For those of us who remember BattleMasters fondly, and deeply regret getting rid of that tower..

Restoration Games has announced they are bringing the game back (kinda their thing) but instead of fantasy battles, it will be Kaiju based..

https://www.instagram.com/restorationgames/reel/DDPuqxtyTRv/?hl=en

BattleMonsters is what they are calling it

Battle Monsters is a restoration of the 1992 classic Battle Masters, officially licensed and featuring the fan-favorite Titans of the Monsterverse. The upcoming Kickstarter campaign offers two core sets, each including two huge, detailed Titan figures and a supporting troop faction. You can play each pair of Titan and faction against any other. Want to pit Godzilla and Monarch against Mechagodzilla and the scheming Apex Cybernetics? You can!

As with all our games, Battle Monsters features fantastic, modern gameplay, enhanced by top-notch production quality and table presence. We're excited to share more with you during the campaign, including some little (or not so little) surprises.

Will be a kickstarter down the road.. they did a good one for Crossbows and Catapults over the summer this year

Monster Apoc showed there was certainly interest in Kaiju battling games and with that game now snarled up in the death of the KS firm for the most part it will leave a huge gap wide open

What a totally random pairing. I'm certainly interested in this, but I'll be curious to see how much Battle Masters really comes through. I guess you'd have a big map with big hexes to fit kaiju units and platoon units and could keep the card deck activation system? It's not like the number of models on the unit bases mattered in the original or anything.

So they aren't really bringing BattleMasters back at all then?

Its just a retheme of the mechanics it seems, makes sense as they cpuldnt attach the whfb IP to it as thats owned by GW whereas theBattleMasters brand is hasbro or milton bradley or whatever

Infinite pass from the company then. Fireball Island was very good, but almost every other game either requires Google Play or iTunes(Dark Tower, Stop Thief) or is completely butchered(Key to the Kingdom)

I'm a big fan of Battlemasters from back when it came out, and I even still have my complete set (a bit well worn!) including the map. They have done an absolutely amazing job with Thunder Road. I own almost the entire game, even the most recent Kickstarter for the Carnival of Chaos). But I can also see how it's impossible to use the Warhammer material in a "new" non-GW game.

But I'm going to have to see Kaiju to believe it. I don't know why they couldn't just have a non-IP fantasy battle game.

Still intrigued, but I would have liked to have a fantasy game to bring back the nostalgic memories of the first wargame I ever owned, and the first miniatures I ever painted.

Because then they can't try and tap the Godzilla collector's community.

Which is funny because I've yet to see any talk about it in the Godzilla collector's communities I'm in.

This is not BattleMasters.

I am still hopeful that Hasbro/Avalon Hill uses the Heroquest models to re-create BattleMasters as a Heroquest tie-in game.

It makes sense that they couldn't do it, but it doesn't make sense to them retheme it. I don't think anyone is crying out for a a retheme of Battlemasters because the system was just so damn good and it played so well. The appeal is in the nostalgia - indeed, most Restoration Games products have updated the game mechanics a fair bit to improve the appeal to a modern audience, while keeping the old theme, artwork and gimmicks. But if you remove the theme and then also update the mechanics... it's basically a new game.

I guess it's a bit like Dark Tower where in that the main thing was bringing back the gimmick of the tower, but for Battlemasters the gimmick is a huge map with massive units? Have to admit that sitting on the floor to play is a lot less appealing than it used to be as well.

They did claim it would have "table presence"

So that assumes it'll fit on a table. I reckon that's good?

I play...

Sigh.

Table presence is industry jargon that means the game is attractive and draws attention when its being played. Tbat usually means it has large game pieces or a dramatic game board, etc

Loved Battlemasters. The Chaos figs of a couple sets are the core of my Chaos fantasy army.

Might have been interested in an HQ-like redo that removed GW IP.

Zero interest in this.

Always wanted a decent kaiju game.

Monsterpocalypse didn't exactly pan out the way that I'd have hoped, so I managed to get into Godzilla: Tokyo Clash, which is really cool once you add in fan made stuff.

Let's say that I'm going to keep my eye on this; it would be cool if it was Toho stuff instead of, or as well as the Legendary Pictures stuff, but there are a lot of talented kaiju fans out there and fan made content would be sweet.

They're saying it is but who knows? My lack of interest is related to the Kaiju theme.

BoardgameGeek has the entries for the 2 starter sets up

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/434430/battle-monsters-godzilla-vs-king-ghidorah

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/434546/battle-monsters-kong-vs-mechagodzilla

Just a little bit more about the gameplay

Set in the exciting world of the Monsterverse franchise from Legendary Entertainment. The game offers two core sets
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and Kong vs. Mechagodzilla. Each of the Titans is supported by a unique faction: Monarch, Apex Cybernetics, a horde of superspecies, and a team of skilled mercenaries led by Col. Alan Jonah. The Titans from either set can face off against one another.

There are a couple of decent Kaiju miniatures games out there, by indie companies. I know Ganesha Games has a pair of companion rulesets called Samurai Robots Battle Royale and Mighty Monsters. I have thought before about getting them to use the Godzillaverse vinyl figures that my son collects.

I wonder how they scale with AT... still disappointed I can't find appropriately scaled Jaegers for AT.

Surprising they can't just give the models a generic fantasy spin like HeroQuest.
