Subject: TT Combat Paint and Washes set Kickstarter
Troll Trader, (TT Combat) who do some interesting things (MDF Terrain, they picked up and expanded a few games that were dying, have a second hand site for miniatures) is bringing out their own paint line.
I'm baffled by the stream of new paint ranges in recent times, it seems like a very specific and very well served market to try and break in to and there's not exactly anything much you can offer over the dozen or so established ranges!? Vallejo have something like over 300 colours across their lines.
Maybe the profit margins are just that appealing.

I asked on stream, they said they are not the same/copies of secret weapon stuff?
Reaper made Secret Weapon paints and the formulations were done by Annie Forester before she left Reaper so TTC would have to go through them if they wanted those paints.

I just can't see what unique selling point TT paints would offer.
Unless they are the cheapest at retail I really can't see them being a fantastic success, everybody who's not new to the hobby already has their favourite paint manufacterer(s).

I think this is to really sell to people buying into their KSer campaigns. A lot of people use Army painter sets for new painters to have something that entices people that want to get into the hobby but not sure what else to buy. TTC does a lot of Kickstarters so now they can add in paints to those. I don't really see these for people that already have been in the hobby for a while.
That being said I'm always interested in paint lines with interesting color pallets including their boxed sets for painting certain things (triads or similar stuff) but there's really not much of that going on here and a lot of the colors are pretty similar across all the lines.

I’d probably buy some of the Dropfleet-named colors at retail just to have. I might even use some of them on my spaceships, although they are way, wayyyyy too late to market for most players. I’m certainly not going to give up my Turbodork PHR and Scourge schemes.
It is odd that they're not selling this as studio colors for their games as well, like P3 paints. There's a better case made for a small line existing so people can easily replicate official paint schemes but that's not even mentioned. Just "you can paint anything" if you mix and then a bunch of MDF painting supplies.

I could see something worthwhile if they were designed to go on unprimed MDF or something. But this is just regular old paint, at a not particularly appealing price, to be delivered in 7 months or so.

Those already exist and are called Enamul paints. Acrylic will work on some MDF without priming but it depends on the fiberboard to be honest.

I like how they have two different types of caps shown on the paint pots in the Kickstarter...

TT have sold their own coloured spray primers for MDF for a while. It's a bit weird that they aren't just dumping the spray colours into bottles as a starting point:
We couldn't colour match all the sprays in the first wave of paints but plan to match more down the line as the range expands.

No. The last update from Justin was end of August and pretty much he's officially suing TTC and that one of TTC's employees gave Justin some evidence against TTC's claims. You can read up on it in the SWM KS comments and no reason to really derail this thread too much about it.

The paints will retail at £2.50 a bottle, compared to GW's £4.95~ a bottle.
The kickstarter "all in" is £1.38 a bottle, and the "Early Bird" is £1.30 a bottle

I counted 3 Oranges in that paint set... that is quite a lot. In my 30+ years of putting paint onto models I rank orange as the least used colour, so seeing not one, but 3 in the set seems a bit odd.
Anyone here get a lot of use out of orange?

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

I feel like the paint market is oversaturated. Just near me you can pick up proacryl, AK, vallejo, citadel and army painter.
And with soany good paints out there, and being more available than from one site, why bother with these?

Does that just tell us that paint is a super easy money maker? Good margins? Brand recognition? What's the strategy behind paint lines lately. Very interesting! Glad to see competition tho - theoretically that will lead us to seeing quick evolution along the lines of contrast paint and other cool things as folks try to make the best gunk. If I had more faith in capitalism that is.

TT is awesome, they have a lot of really cool stuff. Too bad they are in UK, i looked at doing an order with them in the past but the shipping was horrid. I don't know of any USA places that carry their stuff. But it looks like they make quality products from peoples reviews.

Free shipping over 100 pounds is something I have found useful.
For Dropfleet, there is Kick-Ass Mail Order, and sometimes Game Kastle. The Facebook trade group is a good place to find deals.
