First game in and my feelings at least are more positive than last one I had with. Lack of bounty hunter alone is refreshing change of pace. New scenarios have quite a few interesting looking ones and the no reserve/deep strike rules were removed(no teleport scenario is still in but that rule got removed). More variety at objective placing with 1/8 from edge rather than 1/4 being more used and even on the very edge. So mobile forces are going to be more valuable.

Battle tactics are getting trickier and trickier to score so 5/5 is going to be harder to score. Especially if you play in enviroment like common here with battletome ones being banned.

And again no bounty hunter!

Jaws of gallet also rather encourages you to go second which is nice. I actually twice refused double in my first go. I have refused to take double before but refusing to take double twice in a row is something I HAVEN'T done before.

Can't wait to play more with this.

And no bounty hunter!!!

I agree that no bounty hunters is a big deal; it was a significant drag on my enjoyment. While I am (extremely) happy that the devs understand the importance of counterbalancing the buffs handed to the focus of the season, bounty hunters was too much.

100% agree. I'm excited for the new book.

Looking forward to testing it out. Haven't gotten too many games in but my group is starting a league, so we'll see!

Overall I'm not a huge fan of the format GW is going with. I'd prefer more stability rather than big changes to how units behave, but hey, whatever shakes it up and gets people playing.

Otoh if changes would be minor paying 40e half a year would suck even more

For me it is all in two aspects:
-Are the changes fun?
-Were the changes needed?

Changes appear fun - giving your foot heroes more purpose and opening up new strategies
Changes likely weren't needed - it's changes for the sake of changing the strategy, so if it's needed or not is dependent upon how bored with the game you were before.

The main reasons I can see GW trying this system are twofold:

A. They think that players get bored of stale meta and they are trying a new way to shake up the competitive scene so it doesn't get stale.
B. They are using this as a testbed of different rules to see what's popular, what gets people excited to play, and what sells more models.

I haven't got to play the new GHB yet, I've been in a general wargaming slump and haven't had the energy to play.

However, one positive aspect for me is it seems there are more battleplans where the objectives are spread out on different spots of the table.

I loathed how nearly every objective was central on the table, and encouraged dumb monstermashing and mobility only really used to get off alpha strikes on your enemy.

My favorite mission from the last GHB was Silksteel Nests, which at least in other circles I was surprised to find it was disliked.

Bounty hunter needed to die. It restricted list building way too much.

+10 this

Also like the silksteel nest myself.

Our's for taking and in particular position over power seems fun.

And even harder BT's make mobility bigger help on those as well. Particularly if you play with battletome ones banned(as those aren't even close to equal between books)

Having now tried 5/6 of new scenarios twist and turns is pretty fun.

Though why it's fun is probably why tournament try hards hate it

Position over power also interesting. Too bad opponent resigned after 2 rounds. I was doing good on kill count(took out 5 major units for loss of 1 unit of screen) but vp wise due to scenario feels it was lot harder for me.

Need to 3d print myself some half a circle/quarter a circle markers though as those are first time needed in this GHB

I have definitely found it to be far more fun than the last, enough to forgive the money-grab update after 6 months. Points changes have been a mix but generally good, I like that the 5-point changes turned out to just be them going back to rounding to the nearest 10. The flat out 'no targeting with missile weapons, period' for Galletian Champs within 1" of ANY battleline is a bit gimmicky IMO, but that makes it perfect for a seasonal benefit. Would want to see it dialed back for a permanent rule but for a season I like it, creates a fun dynamic.

Played final scenario from new ones, ours for taking. That one can lead to rather big vp scores if you can make a move to opponent home objective early. Ended up 36-13. Ability to teleport or move fast very valuable here as objectives quite far apart from each other.

Common feeling here is battle tactics LOT harder to score. Which might mean going first is more valuable if you can deny objectives from opponent doing so.

First turn being less penalizing would be nice.

It does feel like a lot of these things are testbeds to figure out what people like in terms of rules for eventual 4th edition. What they can turn up, what they can add on for crunch, what they need to keep away from.

People don't get too angry because you can always just play the previous missions while you wait for the next pack, which isn't usually too long a wait.

