I suck at Total War. I seem to get overwhelmed in every battle unless it's clearly in my favour, and even then I typically take horrendous casualties. I struggle to assimilate all the information on screen and get my units doing what I want fast enough not to get surrounded. Even things like grouping units and using pause to issue orders seems to be of little help. I had the same problem with the very first TW games, Shogun and Medieval, 20+ years ago, and pretty much gave up on them.

I enjoy the strategic campaign parts of the games but I find the actual battles to be a demoralising chore.

I was wondering if there was a turn based Warhammer Fantasy Battle game similar in scope to TW. I've found with CRPGs I get on much better with turn based than real-time with pause, so I'd be looking for something similar.

Yes its called Warhammer The Old World - a tabletop miniature based game. You buy the models, build them, paint them and put them on the table yourself.

Roll dice and have fun!

Which basically says that no there isn't a turnbased fantasy game on pc. The closest would be Gladius but that's for 40K not AoS/Old World.
The only other turnbased games are ones like Shadows of the Horned Rat which are REALLY old games (you can get them on GOG).

Oh, I do, as often as I am able. I have about 3k points of each of Empire, WoC and Skaven, and a burning desire to collect a bunch of other armies. I manage to play roughly one event every couple of months. Computer games scratch a different itch though, and don't require me to go places and talk to people.

I guess there's the possibility of playing Old World on Warhall or TTS, but I prefer to do my tabletop gaming in person and my computer gaming alone.

I actually have Shadows of the Horned Rat from a Humble Bundle it turns out. I should give that a go.
