This month, Mistakes Were Made: Many times people are in a bad situation, often due to their own poor choices. They made a bad call, signed up for the wrong job, read the map wrong and ended up at wrong battlefield. Really Very Regrettable Life Choices. Your entry should be in the wrong place, at the wrong time, or otherwise in over their head in trouble.

As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency ro model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well.

Holy crap, is that a record number of entries?! The list just seems to go on forever, and so much good work in there.

My absolute favourite off the month has to be Keezus; those guys are so cute!

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

My votes go to:

Daia T'Nara : This thing is so nsfw that slaanesh couldn't have come up with this on its own.

Mr Nobody : The eye for detail is great, I really love the way the chute cloth looks for instance but the diorama itself really drags in the top vote to this for me, I mean.. there's more people I voted for but this is definately the entry I think should win.

Youwashock : The color choice are beautiful, especially on the shield and sword, and the greyed out version is great at telling the story to this entry.

Midget Gems : Sorry bud, this entry is so freaking awesome but Nobody's diorama just was too good, I'm still giving your Torks a vote because holy heck is this an awesome bash (and paint, although personally would never have combined purple with green)

Had a ton of fun making the Boneshaper and peasant model for this entry.

I can’t believe the amount of awesome work that ended up being submitted and it is difficult to vote but in the end my votes went to the following:

YouWasShock, JoshinJapan and Keezus… I felt these entries were my personal favourites although MANY others came close.

Peace be with you all…

Excellent round of entries. I only cast one vote on this occasion, and that went to JoshinJapan. As always, excellent models, really nicely painted. Your understated but well executed entry definitely deserves more votes, especially for the rocket tube.

Alright, it's time I start participating and leave some comments.

Snowcloak - I appreciate the attempt at the blue glow. The white line with the blue drybrushing is a novel idea. It’s a little rough, but practice should make it better. Still looks good from a distance.
Daia T’Nara - It’s… a little much. But a chaos spawn is supposed to be a little too much. The various limbs from various species really sells the idea of aberration.
Geifer - A great job at displaying various textures with only paint. The stocking and skirt both look like different materials.
Leopold Helveine - Fantastic posing and a good use of bits. The idea is quite entertaining and really tells a story.
Olthannon - A solid paint scheme with a great, grimdark feeling to it all. Everything looks well worn with a thin layer of grime.
Jadenim - A great little objective marker and fits the theme. I just wish we could have seen the poor soul who found the bomb.
KidCthulhu - A hilarious sculpt and the fire is well painted. I always found flames to be tricky. I like to imagine this goblin started with a ‘brilliant’ idea.
Inmygravenimage - Is this the fish monster from The Host? I like the choice of colours. The pink flesh stands out nicely against the drab green. It really draws the eye. A great addition to a lovecraftion roleplaying session.
ZergSmasher - A beautiful model and perhaps a little daunting to tackle. I appreciate the attention given to the shield. Very well done.
Nevelon - I like camouflage. You don’t see enough space marines in camouflage. I’m not too worried for those marines, if COD has taught me anything it’s that long barreled rifles are great in close quarters!
Kakyrie - A brilliant idea and it’s an aesthetic that I can get behind. If perhaps a little rough. Keep up the experimenting.
Captain Brown - Nicely done. Your drybrushing is clean and well dispersed. It’s hard to find that perfect amount of ‘dry’.
Youwashock - A clever use of colour and I particularly like the weapons. Looks like copper and glass.
Keezus - Cute and colour. As kawai things should be. Good work on the eyes.
JoshinJapan - As always you have taken an older, and possibly outdated, sculpt and enhanced it with a supremely well accomplished paint scheme.
XvArcanevX - I like the colours. The blue and purple stand out nicely against the yellows in the bones and the sand.
Flinty - The camouflage is surprisingly subtle. The thin white lines add another layer of pattern as I take a closer look.
Mothsniper - I like the colour palette. All the warm hues are nice to look at against the green grass.
TheCrowe - A hilarious choice of model. It’s very entertaining to look at. We just a fellow ork with an arrow in their back.
Gulgog TufToof - I like the splashes of mud. It’s a good fit for the model. Although, the face could use more work.
Boringstuff - A good bit of kitbashing, with a nice base.
Pariah Press - The one on the left is well done. The one on the right is quite ugly, though.
Maharg - The pink is quite striking. Tyranid bits are always a good choice for random mutations.
Kurhanik - A circus of colours is a great choice for orks, but it could a few highlights and maybe some weathering.
Vejut - Are the bases handmade? An impressive display of patience to sculpt cobblestone.
MobileSuitRandom - Fantastic idea and I’m curious how modifying was needed to achieve that pose. Great detail on the quilted padding, I wish the new Votann kept that design.
Tyranid Horde - Great highlighting with a gloomy aesthetic. But the photo is a tad dark,
Midget Gems - More flying orks? I’ve heard there might be genestealer cults amongst the greenskins, but this is quite the sight.
DJJazzyJeff - Good highlighting on the skin. Big muscles are good practice for this sort of thing.
CancelledApocalypse - An interesting collection of astartes. I’m curious to know what their story is.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Super work everyone! I gave out too many votes this month, but my top three have to be:

JoshInJapan - I absolutely love your retro model choices and cool retro paintjobs. Love the shield design in particular - it's really reminiscent of the old Combat Cards.
Tyranid Horde - Looks like some super work, especially on the orc skin and the hanging threads. The photo is a bit dark and difficult to see, though.
keezus - A really cute mage, great work on her eyes, ears and the shadows on the hood.

