So, I'm planning on starting a 40k batrep channel at the launch of 10th, and while I know what I enjoy about them, I'd love to get a broader sense of the things that everyone enjoys about them. What's are the most important things to have dialed in right from the get go?

Just some ideas I've had watching various channels.

- Ensure your sound setup is good and your audience can clearly hear you. This is a bit of a personal one as I'm partially deaf, and I've soon lost interest in a number of channels because I simply can't understand them, or their editing is just awful and the cuts force their dialogue into one blob *cough*GMG*cough*

- You need a good on-screen persona. Don't be too serious and don't be too meme-y.

- A mix of competitive and casual play would be nice. My main channel is TT but I do wonder if it would kill them to use a bit more variety in their lists.

- Know what to keep in your videos, and what to cut. Can't remember which one, but one big channel has 2-3 hour videos of the game in real-time. We don't need to see every single dice roll and discussion.

Thanks for the advice.

I use them first to learn rules. (Like when I started 9th). Then once I learn the rules it's mostly just to check out cool terrain and models.

If you can build a cool narrative around it that's also good.

"Iz got a plan. We line up. Yell Waaagh, den krump them in the face. Den when we're done, we might yell Waagh one more time." Warboss Gutstompa

Mostly, I like seeing cool conversions/weird armies duke it out, preferably with some kind of memorable, narrative mission rules in place.

I'm looking for neat ideas I might want to steal for my own games and "good vibes" in general. If it's just two cookie cutter tournament lists going through the motions, my attention wanders.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Funny how meta armies get 0 vote but that's what you tend to see in youtube.

Supplv/demand not meeting or poll result rather atypical

I only watch batreps to see how the various factions operate in-game. I don't play pickup games, so studying batreps online gives valuable insight to the times our gaming group manages to get together for a game.

I prefer the realtime reps over the edited ones, as it is easier to follow along when you see every move played and every roll made. Not a fan of GW's own WH+ batreps, too much editing and unnecessary stuff, too much gushing, too much adjectives. Their boards look great but the minis are the boxart minis, kind of bland and impersonal.. I'd say my faves are probably GMG reps, they have a similar vibe than our own games (casual).

Not too fussed about production value, to me the priority is always in the game itself. I've been involved with TV production enough in my day job to not really feel impressed by most of the youtube stuff, but I suppose indistinct dialogue is a bit of a turnoff. If you want any pointers for creating decent audio, don't hesitate to PM me, good audio for video doesn't need fancy gear, just some sensible technique and basic understanding of micing & room acoustics
