Is this the sequel to the fan made project? Or was there an 'official' Astartes 1?

It's by the guy who did the first one. It's a mix of things, since you see his custom chapter at certain points, plus the projects he had on his patreon before getting hired by GW, and then a lot of new stuff too

Yeah I got that it was the same guy, just was checking if this was the first Astartes released under GW's banner. Take it the original is no longer available?

Not sure what I enjoyed the most out of that little teaser, the ork beatdown, the predators fanging it along the highway shooting at nids or the fact that he's still working in Proper Space Marines and hasn't been forced to switch over to Primaris.

Whatever he's got in store for us, bring it on!

The first wasn't officially released by GW, but they hired him after and he had to remove his original versions from youtube. Then it was re-released on Warhammer + without the copyrighted sounds and music (and possibly released on youtube as well)

Wow. This is the sort of thing I wanted from Warhammer TV.

Love a lot of little details in there, appreciate seeing a Predator and not a floaty thing. Also really enjoyed the "The Emperor Forgets" graffiti - things like that breath life into the setting.

The magnitude of excitement I felt while watching the teaser is indescribable.
For the first 15 seconds I was afraid, it’s just a scam clickbait video, so I had to pause and check, if this is real.

God damn, we are so back!

We will finally yet again get something truly cinematic and artistic for our favourite hobby, makes me warm and fuzzy inside.
Astartes II and Space King is all I need.

Also super excited. Unfortunately we’re still a year out.

Worth signing up for a month to absorb all of that series.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Oh look, turns out the Astartes guy actually has been working on things and wasn't thrown in a dungeon like the Internet would have people believe.
Almost like animation projects take a long time or something, especially when working on other projects within the business.

Looks very good, as expected.

Re bolded; so, what people might hyperbolically refer to as "being chained in the company dungeon slaving away on slop" etc? People were excited at the idea of the chap being hired by GW because the (charitable)assumption was that GW were hiring him so they could reap the rewards of giving him loads of resources so he could make Astartes 2 quicker than when he was one bloke working in his spare time, it's hardly unreasonable for people to be disappointed that instead it seems GW either put him to work on advertising materials for most of the period between hiring and now, or else didn't actually give him much additional support beyond whatever renumeration(and legal protection) his contract promises.

That said it does look excellent, I just hope they let him keep doing proper Marines and their "present" hinted at by presenting the teaser as their past isn't Primarification.

My thoughts exactly, then I read the fine print on the WarCom article.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/8ovvyar9/astartes-ii-teaser-trailer-watch-it-right-now

This teaser trailer is not actually clips from the new animation, instead showing a compilation of shots that represent the former lives of the characters that will appear in the show. There’s a pretty unsubtle hint at the end as to the nature of the final story... We’ll leave you to speculate and start putting the pieces together yourselves.

You might notice a lot of the footage is from the original trailer Syama Pedersen made years ago before GW bought him out. It seems like maybe the other scenes we hadn't seen before contains stuff he made at the time or before GW bought him out and which he didn't put in that trailer.

So GW has baited us with ultra cool "first born" action but I wonder if they'll Primaris them in the actual series. It seems clear from that quote and the "Suffer not the alien to live" quote at the end and Terminator with an Inq logo that these guys are going to be Death Watch. Are they going to be Primaris Death Watch? Maybe they'll split the difference and be a Terminator squad.

None the less, it seems like the tradition Space Marine designs are not necessarily safe bets in the final series based on the trailer.

Columbus, Oh

Spiky marines too!

I kinda was wondering what he might envision for the Death Guard.. that would be interesting to animate

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

We have no idea what the scope of the original project versus what it is now.

He might have had access to considerable further resources and help, have really done little more than a few days consulting on some of the other projects, and Astartes 2 might have grown in scope from a ten minute short to a forty minute one.