Other picks are:

Kurhanik - Love the colour choices, really vibrant. What did you use for the main metallic?
Youwashock - Great choice of model and execution. I like the contrast between light levels, though could the lantern in beyond the wall have cast a bit of coloured light onto her?
Mr Nobody - Fun choice of diorama and I love the colour choices and highlighting on the 'nids.
Captain Brown - Really solid set of terrain pieces. I wish I had the time and skill to create such lovely pieces as that.
Maharg - The subtle shift in pinks between hard carapace and soft flesh/tentacle works really well.
theCrowe - That model... brilliant.

@Mr Nobody: If you want to read the story I'm writing for these characters and the rest of the circle, let me know. I'm intending to start publishing it on here at some point - assuming there's interest in it, of course.

Thanks MrNobody. I tried out a bit of thin cross hatching this time around to lighten the grey back up toward white, but while keeping a bit of texture going on. I think I mostly worked.

Well it's never a bad thing having a god owe you a favour

 Mr Nobody wrote:

No need to be gentle, it's a lot much - I debated with myself whether she was pushing the whole Slaanesh NSFW thing too far, and the fact that she's a spawn and therefore inherently over the top was the deciding factor in 'yeah go ahead and do it anyway'. Which I'd love to say was a one-off, but I've got this idea... alright I'll just be honest and admit I have no filter when it comes to Slaanesh.

Snowcloak: That's a really cool use of the panel lines on the Falcon/Prism hull - I like the bone and bronze colour scheme for the weapons and engines too, they make a great contrast agains the hulls.
Daia T’Nara: Okay now you've got it out of your system can we get back to normal miniatures- no don't glue a dong to a Venomcrawler what's wrong with you?.
Geifer: I love the looks you've got on the fabrics, the puffy white shirt and the waistcoat over it particularly.
Leopold Helveine: Very dynamic, really conveys the disaster-in-progress feel of the scene.
Olthannon: Great work on getting so much contrast into the gold armour, and the skeleton/standard is a richly detailed centrepiece.
Jadenim: Love the combination of rugged tech looks and gothic detail.
KidCthulhu: Nice contrast between the vibrant flame and the depth of the green skin.
Mr Nobody: The Ork's muted skin and outfit make a great conrast against the colourful bugs, and the whole scene is really well staged.
Inmygravenimage: So much impressive detail here I barely know where to begin, although the fleshy pink mouth really jumps out (I'm sure the poor guy staring into it feels the same).
ZergSmasher: That mini really caught my eye as soon as it was revealed, and you gave it a great paintjob, especially the face.
Nevelon: Very convincing camouflage on the marines, and the various colours and finished on the nid come together really well.
Kalkyrie: That's a very different and striking colour scheme for marines, feels like something out of Rogue Trader where there were so many ideas flying around you never knew what you'd see next.
Captain Brown: Such a good set of terrain, so many textures, I love it - particularly the speckled look of the roof on the big flattop building with the hatch in it, it looks great close up and at a distance.
Youwashock: Great companion pieces, the sparse use of colour on the second one is inspired.
Keezus: So cute! Lovely rich paintwork on the cloak.
JoshinJapan: They look great, the various metal finishes in particular are super convincing.
XvArcanevX: Lovely mix of colours, I particularly like the vibrant blue against the bronze in the armour.
Flinty: I like the little areas of vibrant colour, the missile tips and viewports and so on, against the frosty armour patterns.
Mothsniper: Very characterful pair, the red hammer's really striking.
TheCrowe: Oh I love that, adorable mini, and you've done him justice with the paint.
Gulgog TufToof: Great grimy, utilitarian look on his outfit.
Boringstuff: Really impressed by the metal, especially the 'loincloth' armour.
Pariah Press: Lovely colourful trio, the grin on Dirk's face is a particular highlight.
Maharg: Great paintwork, the nid pieces blend in flawlessly.
Kurhanik: Wonderully Orky.
Vejut: That little goblin's so adorable.
MobileSuitRandom: Really striking work on the old nid and that poor little squat.
Tyranid Horde: Very rich highlighting, I love how it looks in the shadow.
Midget Gems: Well there's something you don't see every day - wonderful conversions.
DJJazzyJeff: That guy looks proper tough, great work on the textures of his armour and hide.
CancelledApocalypse: They look great, particularly the Iron Warrior's armour, I can practically hear the clang he'd make if something hit him.

Thanks, the shield is possibly my favorite part of the actual sculpt with the possible exception of the cloak. Glad you like it!

