So, the good news is I was able to trade my Christmas gifts for the Chaos Space Marines Combat Patrol and the Lord Discordant on Helstalker. As an old DOW player, I see some very nice familiar faces in the Hellbrute, the Havocs, and the Legionaires! I have 'some' ideas for this army, but I'd like to take some suggestions.

.I'm planning on going Undivided, perhaps either Black Legion, Word Bearers, or even my own warband the "Warp Jotunn", (with standard rules but a nice blue ice themed paint scheme.)

.I am planning on using both Chaos Daemons (I got the latest 9th daemons codex) and CSM.

.While Undivided, I have about one squad of bloodletters. I need to check up on the detachment rules.

I am planning on getting a daemon engine or two, but I like to rely on infantry.

.I have some leftover plague marines from the good old Dark Imperium boxset, I may want to add them in somewhere.

This won't be a very meta army, but one I get to use from scratch anything I have on hand and can buy. I was thinking either Black Legion or Word Bearers, (or my OC warband).

Suggestions? This army will take a while in points, but hopefully I can work on it here and there and make it truly unique. I could have gone loyalist marines, but I've been a fan of Chaos ever since Dark Crusade and DOW2.

For HQ's I have the disco lord, and the Dark Apostle. (I may get a psyker in the future.)

Lord Discordant with Flames of Spite and all his attacks are phenomenal on paper…. But that 120x90 base is a b**** to move up field and around terrain. He also doesn’t have smokescreen to mitigate oncoming fire and let me tell you… people LOVE shooting him. It’s annoying as hell, mine is so beautifully painted 😄

Hide him with Look Out Sir, then?
He’s only 9 wounds.

As for your army choice, just be reading about the current shake ups happening in the competitive world. Emperor’s Children and Creations of Bile most competitive right now I think but CoB is getting a nerf, the new Grand Tournament will be coming out soon too which may dictate the direction you go. I myself run Black Legion… nice flexibility!

Yeah that’s about what you’ve got to do. But you want him in the thick of it / want to use his maximum movement of 12”, but only raptors / talons and bikes have a 12 inch move, and they may not be what you want. He’s just a pain to keep safe sometime that’s all.

Maulerfiends go nicely with a Disco Lord.
Barely slows him down, provides protection as long as they live, and benefit from his targeted buff.

Maulerfiends would certainly be a good pick. Possessed are a fun unit for just about any force.

You may also consider some Cultists for chaff and screening, and if you can get your hands on one, a Venomcrawler is a good pick too, especially if you add in a Master of Possessions.

Glad to hear it worked out for you.

You could consider 1-2 units of traitorguardsmen instead of cultists for chaff, bit more expensive but can take some dangerous equipment.

Terminators are also very good for buffstacking, but they will get a points hike soon.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

You should think on doing this one because it attracts less d-bags that told you something is painted wrong, you can use any legion rules without someone sneering it's the 'wrong' one, and frankly, painting what you designed tends to often be more fun and lets you be more creative. Unless you really like Legion X special characters but even then, nothing stops you from putting a different head/helmet on Bile or Abby and just say they are your warband apothecary/terminator lord. Ditto with daemons, don't get the impression you need to paint them 100% 'official' scheme, if you have one you like more just do it.

Other than that, decide on theme you like, and start working on it. Painting/converting minis is more fun and goes faster if it's something you, not someone else wants, which is especially important if you're just beginning. Also, mistakes happen, don't be discouraged, keep painting, you'll get better with every model you do.

I have yet to see a chaos army of any kind without a terminator squad with the rune.

Masters of possessions and possessed are good too. But who knows, maybe GW will destroy the army next month. In general buying models, and more so entire armies, at the end of an edition, pre CA is very risky business.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

I would say grab whatever MK you like from HH marines and you can mix and match from leftovers in the CSM kits to max out the collection.
