want to see a tie.
I guess if we did see a tie in VP though for this campaign round, I'd probably declare the round for the losing side in the campaign. I.E. Imperium, which would make the end result a minor victory for Orks/Chaos.
It's not easy to get a major victory. We'll see if Chaos/Orks can pull it off!
Well no risk of a tie heh. Solid chaos win. I'm writing up the batrep as we speak.
Alright sounds good.
Major Chaos/Ork Victory.
It's going to be dismal narrating that conclusion lol!
That ended up being pretty fun though. It was definitely a motivating factor to actually get some games in, get some stuff painted, make terrain etc.
Too bad it was only the two of us.
I think the format worked out pretty well though. Hopefully the next event will get a few more players and maybe some of these aloof youtubers!
Right now I am eying doing a similar event for BFG as part of the Ark of Omen Storyline (Though I guess we could also have 40K Boarding Action Games as well once that book comes out). Stay tuned!
Just finished writing up the battle report:
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/807640.page
By my estimate, I think the VP totals came out to
Chaos + 30 VP
Imperium +15 VP
Thanks for running this. I look forward to the concluding fluff!
I doubt I'll be playing any boarding action games since I'm a bit of a tank junky lol, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for the thread and read along (whether it's BFG or AoO). Hopefully more folks will jump on board.
Closing Fluff:
The Liberation of Chigon 17, which had begun with such promise, had turned into a retreat and then ultimately a rout. Despite the best efforts of the Astra Militarum, two full regiments, the 95th Landonians and the newly conscripted 505th of Weedle's Squabble were completely over run in short order as they attempted to hold back the enemy during the retreat. While the ultimate fate of these regiments remains unknown, no survivors purportedly reached the evacuation area.
The loss of these regiments led High Command to prioritize evacuating the elite Sisters of Battle units along with any critical battle field equipment. A third priority were evacuating a number of refugees deemed to be in suitably good health to serve in future combat operations.
The evacuation was a poorly executed affair which was greatly resented by the Sisters who would have preferred a glorious martyrdom on the field of battle. Nonetheless, all the void transports successfully made it to orbit unhindered and filled to the brim. Soon they departed for the warp...
After stopping at a Munitorium supply world, the transports unloaded several thousand evacuees who were assessed for assignment in the Astra Militarum. It is unknown whether they were formed into a new regiment, or assigned to reinforce other Astra Militarum regiments.
Meanwhile on the surface of Chigon 17, two might Ork Warbosses had emerged, Busta and Blood Sword.
Blood Sword maintained allegiance to the Big Mek Wilford and his burgeoning interstellar "Umpire" which had until recently only comprised a few bizarre worlds deep in wilderness space. Busta on the other hand, claimed control of a native tribe and sought to rule the planet outright on his own.
However, after an unresolved head butting contest, the two warlords agreed to krump the chaos demons and astartes first.
For indeed the forces of Chaos had grown mighty here... However the Dark Lords of Chaos had other plans and Chigon 17 was not a priority for their elite heretic astartes. The heretic marines withdrew into the warp, leaving the twisted lands of Chigon 17 to the whims and deprivations of the warp demons and their ork adversaries.
Somewhere in the void, Abaddon saw the work of his followers and was pleased...