It's not a bad system, as long as they ARE listening to community feedback and not just blindly throwing darts at a wall that doesn't even have a target on it.

It depends. People have all kinds of different opinions on what makes the game fun. Who are they listening to? What sort of opinion do they value more? If they're even considering these things at all.

I lean more towards unintended incompetence more than anything.

First Season of 3rd Edition was all about big dumb stupid monsters. Because of the rules, battle tactics and objective placement.

Second Season was... all about big dumb stupid monsters and occassionally battlelines. But the mechanics and battle tactics made taking Galletian Veterans a risk, as they'd get devastated by Bounty Hunters, and give up Battle Tactics. This is despite GW's intended claim of making Season 2 focused on Infantry. Monsters were still on top from what I saw, with only some niche infantry making a splash.

I give the AoS devs more credit. Some of it is from recent WD articles where they've talked about the process--there seems to be a good amount of genuine passion there, and a healthy dose of optimism that I'm glad they have (counteracts our pessimism). But more than that it is the results; 3rd has been more balanced* and more fun (in my community, at least) than 2nd. And 2nd was not at all a bad time for AoS to begin with. The core rules updates had a few rough patches, but bar reinforcement points they were all addressed quickly and in an intelligent way.

The first GHB was IMO really good. We had a solid year of fun gameplay where both armies within the theme and armies outside it were viable against each other. Behemoths could earn extra VP, but they also gave up VP when killed, while hunters in the heartlands offered easy counter play.

And I think the season 1 GHB could have been really good. This is where I see them as having fallen through, opting to wait for the season 2 book to make changes instead of a three-week eratta. This is a shame because to my eyes the only thing really wrong with it was Bounty Hunters. I think an eratta making it so only GVets could be in that battalion (thus making it vulnerable to itself) wouldn't have been perfect but it would have saved the season. There was a decent balance of GVet advantage and counter-play otherwise.

*Balance is of course a highly relative term when speaking Warhammer.

Another issue were no deep strike/reserve scenarios. Bit less of issue as one could avoid those but 25% scenarios(the sudden death also ignored generally as plays havoc for tiebreakers) out is bit pity.

But was surprised it wasn't errataed.

At least new battalions aren't as busted. Sharpshooter is 3 drops to get what used to be norm so even with increased importance of gc less potential to bust game especially as it increases drops(so in essence you are worse off still than before)

One worry is gc's in melee making shooters 100% unable to shoot anybody but let's see how big issue. Not many gc on sufficiently big base

The last GHB turned my AOS community off so we made our own season. Not sure if we will go back.

I was against going our own way when we were discussing this around September as the discontent over the Galletian Veterans/Bounty Hunters book took shape. I figured we should stick to the mainstream book to make it easier for outsiders to join our games. I also like comparing my own experience with the on-line wider AOS world and this is less relevant if we go our own way. I was in the clear minority, though, and a couple of players came up with a player pack of our own. We tested it over a couple of weeks before using it at a tournament and for a six-round league.

It was very successful! We really preferred the home-brew pack and people stuck with the league through four months. Happy to admit that I was wrong! We also dropped the priority roll - a very popular decision. We’ve gone renegade!

I think Bounty Hunters plus the tempo of six month books turned the group away. We may not go back!

So after a few practice games and even a one day tournament my local really enjoys the new GHB!

New bounty hunter has brought a lot of players back into the game since they were just sick of it and also the local death/ cities players are happy now their support heros aren't getting sniped off turn 1 nearly as often.

I think it's a fantastic step and makes the named vs generic foot heros a interesting decision and the scenarios are pretty good.

I even managed to get first place with a stormkeep list focused on redeemers and holding objectives/recursion!

Don't need LoS any more to cast the realm spell, so an opponent can't stop it by simply placing a model on the center of the objective.

Fueled by Ghurish Rage is ... a ward save? so anything that denies ward saves denies your chance to use this 3+ to stay in the game...

The mission with table quarter objectives no longer counts as an objective for abilities or spells, which is a bummer as my Arkanaut Company liked hanging out in table quarters and getting +1 to hit.

A few misc other things but those felt the largest to me.
