This is a bit of a leader joins a unit question.

Lilith joins a unit of 10 wyches, Lilith special rule Brides of Death: While this model is leading a unit, models in that unit have the Fights First Ability, and each time a model in that unit makes a melee attack, add 1 to the strength characteristic of that attack and improve the armor penetration of that attack by 1.

So It looks like since when a leader joins a unit, they become a model in that unit, and as such Lilith herself also benefits from the increased S and AP of her own rule. But only when joined to a unit. Once all the Wyches are dead, she is no longer leading a unit and as such doesn't get the benefits of her Brides of Death special ability for the rest of the battle.

The same thing as I read the ability of the Lord Exultant of the Emperors Children, While leading a unit he gives models in the unit devastating hits which should also confer to his weapons as well as he is a model in the unit. However if he is by himself he is no longer leading a unit and no longer benifits from his perfectionist rule. Unless its possible that they become a leader of a unit of 1.

Correct.
It’s a known piece of dumbness to the 10th Edition rules.

Clocks for the clockmaker! Cogs for the cog throne!

This is a know oddity in the 10th Edition ruleset. It seems to be targeting at preventing the Smash Captain phenomena where a characters ability makes them better on their own than weighed down by a unit.

The best way to look at it is a synergistic effect that requires the leader to be leading a team for it to work. Doesn't aways work (why doesn't the Psycher do as much psychic stuff when not leading a unit?), but is the best you can get to head-cannon the rule.

Head cannon wise it works for Lilith. She works just that much harder when trying to maintain her perfect image when the other wyches are around, and the other wyches feed off her energy, thus the bonuses.

But yeah, suddenly some character becoming less accurate/deadly when by their lonesome is a little hard to wrap the head around. - such as the devastating hits.
