So I'm attempting to mix my own washes. I'm using Liquitex Matte Medium, distilled/deionised water and FW Daler Rowney acrylic ink (Burnt Umber). Roughly 49% of both the medium and the water with 2% FW ink in there (approx in general).

The wash goes on really well and I'm dead happy with the shading that it gives. There's only one issue and it comes out rather glossy which shouldn't happen with a Matte Medium. Can anybody possibly explain why this is? I've even tried putting 1 drop of the ink into lahmian medium and I'm getting the same result.

Thanks folks

Artists inks are very glossy. The matte medium is probably just being overpowered by the other components. But does it matter? Just apply a matte varnish afterwards?

Indeed, you are correct. I apply a matte varnish after all of my miniatures are finished anyway, I just find it quite distracting to be honest. It also doesn't give the model it's 'true' look while you're working on it. I was just wondering if there was a way to knock it back, that's all

Thanks for the reply

Fair enough. I have the same issue when I use artists inks to saturate my colours. You could try upping the matte medium if you really wished to solve it at that specific point. Personally I wouldn't think it worth the effort really. You could always do a matte varnish pass after applying the wash, before the next paint layers
