I wasn't sure where to put this. Fantasy or Historicals both work for my purpose.

I recently purchased Victrix Vikings, for those sweet 60 models, and I need help deciding on a wargame to use them in. I know Ravenfeast is the one Victrix suggests, and people like Saga, but my interests seem to lie more in the Blood and Plunder area. Is there a wargame where you can use Vikings, both on foot, and on a ship?

Hail Caesar is one I am looking at, and I'm not sure if Osprey has rules for what I'm looking for. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Already, members of our growing cult are using the grace of the Omnissiah – the true Omnissiah, not Terra’s false prophet – to harness the might of the warp. Geller fields, warp missiles, void shields, all these things you are familiar with. But their underlying principles can be turned to so much more. Blood&Plunder is going to have a medieval version relatively soon, it's called Blood&Crowns. It's going to be focused on the Hundred Years War (because of course it is), but I imagine it will be possible to count medieval knights as vikings, and it's still most likely going to have naval combat and boarding. I was also told by a person who was present on one of their streams that they are actually going to make proper viking-themed addon in the future, but I don't know any details, and it is surely coming only after they're done with B&C and B&S.

And Hail Caesar is a mass battle wargame with hundreds of miniatures on large bases, do they have naval battles too? Never heard of that.

I don't know if Hail Caesar has naval battles, but it has a viking ship in a viking collection for Hail Caesar. Blood and Crowns would work for me. I don't mind a bit of proxying. I might just play Blood and Plunder for now, so i have a grasp of it for later.

Thank you.

I have an suggestion, but OP cant use the models allready bought so it is prolly not what he/she is after, but it falls whitin the game category that OP asks for.

allso it is going to be a kickstarter product soon, and that might allso not fall whitin OP realm of reason.

No reason OP couldn't use a different scale with the rules, but not sure that is what he is looking for. This seems to focus on ship crews fighting on water. I suspect OP wants the ability to handle raids on land as well.

That looks pretty cool. Depending on the price, I might get that as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well, I am not an expert on the subject but most Viking Naval battles were just ships lashed together which were then basically the same as land battles.

https://weaponsandwarfare.com/2020/07/01/sea-battles-of-the-vikings/

The sea battles of the Vikings were fought according to the same principles as battles on land. Each side roped most of their ships together side by side to make a platform on which to form a shield wall. The attackers tried to storm this platform, as e. g. in the battles of Hafrsfjord in 872, Svöldr in 1000 and Nissa in 1062. Ship after ship was taken and then detached from the formation to drift away. Both fleets used to keep some ships outside the formation to manoeuver; these were used to attack the enemy by going alongside and boarding, in a hailstorm of arrows, stones and spears from both sides. If the defenders succeeded in killing the attacking rowers, or if the oars of the attacking ship were broken, the attack often failed through inability to manoeuver. However, the elements of a real naval battle of the Classical age – outmanoeuvering, ramming, forcing the opponent to sail against the wind, or the use of catapults – were unknown among the Vikings. Most sea battles took place in quiet coastal waters or river mouths, where there was no space for such tactics.

Since we're here, Wargames Illustrated january will have a preview of Thalassa, a trireme era game that looks to be the exact same concept as Fjord Serpents but a bit more accessible (British made vs Australian made). And comes with 3d printable modular islands/shorelines.

I had my eye on Fjord Serpents, had to google Thalassa though, that looks fantastic.

Curious whether you found rules for your project? You were not clear whether you were looking for skirmish rules, or mass combat rules. Would love to see photos of the ships and the miniatures! Cheers!
