Finding it mildly irritating that I need certain monster parts to upgrade armour, but you don’t always get them them when you job that monster.

But…hey ho!

Next up, in the morning, I’m gonna go beat up Master Kohga.

Sounds like Monster Hunter.

That's a typical JRPG sort of thing, unfortunately.

Though having said that, the whole resource gathering doesn’t feel too much like a chore.

Also worth making friends with the Statue Things in the Depths. See, for 150 Poe souls (super easy to find) I can now buy doubles or replacements for Legendary Weapons. Like Big Goron’s Sword, which has a really good basic attack level and can still be fused.

I think today’s adventure shall be spelunking into an area of the Depths I’ve not previously explored. I’ve enjoyed the Collosieum fights so far, and I do like finding treasure!

Have you done the one directly beneath the overworld Coliseum by the Great Plateau? I did that one yesterday.

I think the biggest chore of resource gathering is the dragon parts (with that 10 minute timer), and some of the ores/gems you need. It's not bad if you focus on maxing out only one armor set as your standard set, and only get others up to level 2 for set bonuses. But if you want to max everything? That's about 600 amber required.

Fings wot I cannot fight.

1. Lynels

2. Gleeoks

I've only fought a frost Gleeok so far, that one wasn't too bad since I had found the unfreezable special helm. Tried a thunder Gleeok, and had to run away.

If you're really good with bow headshots, Lynels are stupidly easy. I am not good with bow headshots, so Lynels were not easy for me. What I did have was quite a lot of hearty food in my inventory for extra hearts.

Gloom Hands aren't as scary for me now (but oh boy were they originally at the top of my Run Away list). A triple shot bow with bomb arrows make them go away.

I haven't tried a frox yet. First time I saw one in the depths I just noped away from it.

I just don't farm anymore. Modern games have burned the love of loot out of me and to a degree, I kind of relish the challenge anyway.

On that note, I finished the game over the weekend and the finale is incredible. Some of the best fights in the series with my only gripe being the final phase is a little repetitive.

Still some quests I'll likely go back and finish. Done some world boss hunting and there's plenty to do, but even if I don't keep playing this is easily in contention for the top of the franchise.

King Gleeok. One of each bonce. It is not fun. Nor it inflicting Gloom damage at the same time.

However. Final battle now done. Absolutely great fun. Challenging, but not impossible or BS. Only struggled with one bit, and that was mostly because I wasn’t thinking properly and was being a silly. And it meant I got to chin my first Silver Lynel. Makes me more confident about hunting down the others.

Downside? There’s so much to do to get your feet under you in the game, it’s not one I can see myself playing it regularly. But. I spent £60 on it. And according to my Switch, I’ve clocked in 130+ hours of gameplay. So less than 50p per hour. That’s….cracking value, in my book. Spesh as I’ve still plenty to go and do on my current save. For instance, I’ve only improved one Sage. And there must still be some Shrines kicking about I’m yet to find.

A genuinely great game!

The farming in TOTK feels about right. Some odds and sods you need to work for, but not everything. I need to find two more Hinox guts to get the third level for my Soldier’s Armour set. Which right now is 18/18/12 and proof against a good range of stuff - only really letting me down against Gleeoks and other high level enemies. I’m guessing it’ll cap out at 24/24/24, which I’d be very surprised if anything can dent me.

Also also I’ve very nearly explored all of The Depths, which is fun!

It's definitely not a bad grind by any means. I've just gotten completely away from the concept and have adopted way more of a scrapper mindset when it comes to getting through games.

I might go back and max out some of my favorites, particularly if it means I can look better than my weird chains and Christmas lights set that was the easiest to upgrade, but I just had level 3 gear. The world bosses are definitely a good time. I've taken down the fire Gleeock and the giant frog underground. I did find the Gleeock king and armored Lynel underground, so maybe gearing up to take those things out should be my drive when I get back to it.

Mostly though I'm glad I hit a stopping point before Shatterpoint and SF6 launch on Friday.

Tantalisingly close to finding and plundering all the Shrines. Think I’ve got 6 hearts to go, so there’s 24 of them out there - maybe less if there’s a side mission I can bag a heart or two from.

152 Shrines total. I know of one side quest that gives a full heart container, but I think that's it just from the math I've done.

I’ve done one side mission which granted a Heart Container.

Google seems to show if you max out your Stamina, you can only get to 38 out of 40 Hearts. Leaving me 16 Shrines I think.

12 to go! Also, if that Lightning Dragon doesn’t show up on his path soon?

I’m gonna kick him square in the noots.

Somehow. Given he won’t be present.

But I’ll do it all the same!

Think there’s a mere 12 shrines to go now.

Also, yet to successfully chin a Greeok, or whatever they’re called.

But I will have their pills upon my Lance.

One day.

Found the Floating Colleseum. Surprised myself by decking three out four, only for the game to not register head shots against the fourth Lynel.

Ah well. Back t’surface. Load up my weapons but good, go back down and kick the snot out the lot of them.