Daia T'Nara wrote:ZergSmasher: That mini really caught my eye as soon as it was revealed, and you gave it a great paintjob, especially the face.

Thank you very much! My jaw was on the floor when I was watching the live reveal of this model, and it was an absolute pleasure to paint.

Well, looks like I'm an also-ran yet again, even when I pull out all the stops and my paintbrush is just about on fire. I think part of my problem is I do the right mini in the wrong month; in some other months Lion would have hit the podium for sure, but the quality of the entries this month is such that he just didn't get noticed as much, and that says a lot about how awesome everyone's painting is.

Lovely work, everyone. It's great to see so many interesting takes on the theme! I'll try to find some time in the next few days to do some proper comments, but in the meantime:

Mr Nobody wrote:Alright, it's time I start participating and leave some comments.
JoshinJapan - As always you have taken an older, and possibly outdated, sculpt and enhanced it with a supremely well accomplished paint scheme.

As much as I love these Oldhammer models, I have to agree with you, at least on this set: the sculpting is pretty rough. I'm happy with some parts of the models, quite unhappy with others. I can see a lot of mistakes (see what I did there?)

CancelledApocalypse wrote:JoshInJapan - I absolutely love your retro model choices and cool retro paintjobs. Love the shield design in particular - it's really reminiscent of the old Combat Cards.

Thanks so much. These old models have a lot of funk value, that's for sure. It's gratifying that you like the shields-- I'm terrible at these sort of freehand designs.

Daia T'Nara wrote:JoshinJapan: They look great, the various metal finishes in particular are super convincing.

Thanks! I like to think that I'm getting better at NMM. I find myself staring at shiny metal objects, not because I'm secretly a magpie, but because I'm trying to figure out the lighting.

Its great to see so many entries

Thank you very much for the comments and votes Leopold Helveine, Mr Nobody, Daia T'Nara

Snowcloak- well done for getting some big entries finished. A very interesting effect.
Daia T'Nara - thats some well painting but weird stuff going on there Daia.
Geifer - I like the tone change and shadowing on the skirt and purse, good painting.
Leopold Helveine - great imagination for this entry. a fun entry.
Olthannon - When i click the pic to make it bigger you can see your efforts much more clearly, is that a prismatic sword? very cool.
Jadenim - only 7 seconds left to rethink those mistakes, nice.
KidCthulhu - a crazy seemingly on fire goblin, I like it.
Mr Nobody- great choice of models and a very well thought out scene
inmygravenimage - the Morgraur is a really interesting model and you have painted it very well, a nice combo so different sizes for the overall entry.
ZergSmasher- great work Zerg, you managed to get him done which is a awesome achievement
Nevelon - good combon nev, i've been seeming a lot more of nids recently, the cults must be preparing for something....
Kalkyrie - very blod colours, almost has a neon effect.
Captain Brown - a lot of painting gone into that outpost, it looks great.
youwashock - awesume combo of the 2 models there, very well done.
keezus - great painting, the eyes particularly are effective.
JoshInJapan- Really nicely painted dwarfs, the bronze metal has come out really well.
XvArcanevX - Very scenic entry and cool effect
Flinty - cool mechs, the ice blue and hazard strips is a nice effect on the base
Mothsniper - nice pair of models and they look like they are having an argument
theCrowe - Hehe great choice of model, really like this one for the theme.
Gulgog TufToof - nice and muddy the way a cultist should be
Boringstuff - very well painted, I especially like the shine on the back of the legs.
Pariah Press- very interesting models and definitely a mistake to pedal your wares in a combat zone been nids and SMs
Maharg - nice pink guys, and rather insane looking
kurhanik - Very nice and vivid colours, the metal parts maybe needs some more varied elements (rust, dirt, grim etc)
Vejut - fun and characterful models
MobileSuitRandom - Lovely choice of models, wow that tyranid after all these years.
Tyranid Horde - Good painting and attention to the details
Midget Gems - I'm quite happy with how these turned out overall.
DJJazzyJeff - Well painted and I enjoyed reading your reasoning behind entering him
CancelledApocalypse - A very cool comb of models each with their own chapter defining characteristics, very well done

Make no mistake, that was an amazing month full of great entries. And it’s time for some winners.

Tied for 3rd with 21 votes each are...

Mr Nobody with his Downed Ork Pilot and friends. All orcs love a good fight, but I think he’d prefer to still be flying for this one!

Meanwhile, Captain Brown's Empty Imperial Outpost is quiet. too quiet. What happened here? Where are the brave defenders?

In second (with 23 votes) is Tabbybrook Mage from keezus. Who is entirely too cute to go dungeon delving. Who knows what lurks in the dark places of the world? This can only end badly...

READY FOR ADVENTURE!!!

Speaking of which, our first place winner with 25 votes by youwashock – Before and Beyond The Wall gives us a great example. I don’t know what this poor adventurer did getting past the wall, but I know she’s regretting a lot of her life choices right now. From fresh and ready to take on the world, to hiding in the dark. So many mistakes...

That wraps up our 99th competition. Thanks for painting along. Great work on the podium, and all the way down the line. Congrats to everyone!
