Subject: Obscure Movies: What unknown films have you recently watched?
My free movie subscription has allowed me to watch several movies I either missed in theater, or just wasn't interested in paying large amounts to see. FYI, Borderlands wasn't nearly as hideous as I thought it would be. I also get the chance to see films I've never even heard of
I just watched School's Out For Ever. It's a British film from 2021 that tries to cross 28 days later with Lord of the Flies. 15 year-old boy is alone after a pandemic kills everyone that doesn't have O-negative blood. He has to return to his former boarding school and survive the apocalypse. My biggest gripe: the makers seem to forget exactly how many people have O-negative blood, it's about 7% of the population. Yet it seems like survivors are few and far between. It's just barely good enough to keep you from changing the channel.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man came out in 2024, and I think I'm the only one who has seen this low budget train wreck.
I just watched the trailer to it. Man.... That makes the reboot/prequel from 2019 look good.
I'm anxiously awaiting The Crow (2024) to air, so I can see how disgusted I am with it. While the original was pretty good, I think it was over-hyped and isn't quite as great as people believe.

Even if you thought the original was just ok this remake will still probably make you angry at how they massacred it. There is a five minute fight scene near the end that is incredibly brutal and well done but the rest is awful, and not in a good way. It is the kind of stupid that doesn't get a cult following it just gets forgotten.

Abigail was a fun horror comedy. If you can watch it cold, without seeing the trailers, do it.
Sisu is an over-the-top hyper violent John Wick-a-like about a Finnish soldier killing the hell out of Nazis.
Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. Almost the exact opposite of Sisu. It’s charming, funny and heartwarming. If you like Stidio Ghibli films, you’d probably like it.
RRR. I don’t know if this Telugu film is really obscure anymore, but if you haven’t seen it, see it! Two legendary Indian freedom fighters kill the hell out of Brits. Then they sing and dance and it’s amazing.
Labyrinth of Cinema. I think this just barely makes it into the recent time frame. It’s the last film by House/Hausu director Obayashi, which incorporates everything he had left to say on life, cinema, history and war. It’s beyond borderline experimental, but if you can stick with it past the first 10 minutes you’re in for a moving, singular experience.
Hundreds of Beavers. It’s hilarious and weird and surprisingly well done. It’s not for everyone, but the trailer should give you an idea if you’ll be able to make it past the first ten minutes or not.
Have you perhaps heard of a little known animation fever dream known as... Redline?
Now it's mildly famous as the last major anime project to be done entirely in hand-drawn animation and for almost bankrupting Madhouse because it was so expensive to produce.
But holy gak is this movie insane. Both in terms of its animation, plot, music, characters. It's a wild movie and probably deserves more recognition than it gets.

Stars Demi Moore and Dennis Quaid.
I'm not sure a film that has already won multiple awards, is up for multiple Academy Awards including Best Picture, and has been a darling of both critics and audiences qualifies as obscure. It isn't a blockbuster but is far from unknown or unseen.

I tried to watch it and I'm not an anime hater, but I couldn't get into it. Might have to try again tonight.
It looks gorgeous. I found out about it initially via a synthwave AMV.

I caught a glimpse of this on Pluto TV and was like...... WTF is this.
Look forward to watching the whole thing.
As for Redline it is an interesting and beautiful to look at spectacle of a movie. It has those weird, quirky tone shifts that make Anime so inscrutable to Western audiences. However, there is no doubt it looks great, and the main character is absolutely ROCKING that pompadour.
