I know that Scythes of the Emperor but damn if they are not a Minotaurs chapter. Looks really good with all bits attached

Yeah I wanted to emulate old lore where they used to have a Greco Thracian vibe, but it's true that the hoplites style poster boys are the Minotaurs ahaha !
Thank you hopefully the paint will sell the chapter better than the bits !

Hi all small painting update on the tyranic war vet sergeant, yeah everything is acceptable to keep me away from starting to paint Thorcyra and progress on the diorama !

Hope you'll like him anyway

Mr Sarpedon

Having read through your work so far I gotta say I am seriously impressed. Back when I was a young Neophyte I had the 2nd edition Tyranid Codex and loved it- that was my first experience of the Scythes. There was some scenario fluff for Epic 40K against the Nids with them too but I wasn't aware of other fluff about them. Did you ever see this chap's awesome stuff around the Scythes? www.the-scythes.com

I love your modelling and painting style - the characters and troopers so far have been very impressive. The writing fluff I also like, this is some solid hobbying right here!

Land Raider Reclamator blew my mind!!

I'm not down with the Primaris nonsense around the Scythes either- I did like the little cameo they got in the Astartes II trailer tho.

Thanks for bringing these guys back to life for me and reminding me of good times

P.S. The Hive Mind Librarian absolutely rocks too!! I love Mark Gibbon but never saw that sketch- BRILLIANT miniature result from you

oh gak mate you have absolutely no idea how much your comment mean to me !
Ragsta, what a legend, I still fondly remember your brazen guard all those years ago ! Hell I even commented on them at the start of your pm blog on page two with my account from back then "Faust" !
Ahah it has a come around that such a legend enjoy my work ! I feel truly blessed right now and ecstatic!

Really glad that my humble work bring back happy memories for you !

I did follow Sebastian's work since all those years ago and the scythes were always in the back of my mind and his website was always a source of inspiration as well as information!
And yeah, it seems that this 20 second clip did more for the scythes than 20 odd niche years ahaha but all the better for us !

Thanks again for all those kind words, truly. To be entirely honest, I saw your comment earlier today and rather than reply right away I spent the last 4 hours finishing that veteran and write a little tidbit as well ahah there you go mate ( and all of you that keep clicking on this blog ) :

Tyranic war veterans, we all are.. we few that remain, that were reclaimed or managed to survive.
Once again our primogenitors give us hypocritical pompous titles while robbing us of our legacy.. how long did Cassius keep sgt. Remas for his own plan and machinations? What is supposed to be our elite purpose captain ? To act as the first company? Any of my living battle brother is already a veteran, all of them are as deserving as me for that crest and white helmet..and there aren't many neophyte to impress either .
So once again I ask you captain, what is our purpose now ?

-Menestios Scylax, tyranic war veteran sgt.

He's 95% done, I'll probably had some more details on the banner and some touch ups here and there but nothing too different, as for the bases, I'll work on them once the squad is done !

Wow, that looks damn good. Red white nid looks very organic with marine, and that freehand on shield and pauldrons looks cool. My inner critic wanna say something but it's just whole and complete. Idk if there something needed on banner or elsewhere.
Great work

Thank you for the kind words and continued interest mate !
Yeah I love how it clashes against and yet blend along nicely, kinda fitting since it's supposed to be hive fleet kraken that ravaged their homeworld and virtually wiped out the chapter !

Please, feel free at anytime to point at anything and criticise anything as well, I've marvelled at countless awesome work on dakka and elsewhere as well and I know where I stand on the hobby so I'm all for advices, critics and feedback so don't ever worry about hurting my feelings ahaha !

For the banner I merely wanted to add some yellow linings on the side or maybe a chapter symbol TBF as for the touch ups may be work a bit more on the lens and the helmet but hey, details !

Thanks again for the comments, the interactions keep me motivated!

Hi all !

Finally started to work on Thorcyra!
The last sergeant took way longer than anticipated so I figured I should probably stay on course for once and keep working on the diorama.
I'm gonna take my time on this one since I went through the trouble of upscaling him I order to be able to add him to my force eventually, so again c&c are more than welcome !

