As per the title, LGT is on the 30/09-02/10. Are any dakkaites attending?

I might be there.

Will be in London that week, trying to find a way to stretch the trip for a few days.

London

First I've heard of this years one. Popped my head into the infamous one at the Olympic Stadium and it put me off tournaments for good.

Would have considered giving this a go but it seems it's too late to get involved with any of the 40k events.

On a random, I have a ticket for the AoS lgt and can't attend... list submission deadline has passed, but if anyone might want a ticket, chuck me a dm. I'll check back in a day or 2 and see if there's any takers

Will probably be some kind of penalty for signing up/submitting late... but its a cool event if anyone wants to go

Real good job lol.

His lifetime ban didn't even last until the next LGT.

LGT comes across as quite janky.

Janky, how so?

It is interesting because despite being called the London Grand Tournament it is very much a European Grant Tournament. So many names I didn't recognise doing well.

London itself has somewhere between 200,000 to 400,000 French people. And some politicians have tried calling it France's "sixth city".

Flights from several European capitals are quick and plentiful.

And it is slightly faster to get to London from Paris by train than it is to get to London from Manchester by train!

Depends on the system.

The 40k event usually runs into some jank problems, but everything else is usually pretty smooth.

The blog post on The Fifth Trooper about the Legion event is pretty uninspiring.

Judges who don't play Legion, bare tables, not enough tables for the people who showed up, and Facebook drama of the judges attacking people who criticized the table quality.

Edit.

Yeah, LGT is usually a dumpster fire that should be avoided tbh.....

Terrible tables/terrain, rude organisers, cheaters and it just generally leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Quick plug for Selwg at the same venue Sunday 16th October at the Lee Valley Spots Centre.

Personally I think getting there sucks.

Can confirm all these things. Surprised he did not also say that the prize support was also missing as it had apparently been sent to a different part of the same umbrella company, probably the poorest run event I have been to but still had a blast and had some great games. Including loosing to the author of that piece...

Hah, the Fifth Trooper crew have been on a roll recently in Legion tournaments. What list did you run, if you don't mind me asking?

Should have stuck with my Maul list however, though my AAT loved the open tables!

Ugh what a horrible looking boards.

Clear case of organizer being more interested in getting it big rather than getting it good. Profits for themselves.

I can imagine your tank was in heaven with all those open firelanes . My buddy struggled with his the last time he used it, deployed it in a spot where it spent more time moving to try for a shot instead of shooting for the first half of the game.

Do you find it a necessity against all the Pykes we are seeing now? And, read the write-up about your game, some real bad luck on those Suppression removal rolls though.

Yeah... we are real lucky in the States that we have so many good tables for Legion at a lot of tournaments. A bunch of the U.S. based Legion podcast groups have enough tables ready to go to run a tournament themselves, and I think it is Legion 99 that darn near has enough tables for a 60 person event... and that is even after they donated some to one of the larger event circuits here.

Having groups willing and able to help is a great resource for any game. The problem here seems to be that this was also the case at the LGT, but someone thought keeping the corporate sponsors happy was more important than giving the players a good experience, at least according to the info in the blog.

It seems like the LGT is constantly having problems of some kind, from the terrain debacle at the first one, to the cheating scandal that was handled really poorly, to this account. I'm really not sure how it's survived as long as it has.

Winning big tournament is considered prestigious so people rush in regardless of quality to win big name to get name for themselves.

Makes more sense in games like poker though where winning actually matters something.

I am not sure what went on with the AMG tournament. It was announced not long before the event that Organized Play Events (https://www.organizedplay.events/) were taking over the running of them. How and why was never mentioned though the previous host was clearly unimpressed (Elysium Wargames). Researching the company, it appears to be run solely by someone called Thomas Roberts who used to run Cardex.co.uk which was struck off the companies house register though still appears to be active. What experience they/he has at running tournaments I am not sure though OPE seems to have formed some sort of partnership with Asmodee (at least all major X Wing events are being run by them).
If they have any involvement in the GW games I do not know, though as terrain was shared by kill team and Legion it seems possible?

I originally took it to counter speeders and force users but it does handle Pykes quite nicely. As I was running it I was able to get an aimed seven dice shot five turns out of six in nearly every game (plus the Orbital Strike) which is enough to kill most dodge reliant units in 2 turns shooting.

Suppression was more pivotal in that game than any other I think I have played (which is part of why I dont run Cad's 2 pip), having two units panic in one match was brutal. Though if my white dice luck was evened out between rallying and saves I think Cad should have been dead before panicking!
