After years of dead air, something stirs:

everybody gets refunds (if you had preordered for some reason, and didn't already divest yourself of this utter disaster), and for the physical version, you get a refund even if you don't want one.
also, 6 screenshots. (there's a bartender, and a tree. And a lot of dark empty space.)

also, also, they'll actually make a real announcement in September. And maybe actually come clean about who is making it now.

And yet, this somehow manages to be only the second-most embarassing PC gaming news in June

Which was the most? I hadn't caught anything particularly embarrassing (but my awareness of the 'scene' is sometimes spotty).

The KOTOR2 re-release just announced that they would not actually include the fanmade 'Sith Lord Restored Content Mod' as free DLC, which was offered to them for free, and was repeatedly hailed both as one of the best mods of all time (including by the producers of the actual game) and as the only thing that would make purchasing that rerelease worthwile at all. KOTOR2 was a sad excuse for a RPG in places, as great amounts of content were cut from the release version, leaving gaping holes in the story, entire storylines missing, and generally leaving the last act of the games in shambles. Since the assets etc. were only cut, but not actually removed, fans were able to restore much of it by investing thousands of man-hours, leading to a much better, more complete game. They offered it to the publisher when news of the remake arose, the publisher accepted and marketed it aggressively, only to cancel it at the last minute. People that pre-ordered are extremely pissed.

Huh. Had to really dig for that.

Apparently its for the Switch (the game has been on Steam for years now). And honestly, given the legal nightmare that including modded content officially opens up, it seems wise to me.

The only PC 'remake' is for Kotor1, and that's been put on hiatus.

Though the Old Republic MMO is now being retired as well. (not killed, but farmed off to legacy servers run by Broadsword)

Wow.

It's weird how this game came out of nowhere only to be quietly shuffled away within a few months, and now it's just come back out of nowhere.

Will it be shuffled away again?

I feel like the story of its development is gonna be way more entertaining than any game can be XD

Maybe. The tabletop edition that Paradox put out ended up with a backstory that wasn't interesting so much as simply ugly.
So did the hiatus for this, really, but both were loaded with accusations and politics of various nasty sorts. People were fired or left (particularly a few from VtM1) and their chosen replacements deeply offended the rabid parts of the fanbase for existing. Unpleasant all around, really.

Paradox had consistently claimed it was still in development with someone they didn't disclose (partly because of how ugly it did get with Hardsuit Labs), but they buttoned up tight on the subject. Their official forums for the game are still sealed tight (for new posts, they still have a lot of what went down), even with this announcement of an announcement, and have been ever since February of 2021. It was supposedly about six to eight months from release when everything was nailed down.

An update and trailer dropped a bit ago:

Our silence on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is over
Today at PAX West, we announced that Bloodlines 2 will release Fall 2024 and The Chinese Room (TCR) is the studio bringing this sequel to life.

In Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 both long-standing fans and the newly-embraced will play the central role in deciding Seattle’s future in an action-RPG set amid a three-front siege on the City.

The old meets the new in a struggle for Seattle; will the most ruthless win, or is the third actor playing for an entirely different prize? For the first time in a Vampire: The Masquerade video game, players will take on the role of an elder vampire.

What are the bets this will suffer from the same end Duke Nukem Forever and other similar development hell games have?

Depends on why the original mess occurred. There have been rumors, and some of them suggest that the cause was Paradox being dissatisfied with the original development team's vision for the game. If that's the case, and that particular problem has been resolved to Paradox's satisfaction, then it'd be more or less like any other game development.

I'll note that since the announced release date is only a year and a half away, I suspect that Paradox feels confident in the current work on the game (regardless of the real cause of the original problems).

It's also possible they're willing to just shrug and say 'put it out, we'll make what we can.' There's been a fair bit of that the last few years where it's pretty obvious the publisher was just done and told the developer to ship (Anthem had that case imo to give an example, the most recent Battlefield as another).

The developer has changed, though (from Hardsuit Labs to The Chinese Room), so Paradox must have decided that some changes were in order. In particular, it's worth noting that Paradox owns a minority stake in Hardsuit Labs (33% of shares). So throwing them out for The Chinese Room - which afaik is not otherwise linked to Paradox - is significant.

Huh. The nature of the game really shifted with the change in developers. The original concept was a 'Thin Blood' vampire and all that entails. Jumping to the player as an Elder is... pretty wild.

especially with the way that game mechanics and power progression usually goes. 50 Stupid Bucks on some sort of terrible 'Hollywood Amnesia' plot.

Gotta laugh that there was a preview to this preview which is just a preview of the reveals starting next year. Dig that hole.

If anyone wants a brief overview of the new developer:

Mod guys turned horror games (Amnesia). Co founder and creative director left about 2 months ago, so... yeah. That would have been about mid re-development of Bloodlines 2 Good re-beginning.

Hey what you said is total Bull Crap....most games are like 70 to 80 USD now. That's my only change ;P.

Wow this game sounds like it'll end really bad. Development Hell usually does end badly though. Not to mention we are in the Dark Age of Video Games or at least triple A studios. I heard Larian Studios (baldur's gate 3) is the only exception right now and there's no certainty they won't get big, sell out and then rush production on some big budget, graphically impressive, buggy and shallow mess like so many other companies before them.

Well at least we have the Endless Series. *Humankind comes out*

Well at least we have CD Projekt Red. *cyberpunk 2077 comes out*

Well at least we have Fat Shark. *Dark Tide comes out*

Rinse, repeat.

There's a reason why i fear for the next Xcom game. I heard midnight suns was decent enough but you never know these days.

Eh. It got some pre-release gushing, but pretty much fell flat. (and despite being a 'critical success,' which I'm not sure is true after the honeymoon period, it apparently cost more than it brought in. In movie terms, a flop).

This one has a lot of warning signs on it, but what little they've shown off is a new game with a new concept. So.. we'll see. I'm put off by the 'action-RPG' tag, as that has implications for gameplay, but genre terms are so fuzzy now that it might mean nothing.

Not a lot impresses me with the gameplay that they've shown above.

Show me some conversation options, sneaking around, how missions can be done multiple ways like the first game did. Looks like a mindless/lifeless VR "shooter" at the moment.

Was initially pumped for this game when it was first coming out and getting developer/lore/gameplay updates but it just doesn't move me right now. Would be nice to be surprised with a quality game, but I fear its DOA. If it even arrives.

That's fair. My expectations are low, and Paradox hasn't exactly impressed me with their management of any property lately.

Age of Wonders 4 was pretty good, but the first DLC was very thin on content, and their tweaks are just fiddling with numbers rather than real gameplay adjustments. They've driven pretty much all their grand strategy games into the ground at this point (at least from my perspective)

More news on this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj_93zPUIa4

(there's an article/interview somewhere, but I haven't looked)

Set, voiced protagonist, appearance customization not certain (male/female is the only thing for sure), only 4 clans to choose from at launch, but more via DLC (which... red flag right there) From the art reel (and powers from the game play),

I'd guess the clan options are Brujah, Tremere, Toreador or Venture and maybe Gangrel (there are two street thug-ish looks for the female body). Blood magic was shown off in the gameplay video.

You play an elder vampire named 'phyre' who has, of course, been power sapped (for game mechanic reasons, though it negates the point of making the playable character an elder), and for no apparent reason has a thin-blood's voice in their head (a la cyberpunk)
