Hello guys !
Just a little post to show you the new magnetic transport system I've been working on for my upcoming Kickstarter campaign !
I've always felt a little something was lacking to make magnetic transport just perfect, especially when it comes to vehicles, and tried to fill the gap with 3D printing.
The whole project uses 6x2 mm magnets and a little hot glue/electrician's tape for optional padding if you're worried about scratches.
I plan to offer commercial licenses and have a few print shop interested so even if you do not own a 3D printer you may still get these !
I'm launching in the coming weeks but I'm still interested in any feedback and suggestions !
We have a healthy number of supported vehicles and will add support for more if we meet out pledge goals Backers will get to decide which vehicles are added first !

If you're interested you can subscribe to my newlestter on the website at https://go-magnetic.com/ or check out the Kickstarter page below :[/color]

Stuff figure storage.
That picture of the Heldrake has written its own "Inquisitor wants to discover a Heldrake's secrets" scenario.
By the way, that cyan text is not working on Dakka's safe for work page format. It's there but not good to read on a white background.

Thanks for the info I didn't know about that I've reverted it to default
Yeah I like the "chained beast" vibes a lot, goes well with the Defiler too and pretty much the only way to transport these models besides the cardboard box of shame

I don't even own an FDM printer, but I can see a lot of potential in this! Fliers and tanks and such that don't have a base to magnetize are certainly one of the weak points with magnetic tray approaches. Even if you glue a flier to its base that's often having a lot of model wobbling on a very small contact point (putting loads of strain/pressure on it).
Your idea of printing small brackets is simple and yet a very elegant solution!
Paint rubbing is one concern I'd be considering, perhaps look and see if you can find a common fabric material that's easily bought anywhere which could have its size taken into account for backets. So a user could print the "bare bones" version that you've got on show; or an "added padding" version that has a bit more room with the intent that they'd add the specified type of padding so that there's little to no risk of paint chipping/scraping/rubbing.

Hey Overread !
Flyers are definitely in my line of sight, I've been using the same anchors nets as the Heldrake pictured above to transport my Aeldari flyer but there is still room for improvement and if the campaign gains some traction I may very well end up designing custom supports for all vehicle models in the future !
I've been experimenting a little with padding. It hasn't been a problem so far and most of the supports for my own army aren't padded at all but I'm not taking any chances with other people's minis so I'm definitely taking this into account and the STL bundle comes with a short pdf guide to give little tips like this one.
A small layer of hot glue worked great as well, and I think silicone putty would perform even better

Glad to see you're thinking along similar lines.
Another thought with fliers, as I stare at the harpy on my desk, is the idea of a cradle to hold the underside. I see your helldrake held down by mostly what looks like two criss cross cords across the the top of it. However I think an ideal solution would be to have plastic underneath it cradling its shape so that it can sit flush with the cradle and then have the straps over the top.
Of course that would require you to have files/models of most of the air units in the range so that you could design cradles that will perfectly fit the models.
Fliers and skimmers would certainly be a big focus if I were you. They are the ones people won't have the option to easily mount. Even things like land raiders are not too bad as you can hide magnets under the base of the tracks and soforth; a flier has no such spots if its not glued to its flight stand.

That's a good point !
I've used a 3D scanner to get accurate models from real miniatures I own or have borrowed from friends.
I wouldn't trust something that was completely modeled on CAD. Proportions can be surprisingly tricky to get right even when you have a caliper to measure everything.
As for flyers, organic shapes are significantly more labor intensive though so that's a time investment I've elected not to make until I could have a better assessment of demand for particular models.
Flyer aren't super popular at the moment in 10th and it's further complicated by the fact that some people permanently glue their stands so I'd have to design supports for both standless and glued stand minis
I think stuff like Devilfish/Trukks will be a popular demand at first but eventually that will all be up to a poll submitted to backers for me to make a priority list !
What model would you guys like to see supported first ?

Pledged! Your system really looks interesting especially for vehicles. I'm trying to move away from foam for my miniatures because magnetic allows a better density.

Thanks for your support dude ! Funded in 4 hours and going strong for those stretch goals !
Yeah honestly it's not even close
You should see some screenshots I've seen as well, people breaking every single backpack standard on their grey knights because of the square cut foam cases or the spikes getting tangled in it. There seems to be no truly perfect solution to miniatures storage, I guess that's just a normal effect of having innately fragile creative pieces being constantly transported and hand-held
Models being all lined up and removable in units rather than one by one make it much better as well though, as does the fact that with magnets you can optimize space between the stages of your case so you never waste any

Question... do any of the trays work for Battletech hex bases?

Thank you friend ! Well that's a good question, I don't own any but they might if the angle of the edge is similar to those of GW standard bases

For reference, here's a comparison with a GW 32mm base:
And here's a link with an stl with the same dimensions as the base, if you want to do a test:

That looks quite close to me
Is that a printed base ?
If that's the case and you have the file I can definitely check it out in my CAD program and I'll tell you if it seems compatible
It depends however if 32mm is the diameter of the hex between the points of the distance between the flat edges ?
In any case I'm waiting to see if the demand is there but I may definitely end up adding models for other game systems in the future !

Both are official bases, but I have printed some of the ones I linked and they're exactly the same dimensions.
Also, yeah, more options for other systems (MCP, SW Legion and Shatterpoint, for example) would be welcome

Okay so I gave it a quick test and it looks like it may just work
I did have to scale the file you sent by about 5% in diameter because it was 30mm between edges when I imported it. On the right of the pic is the original size compared to a GW base
So assuming that the official bases for battletech are indeed 32mm it should work, the angle looks good as well in the tray

Well, I'll surely give it a test, thanks!
EDIT: Gave the official bases a quick measurement: 30mm on the flat sides, 35mm on the vertices. Also, when I said 32mm I was talking about the GW base: IIRC, the official Catalyst measurement is they use 1.25'' hexes

Hey, looks great for the regular vehicles but as someone who printed something similar (just basic tinker cad design) for flying stands (Eldar jet bikes in particular), you WILL want to make something that locks the stem and not just the stand base.
I have 10+ shroud runners/shining spears that have snapped 2/3 of the way up the stem (near the thinnest part) in transit in the car (I think going around interstate/highway onramps is what really does it, could also be braking/accelerating over and over and over that eventually causes them to fail). The top 2cm seems to be the most common break point but I've also had one break where the stem inserts into the base (womp).
I was tinkering with the idea of some kind of hook/rod setup to brace the stands but never got around to finishing it.
Thought you would want to know from someone who has now printed 10+ flight stand magnet attachments to rectify.
