I'm looking at a Rustoleum primer that's just the shade of grey I've been looking for (not too dark, not too light) but it is a self-etching primer and I have no experience with this type of primer. Has anyone had any experience with self-etching primers on HIPS? Thanks.

If it's bog standard rustoleum primer, I've used that before with no issues. It's likely that the etching element requires a chemical reaction with a metal surface and has no effect on plastic.

I dunno about rustoleum, but I've tried other etch primers and they're fine as long as they're applied lightly, if they're applied too heavy they'll melt the plastic.
