Honestly I feel like splitting into the 3 categories was a good move this year, but I think they need to split 40K into 2. One for Imperial model of the year and one for Xeno model of the year because honestly when ALL the slots are taken by Imperial models I think its just showing a buying bias. Cause surely there have been some good Xeno models released this last year that are worth showing off and taking that title.
Other ranges are showing really well - a little surprise that the must debated Undead Dragon took 1st place but shows that it really did stand out as a model. Also really pleased to see Malstrain Genestealer taking a slot!

Three of the five top 40k models are Chaos Marines. Where's the Imperial bias?
What notable Xenos got released this year? The only thing that immediately comes to mind is Vespids and Kroot? Neither of which I expect to have much of a chance even in a contest purely reserved for Xenos.
Nehekhara lives! Sort of!
Why is the rum always gone?

I think you mean 1 of the top 5 were Chaos - the rest are all Imperial models.
You do raise a good point - I did just go for a wander through the Xeno ranges and yeah it was a bit of a slower year - probably because we've a few - like the new Warp Spiders that got previewed but aren't released yet. Plus tyranids hit hard last year with their mammoth release.
Chaos won every year but the last one IIRC (when Dark Angels won... go figure ), as it should be.
While Imperials usually have pretty boring miniatures, the Halflings this year were cool.
I would have voted for 30K Mechanicum or Rohan, if I didn't miss the vote...

I think you fell for the Dark Angels joke.
I voted for Inquisitor Ostromandeus, Krethusa and Hermiatus. Well, at least Krethusa is in the Top 10.

All in all it was a pretty uninterresting year, Anything could have won. I remember voting for striking scorpions just because I could not find anything better to put the vote on, not because they were particulary great.
Ushoran is best model of the year in my oppinion. I have no love for the new halflings, and cant belive the mini diorama got so many votes.

Dang it! Darn tricksy chaos imperial sorts!
Don't worry! I promise that's the last Dark Angels joke I make this year!
Well, the dragon is pretty cool. It's the howdah that sucks. I could see people voting for the part of the model they like, even if the whole of it isn't much to write home about.
I would have voted for it if I had still remembered what happened as far back as January.
Nehekhara lives! Sort of!

Also lets not forget a LOT of models can photograph "ok" but can be really different when you see/build/paint them.
I know there's a few models over the years that I've not liked as much when they were photographed, or thought they looked good; and then really liked them when I've seen them for real.
Plenty of people in the live thread where he was unveiled thought Ushoran was one of the best GW models for years. I suspect it walked it. I certainly voted for it.
To be fair FEC are still very much in establishing their design language. They are one army I fully expect to see evolve quite a lot with new models and updates over the years.

Really?
I expect GW to give them a few token characters over the years and perhaps a new unit in 3 or 4 years. Or do you think the new wolf gits are indication that AoS suddenly start to revisit old factions?

Well at some point I expect GW to update the Zombiedragon kit and that could be an interesting update. Right now its shared between Dragon and Terrorgast and between Soulblight and FEC. An update there could go any one of a number of ways since Soulblight and FEC have rather distinct styles. So we could see them separate into separate kits or have optional parts with a wide divergence of style.
But yes as the army grows and evolves I'd expect it to gain more unique designs and appearances. Not quickly, there's a lot of AoS armies in worse shape and loads of spaces in many others to add more models to their range.
Yeah, the Zoombie dragon need to be replaced because its a unit from the old game.
My point was that armies dont grow over time in AoS.
Sylvaneth got new flying units a couple of years ago, and orruks got a giant boar monster. Thats the full extent of GWs effort to ad something new to an existing faction. The other rare releases for existing factions is just to replace units still around from fantasy battle.

I don't agree, armies do grow; its just AoS started with a bonkers amount of old models and fragmented armies (and a degree of lack of direction/focus). Barring stormcast who mostly have a broken level of growth because they keep putting them in the starter box every 3years; most other armies are fighting for growth spots with other forces needing them too.
So you've a bunch of armies like Skaven with large model counts and diversity and then armies like Daughters of Khaine, with very small model counts in terms of kits. I fully expect to see second-waves of new models added steadily over the years to various armies. The single model releases are more GWs way to keep attention on an army without a big update so it doesn't fall into the "GW Are abandoning this army" attitude that can develop.
Why people voted for that abomination of a bone dragon is beyond me. And how only the malstrain got selected for Munda' over two generic marines is mind boggling.

Fair enough. To be honest, when it comes to AoS I regard you as one of the most credible people around to comment on the game or the lore.
On the Surface of the Sun aka Florida in the Summer.

Both those Horus Heresy Meh-rines... Who would vote for them?

I don't play or particularly like AOS' over the top designs, but i loved Ushoran. An amazing sculpt. I thought the new extended background for him and the FEC are some of the best in the whole game. Really strong release across the board!
My favorite model of the year is Lady Elise though. I absolutely don't understand how that dragon ended up in front of it.