Yeah, this is almost certainly a Deathwatch thing. The intro crawl definitely hints to that, and the Deathwatch Terminator at the end is a strong sign. If they are Deathwatch, I imagine it'll be in a similar vein to the Cassius kill team.

As for people raising a fuss about if it'll be firstborn or Primaris, is there really that much of a difference? They're all Space Marines.

Fantastic teaser.......That feels misleading and let down by the whole description.

There's so much cool stuff shown in the trailer, all those different chapters, locations, scenarios, enemies. Really showing the variety of 40k there and it all looks just great.

But that's not what it is, no. Those aren't actually from the animation. They're just teasers for the characters with an unrelated few seconds showing some hints of their past, because it seems it's a Deathwatch story.

I'm sure the final animation will be just as awesome as the original, but doing that is a big disappointment. Showing all this cool stuff, and then going "Oh, this isn't part of it".

So.. it is in fact according to the article.. Primaris [likely] Deathwatch remembering their former Patreon only teaser clips as Firstborn?
Used to sucked us in for several months or a year of Disney.. I mean Warhammer +.

As a patreon back then, the clip with Orks and Tyranids attacking an Astartes were shared, that's about it.
We now see expanded upon Predator and Astartes from different chapters.

There is no way GW won't make them Primaris..

Scythes of the Emperor cape twirling and predator tanks racing down a highway, oh lord....

There is just a depth and gravitas that makes his animation just feel right.

Using the first born and then have the primaris fleets turn up and they transition would make for a simple and excellent episode.

No idea though if this is varying length short episodes like he originally did.
1 longer episode.
Or a full blown series.

It is INSANE how wrong they got Space Marine movement and combat in Space Marine II when this guy is just sat their as a GW employee/contractor with all these amazing assets.

I believe he was involved in the Secret Level 40k episode and that shows.

That shot of the Scythes vets with their capes billowing in the wind is pure badass, in both subject and technical execution.

I wonder what the purpose of including a - possibly Death Guard - Chaos Space Marine was, give the clear Deathwatch theme.

Part of what makes Astartes work is the excellent on screen interpretation of the MKVII armour, something most animations and games struggle with. We have yet to see if Pedersen can work his magic on the MKX armour.

It's like having the teaser trailer feature Chris Hemsworth and then Liam Hemsworth shows up the final film. I mean, they're basically the same right? And Liam Hemsworth is younger and slightly taller guys! (Actually the Witcher kind of did that already) Liam Hemsworth just doesn't have the same screen charisma and Primaris don't have the same presence as first born, particularly as Pedersen envisioned them.

At any rate it was always a pipe dream that the original vision would come true only because at minimum GW would insist he work with a huge team using different animation pipelines. There was a purity to Astartes being done by one person. It's hard to reach conclusions from the Secret Level episode, even though Pedersen worked on it in some capacity (Whether it was his input or them just cribbing, the copying inspiration from Astartes is obvious) since that was Blur studios and this likely won't be and likely nowhere near their level.

I don't know about that. The Secret Level primaris marines are possibly the best depiction of how Astartes, especially Ultramarines, should move I've ever seen. Not a single wasted movement by any of them.

Hard disagree. In comparison to Astartes, secret level marines move like they are being filmed for a music clip - the scene where titus blows up the tank and reloads afterwords - is a bit cringe. Astartes bois on the other hand are too cool to pose for explosion shots, and them looking badass comes off natural.
Overall the way Secret Level is animated is very good, it’s just a bit weaker. Pedersons directions are palpable, but the “group projetness” or maybe Amazon in the background shows itself a little - on the decision level, rather than the technical one.

If you pause the teaser when the 2 Predators are speeding down the highway the lead predator has the seam lines from the kit where the autocannon and turret halves join - that's amazing attention to detail....

If you ever want to scrub your love of first-born Marines from your soul, just go back and watch Ultramarines (2010).

That should fix that.

In all honesty, I think the final product will be awesome, and the best we've seen... until we can get them to go back and work on some Horus Heresy action.
