Hey howdy hey I’ve a question.

So this morning I was gifted this touchingly sentimental paints and tools set with a couple of little 40k lovebirds on the front. Aw,

Now I’ve been doing my own thing paints-wise for the last 20 years so it’s been a long time since I bought a any citadel paints or tools, but this thing has all sorts different paints going on. Mostly base, one layer paint, one shade, and two technical…?

Now I understand base paints, that seems obvious enough. And there’s also three metallic base paints here (though Leadbelcher has a clear lid where Retributor armour and Runelord Brass are white. Is that significant at all?)

But then there’s this other metallic, Runefang Steel which isn’t a base paint but a layer???

The Shade paint, Agrax Earthshade looks like some kind of dark wash.

Then I’ve got two technical paints, Astrogranite (it’s grey, technical grey), looks like runny cement, I’m guessing it’s for bases.

And another technical,Tesseract glow, which looks like runny glow-in-the-dark necron snot.

There’s a set of bargain basement snips and a brush from kids magazine but then there’s this metal tab tool thingy. What even is that?

And what else should I know about how these paints are intended to be used?
The last citadel paint set I bought had a plug-a-bolter marine and a chaos warrior in it. No free plastic in this one? Disappointed.

Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs here theCrowe but figured id go over everything just in case. these aren't hard rules but in general.

Base Paint = Designed for better coverage, goes on 1st
Layer Paint = Allows some of the colour below to come through, use after a base paint or use 2+ thins coats to get the coverage you want
Shade Paint = A wash designed to pool more in the deeper areas adding that colour tint to the original colour, in this case Agrax Earthshade will had a darkish brown tint to things
Technical Paint = Designed for a specific function or purpose, for these 2
- Astrogranite - Designed for adding texture to your models’ bases
https://citadelcolour.com/videos/battlefield-mud/
- Tesseract glow - Apply over light colours for an eye-catching glowing appearance perfect for weapons, engines, warpstone or magic effects

They tend to suggest using them in certain combos but that's entirely up to you and what you want e.g.
