Hi all, I'm new to 40k, and I figured it would be a good idea to work on some lists before I go out and buy models I’m never going to use. I’m looking to build a shooty space marine army that is a take on all comers list. I love the models, and there's something cool about knights in space that I can't quite put my finger on. I’m still working on the fluff, but I like the idea of a new chapter w/o too many warm bodies to throw into assault.

If I could get some feedback on 1) how bloated the lists are and 2) how forgiving each list is to newbie mistakes, that would be great. Also, if you had to choose, which list would you pick?

The Hammer

A few little points: (I can't be bothered to write a whole list at the moment)

Your big choice is whether you want to go heavy on vehicles, or infantry. Either way, you will have some of each, but you need to decide what the main target you present your opponent will be.

You're making a similar mistake to the one I made when I first started my marines. Predators are used with Razorback-heavy lists, Whirlwinds are sometimes used for infantry-heavy lists. Neither of them should get any vehicle upgrades - except maybe Rough Terrain mod/extra armour in cluttered/Cities of Death boards - as both are for shooting support.

Tank Hunters is not such a good buy for guys with bolt guns. It is handy for Devastators, however - Honour Your Wargear > Suffer Not the Work of Heretics. It is also sometimes a useful skill for Terminators due to their assault cannons - fun when you get S13 from a rend.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.