Started from the bottom .. not very orthodox I know but I wanted to be able to assemble him as soon as possible without having to struggle painting the back of the legs because of the cloak.. ironically I was very proud of the edge highlights on the back of the legs but you'll have to take my words for it since they're no longer visible
So yeah, legs are mostly done for now and the upper torso got a sloppy base coat.
I'll have to add some bulk on the hips area. I was a little bit optimistic with the toga on one side and added armour on the other.. may be I'll add another layer of plates and cloth once everything is done.. again not very orthodox but hey, what can you do ?

Hope you'll like the WIP shots !

See ya'

Lower half up to waist is really fine, additional armour, toga tubes and ropes look nice and organic except for a bit over highlighted part of toga, they stealing attention from other parts of miniature.may be add some touches of pale but light red with drybrush or stippling? Just to mute bright red a bit.

As for head It's a bit strange like he swinging his hammer? Axe? Mindlessly and happy I mean posture is like he swinging his weapon on someone at his left and a meter away, but because head is up it's give that strange vide

as always it's IMHO

Hi !
Thank you so much for your input, you are totally right on that red part and thank you for offering solutions ahah, it avoids me the trouble of washing it again and highlighting again !

Oooh yeah I can see that now, the poor lad finally snapped and gonna stab his own guard now ahaha !
While I find it incredibly funny now that you mentioned it, it's mostly due to the angle of the picture for the placement of the head, and a sloppy dark gray base coat on the air and bear, leaving what appear as an almost tootlhess grin !
I can't unsee it now

Thanks again for the valuable opinion!

Leave him grin. It's gives him lots of character. A little insane but happy.
As for washes I don't use them, may be because I don't know how to use them properly but it's always mess after them.

It was my pleasure to comment, mate. Oh wow, a fan!? Haha! You know, I’m actually rebuilding a First Born force and reevaluating a Brazen Guard paintscheme…

100% you were part of the OG for me, truly a pillar of Dakka. Proof you're still around doing even more impressive and inspiring work !
Man that would be such a blast to see at least one now ! They were already amazing and I never got around how to reproduce that colour! Can't wait !

I wasn't ready for such a close up even though I own the model ahaha ! Had a good chuckle, I will definitely try to keep it once painted but I can't promise anything

I went back on the tabard as you suggested to tone down the highlight and it's indeed much better, once again thank you very much for your attention to details !
Well unfortunately I can't really give solid advice either as I have completely accepted the mess as part of my process and then I work from that stage to clean up the bigger mess and keep it a little messy while convincing myself that this is grimdark weathering style !

And so small update on Thorcyra, as I said, I take my time and try different things and then go back because I'm not satisfied and then force myself to stop before ruining the model under 376 coats of paint !
But it's starting to look like something I might be proud of once done.

Hope you'll like him !

Ps: this is still a WIP

That's nice, he's whole now, and attention go straight to his head due to bright gem on his forehead. I'll keep most of criticism for a moment you're complete him

Joke aside, looks good for my taste yellow is good, and I'm like how gold is darkened.

I expect you to be merciless once completed but I'll have to keep you you waiting for a while longer I'm afraid.
I thank you once more for the kind encouraging words !
I'm spending a lot of time on him and not really satisfied so far, but then again there's still much to do as well !

Here are some updates for now !

Well glad you like him then !

I did some touch ups here and there but yeah not sure what more can be done.. I feel like I'm drowning in the model so unless you guys spot something than need to be addressed he's gonna collect some custom dustâ„¢ while I work on the scenic base and Tyranids..

But since I'm just terrible at finishing anything that I started here's a possible start for a proxy lieutenant or may be adding him to the Tyranic war veterans after the proper plate adding process.. ?
What do you guys think ?

Just in case magnetized the weapon arms and probably will the other one as well !

So...
Except that he doesn't grinning anymore, it's looks complete, you obviously can add something to him, but why? do basing and seal him with varnish.

Leut looks too Carcharodon now, but it's cool.

Sorry about that, I'm usually at least decent with faces but i guess my basic sculpting skills with green stuff left me not much room to pull that out !

