The cartoon's based on a 10-year old novel (Yarrick: Chains of Golgotha), and Yarrick is one of the iconic characters of the setting (and we already assumed he was dead when the timeline jumped 200+ years).

When did the timeline jump 200 years? Last I remembered between 7th and 8th edition there was a roughly 100 year time skip, that then got retconned to a mere 12 years for reasons. I'll admit though, I don't have full knowledge of the fluff since it can go all over the place.

As a wild sidenote, I'm really hoping it's Snikrot who did the deed.
If you've not read the Ork codex, he's laid claim to Armageddon now. Calls Ghazghkull a coward even for leaving. Some of the Orks and Ork Hunters have started working together to deal with the daemonic incursions associated with Angron's invasion, and Snikrot has been slaying those Orks.

That's it - during the Dark Imperium novels. I might be misremembering how long the original jump was.

I think I asked this before and the majority response was that he is dead but it didn’t matter previously because 40K was a setting and not happening in a causal timeline where everyone you can buy off the shelves is alive and operating today.
So the heroes in the codexes of old could have been alive at any point in the 41st millennium.
It now GW has made 40K a proper timelined sorry/game and all characters are operating in the time of the great rift.
Also they clearly wanted a super hero character for AM and thought that buffing yarrick like they did Ghaz wouldn’t work

I think its more that GW has retired a bunch of finecast models in one big go and hasn't replaced them so they've removed some characters as they were often metal/finecast.

I rewatched the video reveal and that particular skull has three service studs on the forehead so it's more likely a Marine.
I'd still be bummed if they perma-killed Yarrick in a setting where Primarchs can suddenly come back to life
Old Seb Yarrick was one of my favorite characters back when I got into the hobby during 2nd ed.

Which kind of sucks since we soon end up with a comic book/Loony Tunes style thing where Jean Grey can't be here this week on account of being dead but don't worry she'll pop back up in time for the Summer Crossover.
Not very Grim Dark.
I'd rather prefer a story where some Imperial propagandist is surgically altering and brain washing random Commissars into thinking they're Yarrick.

If he is axed it won’t likely be because he’s “dead” in lore but because GW didn’t want to keep his finecast model. Which is weird, because they didn’t axe finecast options for later codexes after their range rotation policy came in.
Which also begs the question of why axe anything when they can range rotate it.

Last we really saw of Yarrick he was going off with the Black Templars to pursue Ghazghull, so it wouldn't make a huge amount of sense for him to end up back on Armageddon.
He cannot die for the same reason ork tech works.....because they are all latent psykers and if they believe it strong enough it is so...and they believe Yarrick cannot be killed.....so no matter how often he "dies" he will be back like a perpetual.
That's lore bit players keep misunderstanding.
No it doesn't work that way. In canon ad mech priest speculation is only source for that level.
No empty box doesn't shoot bullets by belief. That misbelief has to die.

Indeed, the Jump Lord is a prime example!
As is the Forgeshrine for the IK even though they’re still selling it. GS’s fragdrill is also gone. On the flip side the Tau gunwall is rotated, they buffer the webway gate and have orks a second fortification.
It’s not clear at all.

That they didn't drop him earlier is daft when they felt no compunction ditching so many other interesting characters like Bastonne.
Yarrick being the leader of the Imperial Guard defenders of Hades Hive, was notable, yes... But like many other characters, he was likely envisaged as a short term hero who would eventually be forgotten by upcoming later heroes...
By this point he was more or less a sad, overused meme...
Now the turn of events could be summarized by:
Gazzy vs Yarry, Armageddon II, result Yarry wins.
Gazzy vs Yarry, Armageddon III, result Yarry wins again.
Gazzy leaves to find more glory, Yarry chases him.
Gazzy meets Raggy, and loses his head, only for Dokky to staple it back on.
After meeting Raggy, Gazzy gets an upgrade, making Yarry a sad joke.
Yarry meets Angry and predictably loses.
Raggy likely becomes the new #1 rival for Gazzy.
If Gazzy goes looking for Angry, he won't win...

Continue any hero story long enough and it turns into a comic book, continue it longer it turns into Loony Tunes or Itchy and Scratchy.
Sooner or later you have to end things.

Any longer still and it turns into Supernatural
That said I think it also greatly depends on the character. I think one problem with a lot of modern fantasy and sci fi is the need to change the world/universe through the events. Then after you resolve the first adventure the next has to be even more epic. The result of which is that things very quickly get out of hand and can end up becoming rather silly.
Meanwhile a character pair like Gotrek and Felix or the old Conan Comics can keep going for utterly ages because most of the adventures are important at the local scale, but ultimately very small scale for most of the world and setting. Characters are swept along, major events happen in the world but they aren't always the cause and sometimes they are just the mercenary brought along for the fight. So you can keep dipping back into them over and over again and things don't get out of hand and don't get silly. Sure they are still amazing at surviving so many fights and adventures, but its not the same as saving the kingdom one week; the planet the next; the galaxy the week after and finally the universe and all creation by the end of the month.

Ending Yarrick's story isn't the problem.
Ending Yarrick's story as a relative sidenote because GW wants to drop the metal model is the problem.
Ending Yarrick's story as a relative sidenote because GW wants to drop the metal model, despite Tycho's death not only not resulting in his model being removed, but his rules actually doubling, is even more of a problem.

So they just sort of posted an answer on Warhammer Community today.
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2022/11/15/warhammer-community-investigates-could-commissar-yarrick-actually-be-dead/
Which boils down to...don't worry we'll work him back into the plot when and if we feel like it.
So for now everyone can just make up their own answer.
Personally I like my son's answer. He explained that Yarrick was killed by a hair squig that landed on his neck and bit him...as portrayed in the shootas blood and teef comic.
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2022/10/25/shootas-blood-teef-da-offishul-prequel-part-2/#comictop
So in my house, that's the answer we're going with...death by hair squig.