Lawks. I did it! Pulled it off having used pretty much all my healing, many Sundelion Salads, and three Fairies.

But I pulled it off! And in return I got…….Majora’s Mask. Which is nice.

I must treat myself to a Pro Controller so I can do the N64 games. Also I’m now skilled enough to play “Hunt the Lynel and give them a kicking”. Spesh as I’m but one Hinox Guts from getting my Soldier’s armour up to 18/18/18, which of course will make life much easier.

Did some Hinox hunting last night but haven't had luck on the guts. I don't have any tails either and 2 pieces of the set left to upgrade, but getting there.

Got my Soldier Armour up to 18/18/18….but now need to slaughter a bunch of Lynel for their Guts.

Also took out a King Gleeok in the depths, taking barely a bit, so seem to have them down nicely.

All Light Roots triggered, and I think I’ve done all Colloseums.

Can’t believe how close I must now be to 100% completion. I mean, it’s probably no more than 70%ish, spesh I most certainly am not hunting down every sodding Korok.

I feel pretty done with the game to be honest, but no where near 100%. I just don't have that obsession anymore with near anything. I've got a couple goals that I work towards when I need a portable game, but nothing I feel like I have to accomplish at this point. Lynel hunting is on the radar, but I'm 18/12/12 and silver moblins don't do a lot of damage, so it certainly doesn't feel like a very necessary task, but definitely a solid goal.

I’m down to three shrines left, and just maxed out my Batteries.

Still plenty of costumes I’m yet to find, and I’m going to Guide-Scum those.

Now I’m well equipped and decently skilled I’m genuinely enjoying just romping around and smashing things in the face.

Funniest weapon I’ve used so for was a 20 Royal Broadsword with a Silvermane Lynel Blade, for a total of 75 damage. If I’d been quicker off the mark, I’d have taken out a King Greeok without it ever getting to its second battle stage.

Two shrines left to go.

And it’s doing my head in. Pretty sure I’ve got all 32 that are in the sky. But I’ve lit up every light root in the depths - so given those correspond to a Shrine on the surface, you’d think it would be process of elimination. But seemingly not.

Just did the floating Colosseum. But properly Loaded For Bear.

Much, much easier. Though I don’t know what happened to the Blue Maned Lynel. I had it pinned in a corner, giving it a good shoeing….and it teleported away. Possibly out of the arena entirely, as it didn’t come back and it triggered the next beastie.

But hey, first part of Soldier’s armour now Level 4, so with my Hylian robes I’ve gone from 60 armour, to 68.

Floating Colosseum is now basically a Lynel Guts Farm for me. Three more Guts and the next bit of Soldier’s armour is maxed, five more after that (and 10 Amber) and I’m about as well armoured as I think you can get.

Still not a clue where to find the last two Shrines. However, I can now max my Hearts comfortably, as I’m at a stage of the game where I know there’s not a lot of timing or charged attacks ahead. So I can go visit the Evil Statue at get me hearts up.

I definitely hit that point over the weekend where I got good enough at fighting Lynel I'm not entirely sure what I need the armor upgrades for.

In terms of top armor, fully upgraded Soldier's is near max. Its actually the same as the fully upgraded set you get for completing all the shrines, though that one has a bonus to the Master Sword beam attack. The "Of the Wild" set is also technically strictly better as it gives you a permanent attack boost and has the same armor value. I'm not sure I care to farm the dragons for that one though. Just feels like busy work.

On that note, the actual best armor value seems to be either the Soldier or Wild set with the Champion's Leathers swapped in. Again though, you're talking about more dragon farming than I have any desire for.

And down to One. Last. Shrine.

Most frustrating as I just cannot fathom where it is.

100% done the depths, having found one Light Root I’d missed this evening. Got the reward thing for it an all.

Maybe I need to tit about in the sky some. I swear I’ve got all 32 up there, but when I can’t find a Light Root without a corresponding Shrine located? As Yazz sang in the 80’s, The Only Way Is Up.

Accidentally stumbled upon the map to the Floating Colosseum last night. Cleared it but had to cheese the last one with Puffshrooms as I didn't have any gloom healing and I was down to too few hearts to survive a hit. Got me my second piece of maxed Soldier armor though, not entirely sure what I need it for though.

Made in gb
Ridin' on a Snotling Pump Wagon

That Colosseum becomes really useful later in the game. Not just to farm Lynel Guts, but because they drop really bloody useful and powerful other gubbins.

Hooves for your arrows, Horns for your melee weapons. Stick a Silver Lynel Tusk on a Gerudo Sword and it gets silly.

Taking a break from it for a while now though. But it is such a bloody good and compelling game!

In the latest of my bumbling unprepared into endgame encounters, I floated over to King Geelock the other night and managed to scrape out a win. Highly reminiscent of Dragon Lord Placiducax but still one of the best encounters in any Zelda. Turns out I needed that Soldier's armor upgrade after all.