Will focus on the scenic base from now on !

Sergeant Remas was the leader of the Scythes of the Emperor Space Marine squad which tried to apprehend the first Hive Ship which approached Sotha, prior to the planet's destruction by Hive Fleet Kraken.

After inserting by Boarding Torpedo, they ventured into the ship but were attacked by Tyranid creatures. Most of his squad was killed (including a warrior named Brother Harvan) and eventually only Remas and one other, Brother Tobias, escaped after crippling the ship.

Remas and Tobias drifted on their own ship until it was recovered by the Ultramarines. By that time, Sotha had fallen to the xenos invasion and was already a dead world.[1] When he was discovered, the unconscious Remas was gripping tightly on to a tattered Chapter banner, which depicted the golden horseman symbol of the Scythes of the Emperor.

After he had recovered sufficiently, his rescuers took Remas to meet with Chaplain Cassius. The sergeant was dressed in a black tunic decorated in gold, rather than his power armour or other battle gear. His testimony that day helped Cassius in the organisation of the Tyrannic War Veterans.

Remas was relatively short for Space Marine, but solidly built. He wore three service studs in his brow, each inscribed with a small image of a horseman. He had the shadow of a deep, ragged scar across his left cheek, most likely a result of injuries sustained on the Hive Ship.

When meeting with Cassius, he carried a look of profound sadness in his eyes, and walked with a pronounced limp.

Remas supposed to be the sole survivor of his chapter. It is known about other bands of Space Marines wearing the Scythes of the Emperor’s black and yellow colours throwing themselves on suicide missions against tyranid high-value targets, but as yet this reports went unconfirmed.

That's the bit of old lore that founded the Tyranic war veteran for chaplain Cassius of the ultramarines

My take is that, convinced that his chapter was annihilated he took the apocryphon oath and joined the deathwatch for a while but stumbled upon a salvation squad during a raid on a Tyranid hive fleet and returned to his remaining brothers .
Now out of the chain of command and without a squad to lead but with tremendous exp against Tyranids albeit a different one than his surviving brothers , he acts as a "lieutenant" .
While respected for his prowess against the hated foe he is often considered as an outcast by his brothers that survived Sotha and Miral. Wrongfully accusing him of being the puppet of Cassius and the Ultramarines and betraying their origins.

Still feeling guilty over the loss of his squad and his de facto non commitment to the defense of his homeworld Remas hold no grudges against his brothers and is more than happy to hunt any bio form that would make a fine addition to his grisly collection of trophies.

Man, I love your style! It's like Gwar on acid goes to the opera, gets bored, hits a drag show ...and commemorates the night in a 1960's style rock poster.

Keep it up!

Added a proper cloak , some studs and tubings on damaged greave, a big fat purity seal on the chest piece, some work on the banner proper as well, and memento mori with feathers and skulls of former squad brothers Harvan and Tobias,

The ragged banner is intentional as it's the one he was clutching on when found derelict by the Ultramarine.

Very solid build, with cloak should looks really great. Spines on backpack exhaust looks barbarically but very character

Thank you!

Yeah it's an old chaos backpacks with the skull vents replaced by tyranid heads, the huge spine protruding hi hidden behind the black chitinous plate and was wondering about keeping the spine or not,

On one hand it add a nice end on the other it is inconsistent since Tyranids have exo skeleton and therefore no spine per se..

God dayum but there's some character in this army. Brave as balls to do scythes just for the black yellow colourscheme alone!

Good detail on the sculpting too. You've turned the scythes into something really tangible! Kudos to you!

Thanks a bunch ! That means a lot, especially coming from you, your work is incredible!
substance is what I try to keep from their old lore back when they were obscure but had a flair to them! Glad you like them and thanks again for the message!

Hi all!

Small update on Remas as I started painting, I also did prime the rest of my Tyranic war veterans so I have a few minis to keep me busy with !

I tried to experiment a bit on Remas' plate to add some texture to the ceramite but I'm not completely sold on the results.. hope I didn't butcher it.

It's still WIP so hopefully I'll be able to salvage it with the rest of the model ?

Any thoughts and tips appreciated!
Here goes
